They also play "Bang on the Drum all day", "The Chicken Dance" and "YMCA" are you suggesting those would also make good pinball themes?

Just saying people do like GNR they just can't admit it!

    #102 3 years ago

The first video game I bought for myself as a kid was Toy Story for Super Nintendo. I loved the movies. Now I'm older and my girls love the movies. If Toy Story is released, I'm in for an LE or CE for sure.

Nothing against GnR, but I have no interest in that.

    #103 3 years ago

I just don’t feel pinball is a family game to me, I have logged over 90% of the plays on my pinball machines, I could give a fuck less what my family wants, they will play whatever I give them and I will play it the most. I am sure if you were to give your family the option of how to spend $10,000 none of them would choose Pinball.

I said this before and I’ll say it again - toy story is a bad license.

Bad Timing - Once again they are a day late and a dollar short (or years late). Missed the boat on the recent movie coming out and this is an ancient franchise in today’s market and by the time the pin is announced (much less released) the enthusiasm for anything Toy Story will have died down. Just like Hobbit.

Your kids and grandkids have no attention span - Those looking to provide this game as a family bonding experience for their kids or grandkids are doomed. Kids have ZERO attention span and after 5 minutes would rather go back to the video game of the week than to repeatedly play the same pin. Your kids and grandkids will not care and not be thankful and not be impressed any more than if you bought them a $60 PS4 game.

Toy Story hasn’t aged well - Toy Story movies, particularly the first and even the second have aged about as well as the “money for nothing” video by Dire Straits. Very poor video quality will not make for good background like Hobbit. It feels extremely dated. Using clips from all the movies will appear jarring and disjointed given the visual disparity over the years.

There isn’t any nostalgia - yes it’s a great heartfelt series but it as zero nostalgia for any era or any particular product line or soundtrack or ANYTHING that drives the feeling of nostalgia the way franchises like TMNT, BTTF, Star Wars, etc do. It is generic in every sense which drives no nostalgic connection to anyone or anything.

The sentiment is lost on the pinball audience - what is the theme or actual message of a Toy Story pin? A warm-hearted tear jerker / comedy cartoon does not provide any sort of narrative that remotely aligns with or easily translates to a pinball machine. Creating a pin around this license requires dumbing it down to non-story based charater / identity driven modes and themes. No one playing pinball is looking for that “awweee, so cute!!” Moment or that “wow this means so much I’m going to go home and reflect on my life and relationships” type moment...both are what the movies are about. Great for film, pointless for pinball.

The demographic is all wrong - the audience that has any tie to this franchise is traditionally not in the age group for most pinball buyers unless you are one of the older crowd who wants to buy this for your kids or grandkids and we have already touched on that topic above. This theme has no place in a “barcade” The themes that resonate are obvious...familiar bands, comic franchises, 80s throwback themes, nostalgia driven themes, etc....of which Toy Story fits none.

I only bring this up because I am concerned for JJP. I want them to succeed and pray to god the GNR rumors are true, it would be their first chance to really hit the mark. Toy Story is just another miss of a theme I fear.

I like GnR... I owned a GnR tshirt back in 1988 and I wore it to school every week while i was in 8th grade.

My wife and I agree on any decision over $1000. Although we usually talk about anything over about $100.

My wife probably plays our games more than I do.

    #106 3 years ago

I think one thing that has everyone twisted-up is that a Toy Story game would have to follow the movie(s). I'd be shocked if they try to ran something parallel to the movies. Instead I think I think they would try to do something like "Toy Story Mania" or the "Toy Story 3" game for the PS3. Neither of those had close tie-ins with the movies, but were based on ideas from the movies.

I dunno...toy story rides/adventures at Disney resorts have little to do directly with the movies and are very enjoyable. Basically it’s an entirely new mini story/adventure with the toy story characters.

Hell, you could make an entire mode on Party-Saurus-Rex (which is a little short video) and it could be a blast.

The poll taken above might disagree with what you’ve stated, about TS being a bad license. A great deal more interest in TS than GNR according to the poll.

Just saying people do like GNR they just can't admit it!

Lots of people have admitted it already with their pocket books. GNR has been a hugely grossing tour over the last few years. Plenty of people like GNR. I keep hearing Rush rumors for a possible Stern pin. No way are there more Rush fans than GNR fans.

    #111 3 years ago
    Quoted from Krupps4:

. I keep hearing Rush rumors for a possible Stern pin..

Do you? Or do you just hear people on pinside say they want one? Because for some reason its really hard for people to understand things like that are not rumors. Remember Jaws from last week?
    Or 2 years ago?
    Or 6 years ago?

Pinside but my point is that the majority of the people seem excited about Rush but on this thread people seem less than excited about GNR. I’m just surprised Rush seems to carry more weight than GNR. That’s all.

    #113 3 years ago

Gotcha. It's a music pin, so whether people chime in or not it should sell well.
More than anything the JJP and GNR I think it's hard to picture for people...Toy Story seems too easy to do. I don't know wtf you do with the art other than skulls and not have it look horrible. Of course thats what I thought aboot Metallica and it turned out great. Maiden was even easier with Eddie...Aerosmith was a steaming piece of trash.
    Gonna be interesting.

This. There is no reason it has to follow/ mirror the movies. The characters / toys are the draw not the story.

I love music pins and GNR is my dream pin. Pinball and some great rock music just flow together so perfectly. Keeps me wanting to play that one more game over and over before calling it a night.

I absolutely have no interest in a Toy Story pin. Too kiddish IMO.

IMO, if TS is too kiddish a theme, because it’s about toys, then all pinball (which is one of the biggest most expensive toys made), maybe too kiddish as well. Lol

This may stray off topic a bit, but those who feel Pixar movies in general are “kiddie movies” haven’t taken a hard look at them.

The first 15 minutes of “Up!” could be difficult for some adults to watch that wouldn’t register with kids at all.

“The Good Dinosaur” has several dark scenes in it. I’ve always felt this movie strayed away from Pixar’s usual style.

The city dump sequence in “Toy Story 3” is very dramatic and intense, especially if you’ve followed the franchise and become attached to the characters.

“Inside Out” has some very deep and abstract depictions about how our minds deal with memory loss, abstract thought, long term memory, etc that no kid would be able to follow.

I’ve unapologetically watched all of these movies, and I’m almost 50. They are obviously geared largely to younger kids but always have some content for their parents to enjoy as well.

Now back to your regularly scheduled pinball bitching.

Respectfully disagree. As someone who grew up in the late 60’s/70’s, there is a great deal of nostalgia in the Toy Story movies. These were the toys kids played with long before the Internet and video games (i.e. Army Men, Slinky, Barbie, Cowboys, Spacemen, Plastic Dinosaurs, Mr. Potato Head, etc., etc.,).

I agree... many Pixar movies (including Toy Story) deal with more adult themes than “Rick and Morty” .... they just don’t have any swearing so they get rated PG and not R.

It is for sure the crowd I hang with, men

Men with certifiably awful taste in music, who are very likely to have a skullet sticking out from under a dirty baseball cap. Who are probably married to women who still wear acid washed jeans and have giant, bleached blonde hair... and are the source of snickering and jokes wherever they go.

    Those are some bold assumptions

    Quoted from Krupps4:

So, if you didn’t have kids, would you still buy Toy Story?

Have you considered that Toy Story has been a part of many "Adults" lives? It's just that simple. I'm almost 50 and still watch cartoons. I hope they don't build TS or that it sucks because otherwise I'll be forced to buy one and it won't be a standard model.
GNR is iconic. This band deserves a pin worthy of their infamy. In my personal opinion the DE version was a great attempt but fell well short of what it should've been. (Putting on flame retardant suit)
I say build both. The field of dreams movie said it best, Build it and they will come.

They may not apply to OP specifically, but it’s a pretty accurate description of the GnR fan base.

I definitely appreciate the fact that Toy Story has been a part of many adult lives. I was just asking a simple question to see if people with kids overwhelmingly prefer Toy Story over GNR. It wasn’t a criticism. Just a question. I guess I just feel like Toy Story has a similar feel to Wonka, so I’m a little surprised people are so excited about something that is one step removed from Wonka.

I can’t disagree more. I look nothing like the person that was described and am a GNR fan. The person described was a sterotype of a GNR fan. Stereotypes have some truth but many exceptions.

Toy Story as a theme does nothing for me. But for those with kids, I think it will sell very well. I really hope it does, because if it brings in big money, maybe Jack will consider a JJP match made in heaven theme "The Nightmare Before Christmas". All ages absolutely love this film, art, music etc.

I would not be a buyer of either game, but I sure will play them on location.

    I voted GNR...

i was never a huge Toy Story fan....I like theme, but just not one I love.. now give me a Mater's Tall Tales in... and I am all in.
The music will be interesting for Toy Story, I am assuming the toys will be great and they will get enough of the assets.... could have some really good humor... we dont have enough funny pins.... and, well, no brainer for a nice family friendly pin as well... who knows.. maybe I voted wrong. Looking forward to seeing what JJP brings either way. I really really liked Dialed In, hope it has same level of stuff.

    You’re kidding, right?

No, when exactly did that film become a classic and seem like it would make a great pinball theme?

Nightmare and Toy Story are both great pinball themes!

They are, Why? I'm actually asking here not being a dick, well maybe a little. I'm not saying I have a little dick, well............

If Toy Story is JJP's next pin, put me down for my first JJP pin.

CE. (Dream theme...well this and Grateful Dead which will never be made)

    #144 3 years ago

I saved a stash for GNR, and have been waiting for awhile (even passing up a couple of opportunities to buy a good Data East version). The good news is that if it is Toy Story, I will probably make my sixth pin the new Avengers or find a good Deadpool Premium or Elvira. There is a lot to choose from this Fall.

Toy Story hands down. Sick of the dad rock themes.

    #149 3 years ago

Both will sell by my guess Toy Story sells more as wider variety to appeal to others

    #150 3 years ago
    Quoted from adamsebas:

TS is the worst theme ever

If we want new people coming into the hobby, ts is a much better theme for a pinballmacine.
Also modern pins gameplay is moving more into story, with progression etc.
I.m.o. A good thing, esp for home use.
This means movie-series are more suited as templates for pinball gamecode/rules/story.
