Joined the club today, finally after looking for a nice one for months. This is a special game. It’s obvious the first time you plunge the ball. They don’t make them like this anymore. That ramp is bonkers!

Quoted from Markharris2000:

Looks like a great shape machine. You'll really enjoy it. Check out all of the bulbs... many are hard to gain access to so they are left blown out for years. You can replace many from the underside if needed. Also, check the plastics to see if/where they are cracked. Most of the plastics are still available as NOS. Also, see if the two Newton balls are loose. The ball usually becomes unthreaded from the post and needs to be replaced. $8 parts, but harder to replace. Check the tiger-run magnet post and see if it is smooth surface. It may need to be re-worked (I used the TwilightZone post to replace it much better). Lastly, check all the rubber. Some of the harder places to change are left alone to deteriorate (upper right corner for instance).
If you need help, this thread of owners has solved nearly every issue you might find.

Thanks! This one was a partial restore about 3 years ago, with CPR gold pf and all new ramps, mechs, plastics and rubber. So I just need to add Cliffys and update a few things to my taste. The cabinet is clean with very little wear so that wasn’t restored. So far it’s a great pin. The spinning lamp base wasn’t flush with the pf, and the tiger magnet was too low too. The ball was getting stuck on it. I adjusted them both and it’s playing well now. I got 6 of 7 jewels. Great game with plenty to do, but still feels like the end is feasible without packing a lunch. Fantastic ramp with so many diverters and loops!

Just picked up a nice HUO TOTAN yesterday. Really nice condition just needs my LED treatment and a cleaning. ColorDMD and topper. Can't wait to put some play time on it! I'm going to order the cliff protectors for it. Any other cool mods/options? Seems like there is a ton of programming in this one. One of my grail pins.
[quoted image]

Welcome and congrats! I just joined a couple weeks ago myself and I love this pin. The design is just clever as hell. The use of diverters and the innovative mechs make this game stand out in any collection. I understand why this game is such a grail pin for many collectors now. It really needs no mods. But you can change or upgrade a few things. I went with the purple base for the spinning lamp. I don’t know if I have the upgraded bazaar scoop, but since my example was restored only about 3 years ago, I’m going to guess yes.

Enjoy your new game, and that’s a sweet lineup you have!

Thanks. I'll try and wait on ebay for a bit. Does Pinball Center ship to the US?

They don’t, unless something changed. If you can connect with a Pinsider in Canada, or in Germany, maybe they can help you out. That’s what I’ve done when only Pinball Center had the part I needed.

Does totan have a video mode

No video mode. No third flipper. No kickback. No auto plunge. Yet one of the best games of all time!

Quoted from Soulrider911:

Hey TOTAN folks! I am finally in the club. Question for you all, I was just paying it and noticed that my Bazaar kickout goes straight down the middle. If I hold up my right flipper it will barely hit the tip to deflect it. Is this by design? I am thinking of trying to adjust. Thank you
[quoted image]

Definitely shouldn’t kick out SDTM, but that’s what mine was doing when I first bought it. I tried bending the hood and made it worse. I replaced the scoop and it’s been perfect since, kicks to the center of right flipper every time. Just my experience. You may be able to adjust yours. Good luck!

#1963 3 years ago
Quoted from Soulrider911:

so after all that,,, i just played a game... SDTM still

I know your initial effort didn’t fully correct the problem, but bravo for the photos and detailed info you shared. Those before/after pics looked like the problem was perfectly corrected. I hope you were able to adjust the scoop again and fix it. Thanks so much for sharing your hard work, it’s still very useful and might save others some time. I had to replace my scoop, after which it works perfectly. I would also mention that I was able to temporarily adjust the trajectory of the old scoop by simply placing a small, postage-stamp sized piece of thick tape on the underside of the scoop hood. The ball would hit the tape and it seemed to take just enough speed off the ball to send it to the right flipper. Worked for a couple months until I replaced the scoop.

Can anyone confirm for me if all the bulbs are 13v under the spinning lamp? I read the manual and still can’t tell for sure. I think they are.

Thanks!

Quoted from Markharris2000:

Pretty sure these are standard GI type bulbs, #555 wedge if I remember correctly. That would be 6.3v bulbs. Pretty tough to change those bulbs without removing the lamp, so if you are in that area anyway, you might want to remove the disk and clean the UNDERSIDE and the SIDE of it thourougly with alcohol. It makes a world of difference! (Alot of people probably never realized there ARE two bulbs under there because they never get replaced by route operators due to the difficulty in doing so). And if you want to get fancy, PPS has Purple and Clear OEM versions of the disk, about $22.

Thanks for the tip! I actually just replaced the red spinning base with a new purple one, so no need to clean it yet. I’m not sure the bulbs are 6.3v though. I know at least one under there is a flasher and is 13v, and I am pretty sure the old bulbs I removed from under there were 13v, but I’m not 100%. Will a 13v bulb work in a 6.3v socket? I know the other way round could be a big problem. A 6.3v bulb can melt or fry in a 13v socket. I made that error once on an X-Men. Hopefully someone has replaced these recently and knows. Is there a way to tell from the socket itself or the wiring?

I decided to repaint my genie last night.
Now I just need to find a nice way to light him when I stick him back in the pin. Has anyone had good luck with adding a spotlight to make him look more dramatic? If so, where did you hide the spot, and what color did you use?
[quoted image][quoted image]

I was lucky to find a TOTAN with the genie modified to have lit eyes and red glowing ball in his hand. Lights up only when genie is hit or activated in a mode.

Quoted from pacman11:

That’s a great idea with the fireball! What is the fireball made from or where can that mode be bought from?

I’ll have to look at it, it was already modified when I got it. I’m guessing a clear plastic marble with a hole drilled and tiny LED behind or inside it.

That is one awesome, glossy genie! I’m not sure you want the ball slamming into that guy now! What about a fanny pack made of those blue cushions to absorb direct shots? Great job, I need to get the courage to try that!

I love new cab decals but I’m not quite there yet. So I’m trying Radcals to bring my cabinet up where my Mirco playfield is. My first try on the head went fairly well. Next the cabinet...

Quoted from whthrs166:

Just did my FT with Rad Cals. Much easier to install! If you use a black sharpie to tone down the raw edges on the corners they will look like glossy paint on the cabinet. The key for getting the nice corner look on the bass cabinet is to do the front one first and leave just a tiny bit of overhang on the corners so that the side Rad Cals can just butt right up to the front one.

Thanks very much! I haven’t done the rest of the cabinet yet. I’m glad to know I should start with the front. That’s so funny too, I bought 2 sets of Radcals, one for my TOTAN, and one for my FT. So that’s next up after this one! One question, if a black Sharpie is used on the corners to get a glossy black paint look, would sanding and painting the corners be best? Is the Sharpie just more convenient, or do you prefer the look to black paint? Just curious. Or were you referring to the edges of the Radcals? Thanks again!

#2158 2 years ago
Quoted from whthrs166:

The edges of the RadCals and the decals. The RadCals are thicker so they have more of an edge to hide than the decals. Never thought of sanding, I didn't think it would be necessary. The edges of both appear white. The Black Sharpie just tones that (white edge) down to where it is not noticeable.

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks very much! I will try that method soon and post pics.

Just wanted to know what was under that Bazaar Cliffy. Looks like just a very small bit of chipping of the clear coat on the edge. I'll take It!

Are you leaving the Cliffy off? I bought one for mine, but it wouldn’t allow balls to eject after I installed it. Too tight. Even bending the scoop hood upward didn’t help. So I took it out. I put mylar around the scoop instead.

#2210 2 years ago
Quoted from whthrs166:

No I put it back on. It is just the Cliffy not the Mantice. Mantice is great, but it does make that Bazaar shot harder. If your going to play it you need some kind of protection.

Mine isn’t the Mantis either, it was just the Cliffy. It still wouldn’t fit a ball after install. But my playfield is a CPR reproduction. The scoop hole may simply be too small. I even installed 2 different scoops to see if that fixed it. No luck.

#2212 2 years ago
Quoted from whthrs166:

Interesting! I had a CPR pf in my last TOTAN but I used a pf protector on that game instead of a Cliffy. You are probably better off without the Cliffy anyway. We don't play these games like they were played on location.

That’s for sure. I probably average only about 50-75 plays a year on each of my pins, although the first year I tend to play them a little more. So although I install Cliffy protectors on most of them, I may not need to.

be prepared for a few negative comments about how the original should never be changed.

No worries, it’s just on my machine, so nobody else has to embrace it. Plus, I still have the original, and I’m sure at times I’ll use it again. It’s easy enough to swap them out, to try something different.

Quoted from Ecw0930:

Is it optos that make him register when he gets hit?

There should be a couple large stand up targets directly behind and at the base of genie. He simply pivots back when struck by a ball and triggers the switch. Check those switches in test mode and see if they register. There should be some discussions about the drop magnet mech in this forum history and people here can help with suggestions.

#2258 2 years ago

I suddenly lost my right sling, it wouldn’t fire with either switch triggered. One look at the original switch and I figured that was the problem, and both switches are daisy chained, so with one down, they both were. Replaced it and moved the diode to the new switch, works perfectly again. Nice when it works out.

Yep, same here. I was looking at them for my TOTAN too. $250 from Pinball Decals and $300 from Cointaker. I’m not sure how they compare in terms of quality. The last pair of standard mirrors I received from Pinball Decals were excellent. Cointaker is usually awesome too.

Quoted from Markharris2000:

I tore down a Totan last year to replace the ramps. Replacing the ramps takes some real patience, but replacing the scoop is easy. Remember that the coil part of the scoop assembly is a separate bracket piece from the scoop itself. Take some close-up pictures of the two brackets fitted together before you remove it. Also, when you re-assemble, you may need to reposition the coil bracket otherwise the ball may eject crooked and come out of the scoop SDTM.

I bought a backup scoop from Markharris2000 a year or so ago and replaced mine that I couldn’t get right. I tried bending the hood and everything else. I replaced it (pretty straightforward) and it delivers the ball to my right flipper every time.

#2308 2 years ago
Quoted from Ecw0930:

some kits say 2 1/2". I went with 2 1/2" and they fit nice

I do the same thing on mine, if 2 1/2 or 2 1/4 fit snug and have good tension, no reason to put 2” rubber on too tight and cause phantom hits. TOTAN is a fun game to customize, with so much color. My slings are yellow with purple posts lit with star post LEDs. The purple with clear posts looks great.

Well, i thought i had remedied my bazaar kick out, but played my TOTAN today (i don’t play it much) and it was kicking SDTM again… Does anyone have any tips on this… i swear I have tried slightly bending the scoop, shimming one of the feet, adjusting side to side… ?
If i hold the right flipper it can barely bump the ball upon exit of the scoop… but its def not optimal for realistic game play
I do have the mantis one not sure that matters?
Cheers

I ended up replacing mine, but my prior scoop did this and I found an easy temporary solution. I put some thick 2-sided tape on the underside of the scoop hood. The ball would make just enough contact on the tape to alter the kickout from SDTM to the right flipper. It’s easy and worth a try. It solved my problem for months. You just need the right thickness under there, so you might need to experiment with it.

The left option will always be Collect Jewel - there's no way around it. The rule at my house is to take the right-flipper option, unless you have the ruby.

Ruby is always a nice way to grab two quick jewels. I try to spin the lamp more than I should, as the bonuses can be huge if you get tons of spins. It does make ball control dicey. I can collect all the jewels about every third game, I agree it’s not super hard. But I always lose the second half of the wizard mode, the battle with the genie for the princess. I just can’t free her from that bottle! Such a great pin.

As soon as you get to the bazaar, hit both flippers to skip past the animation. If you do that four times, the reward is a new cow (and 1M points).

Tilt Graphics makes nice blades that are very popular on this game. Maybe more than any other game, I see these same Tilt blades on lots of totans. Another cool version is by Flyland. See pics below…
Gold mirror blades look amazing on TOTAN too, but are about double the cost.

Sooo I guess I should have listened to you guys and gone with the Tilt Graphics blades. I got an email ad sent to me for a sale at Pingraffix. I wasn’t aware they carried TOTAN but I did get my JJP GNR side blades from them and they were awesome, perfect match. So that and the discount I decided to go with Pingraffix. They arrived and they were rolled up in a box. Not a biggie but inspecting them the graphics were pulled from the backing in several places. I had to peal and restick them to be sure they went on right. The right side one had a crease. Again, I’m pretty easy going but included a pic for reference. The main issue is the colors. Way off the playfield and the rear graphic. Seems way to UV purple vs the rest of the pf and doesn’t match the orange at all. The Tilt Graphics looks better. I’m just gonna play with them for a bit and if they bother me I’ll just buy the Tilt and replace them. Figured I’d post a heads up tho in case you were interested.[quoted image][quoted image]
[quoted image]

Yikes. The creases are refund material. I like Pingraffix too, I have their blades on a couple pins. But I do feel Tilt makes the highest quality, packages them well, and they apply great and look awesome. I would email Pingraffix, attach pics of your blades, and ask for store credit, for down the road. Then order the Tilt version!

I buy these little guys off eBay. They usually come from China and take a few weeks to arrive, but are like $3-5 each. I have a bunch of them I use on BSD, Elvira, etc.

I also recommend these brass skill shot brackets from Pinball Plating. Very sharp!

Is there a certain Cliffy version for the scoop that works well for people? I have a Cliffy for it, but it didn’t work with the scoop hood clearance being too tight. I tried bending the hood but nothing worked, I mangled the hood and installed an entire new scoop. Cliffy didn’t work with the new scoop either. So now I just use Mylar there until I can find one that doesn’t impede the ball.

Quoted from thechakapakuni2:

Ok I played a little bit of the Digital version of TOTAN last night (TPA) and noticed a couple shots I haven’t seen IRL. #1 First off is the Harem sneak in which is the very right orbit into the ball lock. I’m guessing I’ve never done it. #2 is when you get a weak right ramp diverted and it rolls back. The digital drops the ball into the right return ramp. On my game, the ball rolls all the way back into the pops. Not sure if I need to tweak something or is that normal. #3 is the secret lock. If you get a weak left diverted ramp the ball falls down into the lock. I do notice there is a very small split in the ramp but not sure if a ball can even fall through that.
Any thoughts on these shots and have any of you accomplished them?

The harem multiball happens on my TOTAN every once in awhile. I get the sneaky scoop from the pops, so the more shots to the pops the more I see that infrequent multiball. Cool when it happens. I don’t think the secret ball lock happens on mine. But with 3 ball lock lanes, it’s pretty easy to lock em up.

Ok, now that the Secret Lock & Harem Sneak in are working. I’m curious about the right ramp fail rollback. The digital version always drops a failed right ramp into the right return ramp. Right now mine sends the ball all the way back into the pops. Does everyone have the same result from a right ramp fail shot?

Mine goes into the pops.

Happy holidays pinheads. My wife got me some pinball socks. Lol. TOTAN, JM and Bad Cats. At my age, gotta expect some socks!

I installed Radcals 3 years ago. I was happy with the result. The color was slightly different, but I think mine are even different from the recent version depicted above. So over time, they could be closer or further from the original, depending on when they are printed. Certainly, we see color variations in decals too, depending on manufacturer.

It's great that you like the way yours looks. I just wish the colors on the RadCals looked more like this. Where the background is a true black and not brown like the RadCals are.

I agree. Should be black and light blue, not brown and turquoise. I see it now. That’s unfortunate.

Mine came with the eyes lit and a red fireball in his hand. I wanna do the custom paint job others have done and posted here.

Quoted from Markharris2000:

When you paint the genie, clean it good first, and then use some adhesion promoter spray coat before you lay down the color. As for color, there are several blues that seem to match the original colors, so search this thread for recommendations. (I have some of the cans around here still if you need the color names.) I used some tiny silver streaks in the hair, and liked the body wrap at his waist to be gold. (But you can do anything you like.) Lastly, two coats of clear will work best, and then let dry for a week or so before you reassemble.

I saved this example. The adhesion promoter is a good idea. I might try this.
