If I can recall, it is supposed to have a motor attached to it somewhere...

Nope, I just got out and moonwalked across...
As for the thread-
It looks like there are some mini-LED's/sensors on the face. Rocking it back and forth lights the symbol to complete a mode maybe???
If so, time to "pan" for some Autobots! 
Another idea...
Maybe Ironhide is the ball-lock on the LE? After all the balls are locked, he lifts up the back edge to dump them all out at once! That would be cool.
