#145 here. 2nd pin and 1st NIB. Sorry for the long post. Hopefully it is better reading than the morning paper.
I've recapped stereo speakers before and that is about the extent of my experience with the inside of electronics. Well, other than soldering a wire back to the magnet on my Goldeneye and changing fuses. Need to use my multi meter? Gotta go to YouTube for that. Super crazy month trying to get mine up and running. Seriously digging around the bottom of any playfield for the first time. Is it a board (mine would not boot completely), dip switches set incorrectly, a data cable, hot glue (soooo much hot glue) keeping a pin from seating correctly?? Plug one thing back in incorrectly and all of a sudden something funky pops up further up/down the chain. Pile on top of that, a manual that is incomplete and not always getting the correct info (like dip switch settings) from Spooky made for quite the nerve racking experience.
Blind faith, a lot of self reassurance (and patience) and calls/emails with AJ at Spooky and I am now, finally, up and running 6 weeks later. Trouble shooting and resolving all the problems mine had has been a masterclass in pinball repair. I now feel like I have a greater understanding of the individual systems and how they work together. The experience has been a blessing and a curse.
Not booting resolution is murky as I was trying multiple things at the same time and was not always paying full attention to what I was doing. I replaced the opto board but still had the problem. Can't remember if the dip switches were set incorrectly from the factory or if it was hot glue keeping a data cable from making proper contact. But after all that it now boots.
Score display had a visibly blown LED driver. New display corrected that.
Multiple playfield lights not animating as they should and/or off or only illuminated in white. Either a bad board or incorrect switch settings. I documented, I think, 2 light boards with incorrect switch settings from the factory. Of course, that wasn't determined until after I replaced some boards but was still having the same problems. Didn't help AJ initially gave me the wrong dip switch settings. Once that was figured out, the lights work correctly. It could have also been partially due to light connectors being plugged into the board in an incorrect spot. It would have helped immensely if the manual had the diagrams for all the boards explaining not just where they go on the playfield but also what each connection on the board does.
I knew it might be a rough experience, from what I have read on the forums, regarding QC but I also knew, again from what I have read, is that Spooky has great customer service (which is true). AJ sent me everything I might need, and more, just in case. So I rolled the dice and have no regrets. I bought TNA CE because I love the game and I want to support Spooky. I think what they are doing is great and I hope they have the finances and staying power to continue and grow. People rave about CGC pins but they are just now, seriously, getting CC out the door when Spooky already did a small run of TNA and will soon be shipping SD out probably before I even get my CC SE+. Are they perfect at it? No. Are they getting better at it, yes. Will their QC improve? According to AJ they are aware it can be better and are in the process to refining it, so i believe that will soon be a yes.
