My Williams Tri-Zone has pulsing feature lamps. Basically all the MPU controlled lamps pulse on and off in unison. It looks pretty cool actually, but all of the other Tri-Zones I have ever seen have their lamps remain on like on any other Williams game of that era. This includes all the videos I've watched of Tri-Zone as well. What is going on here? Is this something programed in the ROM I have or is this some weird hardware thing? Any insight would be great.

In my limited experience, it's the big capacitor in the head. It either needs to be replaced or there's a bad connection. Obviously check the connection first. I had this happen on my Laser Cue and one of the wires had broken off. I resoldered it back on, and all is good. No more pulsing.

Yep, this is what was the problem on my game where the controlled (feature) lamps were pulsing.

Unfortunately, Ed at GPE is out of the 27k uF big caps:

You might want to contact him and ask about availability.

Also might try Todd at Big Daddy:

I wouldn't pay $33-$55 for one from Marco. That's ridiculous.

Yeah, I was sort of expecting that. Since it's called a smoothing cap. I will check the connections. I have a spare head I can steal one out of to try.

Thanks

It was indeed the filter cap. The big "beer can" one in the head. For anyone who comes across this in the future.
