Quoted from trilogybeer:

Yellow does not cover good so in the areas where the wood has been exposed or any other darker areas I put down white first using the airbrush .

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I can't tell you how may restore posts I have seen where there is some amazing work being done only to have them try to paint a light color over dark and it turns out all muddy. A light coat of white before you put your lighter colors down makes it look so much better! Great job on the restore. I'll follow your progress.

Everything is unmasked . At this point I am going to clear the playfield again to protect the artwork I have done before starting on the text and black outlines .

For outlines on the more complex shapes I decrease the size of the shape I have already cut so that my black outline overlaps . Increase the size for the outer edge of the outline .

20170430_115626 (resized).jpg20170430_115626 (resized).jpg

#63 6 years ago

And test fit to make sure I will have the desired overlap .

2nd this request... Ive only done one playfield, and cutting the masking is IMO the hardest part. What is your work flow, and what equipment are you using to do your masking?

I have a vinyl cutter for cutting stencils. And I cut them out of vinyl . I use Gimp for drawing , or extracting images from a scan or photo . I export the images from gimp in jpg format . I use inkscape to trace bitmap and save as an eps file .These files can be imported directly into the progam that runs the cutter. I use Sure cuts alot 4 to run my cutter . This program can also be used to create images for cutting , all the circles I use for masking the lens inserts are done right in this program.

Silk screens were made for detailed text ( vinyl cutters can not cut such fine detail as a very small text .) I make the silk screens using a photo sensative emulsion .I use Kiwo Diazo , this product can be bought at michaels craft stores . Alignment for text will be a bit difficult but it is the last thing I will put on so if the alignment is off I will clean the print off and try again .

And the cabinet is waiting for this playfield .

Advantages of using vinyl vs a paint premask +some premask materials are intended for waterbase paints and react with automotive paint .
+vinyl is much cheaper than most masks rated for automotive paint and does the same thing .
Disadvantage of vinyl
-it can leave some glue residue after the stencil is removed .
Not a huge problem , just need to clean residue before clearing or puting any color on top of it .
I use Lesonal surface cleaner for cleaning .

The star in the center insert still needs work but the inserts in the arrows are outlined and so is the large red shape in the middle of the playfield .

Ok , oulines are finished and I clear coated the playfield again to protect my outlines as I do the silkscreening for the text. This clear will be sanded , before silk screening .

Ok so Speedball is the company that makes the Diazo emulsion (not kiwo) . This kit can be bought at michaels for around $32 .

Sky jump is a different Playfield than free fall. Wayde was not interested in running the aab version.

#99 6 years ago
Quoted from RyanClaytor:

Then I immediately stumble across this:

Yeah , I knew those were coming and it would have been a great option for this project .But ,as CraigC wrote , the sky jump playfields are a little different .Most noticably the rollover lanes on the right side not only is the artwork different but sky jump also has one less lens insert over there as well .

#100 6 years ago

This playfield will be more 'Doug' so will be better.
