The microswitch closest to the opto is not working. in test mode it doesn't show a ball there. I pull out a new microswitch with roller, put the DMM on the new switch, works fine, I put the DMM on the old switch to confirm and it works fine? on the DMM continuity, but still doesn't register on switch test. the opto switches read fine the switches behind it read fine, but what would cause the switch to give continuity on the multimeter, but not read in the system?

Well that sucked. I started at the switch and worked backwards. the white with yellow was the offender, so followed it down, unclipping the zip ties to make sure I had the right w/y it went ill the way down, across the back to the left side then as I was moving back up the left side, I came to an end. wire was cut and stripped, but in a weird place. well took a few minutes of looking and questioning myself when I finally realized what it was. the other switches all had two wires going to them, but there was one with just one. soldered it on, and viola! continuity. too bad I didn't/couldn't see the desoldered wire on the other side of the machine, so that only took several hours to track down.
