My TOTAN shows up on Tuesday I would like to join you guys. I have quite a bit of work to do to the machine. Cabinet decals, playfield touch ups, playfield protection, pinball prosound, color DMD, I have a really nice Genie bottle for a topper design. I also have a real small one that plan to light with an LED on the playfield. I'm really lookin forward to being a part of your group. I found this sealed goody bag on eBay for $50.

I am back in. Just picked this one up last night. I will be restoring the cabinet.

Quoted from jazc4:

Congrats! How did you find it? I've been looking for a TOTAN to restore. I had a beautiful one I was forced to sell in 2009. I'm finishing up my STTNG and want to find a TOTAN to replace the one I had. I miss it big time.

I got lucky. The prior owner put it on Denver Craig's List. I was able to get to it first with the help of a friend. I restored one a few years ago and let it go with most of my collection at the time to generate some $$ for finishing my house. I have slowly built back most of my collection with better machines. This one is in much better original condition then the one I had.

Looks great! One thing on this new game I just bought that looks good is a spot light with a blue LED right at the Genie. It brightens up that dark area nicely.

Quoted from Markharris2000:

After owning one for 20+ years, I sold mine last summer for $9500 in pristine condition. I though I was over it, but I have a sense I will end up back in the club at some point soon. TOTAN is an amazing machine.

I feel your pain! or at least I did right before finally having the chance at getting another game. This machine was built in Waukegan Ill. I was born there. There is not much to Waukegan, But it adds a bit of cool trivia for me. Finding one of these is harder now than an original AFM. I know there is always the remake threa,t but after the MBr debacle, that threat seems to be less and less as time goes on. (just my opinion)

Installing front decal now. The metal protector is one to use.

Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Looks great! RADCALS?

They are decals but they are not like the originals in that they have texture, especially on the Genie and The Girl on the back box. The black portion of the artwork seems to match the black on the cabinet better. (if that make sense) The decals came with the game. I did not ask the previous owner where they came from. I did one these five years ago with the ones from Phoenix Arcade (the really nice ones before PPS). They looked and felt like these.

Quoted from Soulrider911:

keeps the nostalgia and is more rewarding due to the effort involved.

There is that.... I use the wet method so I was a bit annoyed at all of the bubbles that would not smooth out after applying, so I slept on it and in the morning, all the bubbles were gone! Nice and smooth. That rarely happened when I used Next Gen decals.

#2153 2 years ago
Quoted from Soulrider911:

The end result is cleaner at the corners,

I use the black Sharpie trick for the clean corner look on both Rad Cals and Decals. I want the artwork to look like it was painted on the cabinet.

#2155 2 years ago
Quoted from Pinkitten:

I love new cab decals but I’m not quite there yet. So I’m trying Radcals to bring my cabinet up where my Mirco playfield is. My first try on the head went fairly well. Next the cabin

Just did my FT with Rad Cals. Much easier to install! If you use a black sharpie to tone down the raw edges on the corners they will look like glossy paint on the cabinet. The key for getting the nice corner look on the bass cabinet is to do the front one first and leave just a tiny bit of overhang on the corners so that the side Rad Cals can just butt right up to the front one.

#2157 2 years ago
Quoted from Pinkitten:

Or were you referring to the edges of the Radcals?

The edges of the RadCals and the decals. The RadCals are thicker so they have more of an edge to hide than the decals. Never thought of sanding, I didn't think it would be necessary. The edges of both appear white. The Black Sharpie just tones that (white edge) down to where it is not noticeable.

Damn It Man! My game has “The Buzz Kill”

#2160 2 years ago

Noticed yesterday that my Lock Diverter was not working when playing. Had some time today to investigate. Put the game in test/solenoid/33 Diverter/High
No Joy. So lifted the playfield and found no voltage on the Red/Purp wire on the coil. HMMM getting warmer... Put the PF down and opened the Back Box checked the flipper power fuses and yep the 4A fuse was blown. Replaced and waited to see if it would stay up.... OK back to the test mode... ok it works, but not very good. Put the playfield back up... I'm going to remove that diverter coil and have a look... took it to the bench... Damn, can't get the coil sleeve out! Hmmm wonder if this coil has had a lock on? OK got the sleeve out finally and it has burr inside. I don't have a coil but Maybe...Maybe... a new sleeve would do it? I have one of those. Put it all back together and it works perfect. So now I am wondering why was that sleeve so boogered up? Does that coil typically run warm? Anyone, Anyone, Anyone ??

Finally got the Buzz Kill dealt with. Ordered and installed S2 Rom

#2164 2 years ago
Quoted from thechakapakuni:

What’s the Buzz Kill?

Thats the condition where your machine at random makes a very loud buzzing noise. (like a dryer signal into a megaphone)
It’s caused by a failed S2 Sound ROM. It happens with TOTAN and AFM.
It really sucks. You have to replace the ROM.

#2168 2 years ago
Quoted from Initiative:

wow thank you - I've got that going on and it scares the shit out everyone in the house. never knew what it was!

Yep! The power of Pinside! Thats why I mentioned this. I remember running around trying to figure out what that damn noise was. It took me so long to finally figure out it was totan doing it. AFM will also do that. I just got one of those in April and low and behold "The Buzz Kill". As soon as I heard it for the first time I knew what it was and what game was doing it. I just upgraded all the sound ROMs on that one.

#2171 2 years ago

So I decided something had to be done about the silly snake lamp. I went with a Comet Flexible Slow Color Changing LED.

#2176 2 years ago
Quoted from thechakapakuni:

ow for that snake plastic one that shines in your face. Really need some mod to hide that

Yeah thats what I am talking about. Once you remove that lamp and install the flex LED, the LED shines downward onto the Skill Shot Ramp instead of in your face.

#2178 2 years ago

Finished with exterior.

Looks fabulous! May I ask where you got the gold lockbar from? Or did you just get the stock one plated? They're a nightmare to find over here in Europe, and I may need to try and source one in the States.

Thanks. I got lucky there. That lockbar is an original TAFG bar. It is solid brass. It looked terrible so I replaced it. I had this laying around and I polished it using 800 grit sand paper and some Mothers. I typically buy the brass plated bars from Chris Royalty at Pinball Plating.

#2182 2 years ago

Yesterday I started getting a "diverter broken" flag. The diverter seems to be working properly. I tried to clear the flag playing and it does not seem to want to drop. Any suggestions? It operates in test properly also.

Just wanted to know what was under that Bazaar Cliffy. Looks like just a very small bit of chipping of the clear coat on the edge. I'll take It!

#2206 2 years ago
Quoted from Green-Machine:

Your scoop is missing…..

Thats It! I knew something was wrong…

#2209 2 years ago
Quoted from Pinkitten:

Are you leaving the Cliffy off?

No, I put it back on. It is just the Cliffy not the Mantice. Mantice is great, but it does make that Bazaar shot harder. If your going to play it, you need some kind of protection.

#2211 2 years ago
Quoted from Pinkitten:

Mine isn’t the Mantis either, it was just the Cliffy. It still wouldn’t fit a ball after install. But my playfield is a CPR reproduction. The scoop hole may simply be too small. I even installed 2 different scoops to see if that fixed it. No luck.

Interesting! I had a CPR pf in my last TOTAN but I used a pf protector on that game instead of a Cliffy. You are probably better off without the Cliffy anyway. We don't play these games like they were played on location.

Quoted from Boof-Ed:

Just thought I’d share my almost completed restore. Just got the caution label vinyl transfer on the backbox to apply once it arrives. Tossing up if I put a gold chrome trim around the back box edge. Might be a little too much gold.
I’m putting this in a show and shine section at a local pin festival in a couple of weeks and it was touch and go if everything would arrive in time. Luckily almost all of the items have arrived.

Looks really Nice. TOTAN looks really good with a brass plated coin door also.
