This drop target bracket has a broken stud for the coil stop. The full bracket seems to be out of stock at the places that carried it. Those studs are pressed in, it could be repaired but I was curious if the newer style Williams bracket would would work. So I thought I’d experiment with one.

The slots for the lamps are narrower and the the holes for the mounting screws are spaced slightly further apart from the front to back.

The bracket comes with adjusting screws and the rest ledge. The rest of the parts I used were from the original assembly. They all fit correctly including the opto board.

The mounting screws closest to the targets fit in the original holes. The ones further got put in new screw holes, but it mounts up and the drop targets fit into the slot in the playfield.

The new ramps came in! I have everything cleaned and transferred to the main crossover ramp.

Unfortunately the funnel depth on the new crossover ramp is about half a centimeter more than the original.

This is a problem because it puts the bottom of the funnel too close to the playfield. It does not allow clearance for a ball to exit or pass under the funnel.

I intend to raise the whole ramp up slightly in the funnel area. I can’t go too high though because the diverter is right next to the funnel.

#361 2 years ago

Time for the belt sander....

#362 2 years ago

I am going to try to shorten the funnel a small amount also. I don’t want to get too close to these holes though because that would create weak spots in the funnel.

Looking good! Where did you get the new ramps?

#364 2 years ago
Quoted from SkaterVet:Looking good! Where did you get the new ramps?

New ramps came from Freeplay40. They look very nice. It took some tweaking to get the crossover ramp to fit correctly so the ball has clearance under the funnel, but I think the necessary adjustments could be made to the funnel moving forward. I think I got some of the first samples of these ramps.

#365 2 years ago

I sanded the funnel ( using a block) and I removed as much and got as close to the holes in the funnel as I felt comfortable with.

#366 2 years ago

I also added some washers under the posts and I now have clearance for the ball to exit and roll under the funnel.

I’m on the list with Free Play, but have not heard from him yet. I wonder if the funnel issue has been resolved in later runs? If not, it looks like your solution isn’t terribly difficult. Thanks.

I think I got a crossover ramp from the first batch ever ( I know he just completed these very recently). My friend had been in contact with Freeplay40 for a while and he did also send him a link to this thread and let him know that the funnel depth is a bit too much. I would think he could make the adjustments needed for the ramps going forward from here. Depth needs to be about a half centimeter less and the holes in the funnel need to be up higher. I assume the holes are drilled after the ramp is molded, if so the adjustments needed should be fairly easy. If not then yeah you can do the minor adjustments I did and the ramp will fit and clearance can be made under the funnel. I would not let minor adjustments hold me back from getting new ramps if my game needed them. Freeplay40’s ramps look very nice and I am glad he took the time to make them.

#369 2 years ago

I did also turn on game number 2 for the first time. As always there will be plenty of adjustments to be made to get everything working correctly. But turning a game on for the first time after having it completely tore apart and seeing it come to life is always fun.

If you look at the pictures in post number 369 you’ll notice the GI on the left side of the playfield is out. After doing some tests I narrowed the problem down to this relay board on the bottom side of the playfield.

#372 2 years ago

Thought for sure it was going to just need a new connector. So I replaced the connector. And that did not fix it. Ok let’s reflow the pins, nope the GI on the left is still out.

Hmm? I thought for a minute, then I reflowed the relay itself and the did it! I now have all the GI (well all but that one damn pop bumper)

The pop bumper light was just the led itself, the wire on the wedge base was just bent oddly and wasn’t making good contact in the socket.

Tracked down a number of minor issues and the second game is getting very close to completion. But this was something I knew I’d have to take care of at some point. One of the games had a shitty “homemade” wire form gate at the entrance of the “vertical” ramp. After being unable to find one I knew I’d have to make one.

image (resized).jpgimage (resized).jpg
#376 2 years ago

Here is a picture of the nice original gate and the one I just made. I think the gate I made will function just fine. My friend’s game will get the nice original gate and I will use the one I made for my game.

I also just confirmed that this 24 volt control board works as a replacement for the board with the relay. If I was unable to to repair my board I could have used this. It has a different Williams/Bally reference number than what the Radical! manual shows but it plugs right in an works.

After adjustments and replacing one switch this game is working as it should and playing nicely. I am going to try and find a suitable replacement for the chrome trim on the speaker grill but at this point the game is basically done.

Your Radical looks awesome!

I recently did (2) Game Show's... here's a picture of the wider peel and stick plastic automotive chrome, I got at my local auto store. Large roll does 2 sides of the car at about $20.

Note: this is the only pict I have. It's the wider version 1/2" as I recall. I got the slightly narrower one and put it on the other game. I liked it a bit better. Very easy to install.

Thank you! The stick on automotive chrome is exactly what I was looking at. Nice to see it on a game. I just ordered some of the half inch.

Yep... that's it.

Comes in 1/2" and 3/8". I think I prefer the 3/8" over the wider 1/2". I don't know what's on Radical. I've used it on Game Show & Dr. Dude. It looks really good!

#389 2 years ago

I got the half inch because that was width of the original trim on the Radical! I am very happy with the way it looks. For cleaning the glue residue and remnants of the old trim I used googone and a toothbrush. Then I cleaned the whole panel and blew it off with an air gun. Prepped the surface with alcohol and the new trim adhered nicely.

Sorry, the super nice one isn’t mine to sell. Also I am enjoying the layout with the ramps and diverters feeding different areas of the playfield. This game has a unique layout and flow to it,(way different than anything else in my collection) so mine is not for sale either.

#392 2 years ago

May I ask what modifications you performed to make it sit flush with the posts. Mine sits just under 1/4 " over the posts. Won't go lower because it bottoms out on the spinner housing. Should I cut some spacers and bolt it down or modify the posts and lower the spinner?

20220209_170038 (resized).jpg20220209_170038 (resized).jpg
#393 2 years ago

I put 2 washers under that post and sanded the funnel a little bit. There still may be a small gap between the post and the ramp after doing these 2 things but you can push it down as you tighten the screw to hold it flush Other than the sanding of the funnel I consider the modifications pretty minor and all the shots function correctly. You can add or remove washers at different locations until you get the fit you want. Do minor adjustments and test, you may have to fit your ramp several times before you get to the proper placement and functionality.

Both of these games are getting nvram. My soldering skills and equipment are alright. I feel very comfortable doing things like headers or transistors on but putting the nvram in did worry me a little (especially since both cpu boards were in very nice condition) so my awesome friend Scott soldered it in for me.

yeah, sorry I guess I forgot to finalize this thread. Both games are done. My friend was happy with the results (he got the nicer one that I concentrated this thread on). His was picked up over a year ago. I have been happily playing mine for a year. I took mine to MGC in 2022 and a bunch of people got to enjoy it there. It had a couple stuck balls in odd places that I had to take care of but it was a solid performer for the show.
I recently replaced the sound pot to smooth out the volume control. Other than that just playing it and having fun.

Cheers

Doug
