Since I enjoy restoration threads on pinside I thought I would share this one in hopes that someone would enjoy it . Freefall playfield.

Good luck with the restoration. It looks like there is a bit of work ahead of you. I look forward to seeing your updates.

Thanks , yeah this isn't going to happen over night , I just started the playfield and there will be a decent amount of hours involved with this .

First step (after cleaning ) is sanding . Need to remove old clear from the areas where wood shows so the clear I apply will be uniform in color. Sanded the whole playfield , removed flaky paint and leveled the planking areas where the grain had raised .

I'm seeing a funky retheme happening here ....

Total Recall Freefall perhaps? Hmmmm

rd

#10 7 years ago

Sorry Dave , no retheme on this one , just trying to make it look as good and close to original as I can .

#11 7 years ago

Sanded flat , this playfield will need to be cleared an sanded a few more times to level it out .

Thank you to pinsider Electrocute for taking a picture or the trademark logo from his game for me . The one on this playfield was pretty far gone and would not have neen easy to work with . Here is the transparent copy and fit for size .

#16 7 years ago

Got my base colors mixed . Yellow will go down first .

#17 7 years ago

Awesome! How tough will all of that key lining be? What crazy person would go this far on an old em?

-c

#18 7 years ago

All done by measurements ,it won't be easy but all the screening will be done on top of a sanded coat of clear if placement is off I simply wipe off the print with a cleaner and try again . As for crazy people , I think it crazy to not have an EM in a collection.

#19 7 years ago

What kind of paint/ink are you using and how will you apply it? Silkscreening ink or airbrushing paint or . . .

#20 7 years ago

Automotive paint , airbrush for the smaller areas minijet spraygun for the larger areas . Text will be silkscreened with acrylic.

#21 7 years ago

Should be the stern freefall

#22 7 years ago

wow, you are going balls deep. This is going to be a very involved restoration. I'd have to charge a fortune to go this deep on a field in this bad of shape to start.

#24 7 years ago

Gottlieb freefall is more fun. Stern freefall is better looking.

1 week later
#25 7 years ago

Ok so after some clearing and sanding the playfield is now flat enough to start the paint work . The clear in this picture will be sanded making it more level than it is already .

That's the tits Dougie!!!

#27 7 years ago

Awesome work. Can't wait to see it progress. Mike

#28 7 years ago

How were the inserts? Did you have to do anything to level them out before applying the clearcoat?

#29 7 years ago

Inserts were not too bad . Just flat sanding and clear coat to level them out . I will be back on this project again soon . I have a few projects I'm currently working on ,trying to not fall to far behind on any of them .

#30 7 years ago

Cut some circles for masking the inserts .

Everything that needed to be masked off for the yellow coat is .

20161119_143727 (resized).jpg20161119_143727 (resized).jpg

#33 7 years ago

Yellow does not cover good so in the areas where the wood has been exposed or any other darker areas I put down white first using the airbrush .

20161119_150055 (resized).jpg20161119_150055 (resized).jpg

#34 7 years ago

And then the coat of yellow is applied . I went right over everything dusting into the larger areas to create a soft line that the next colors will be put down over

Let the yellow dry and sprayed the largest pink area.

The guy was masked , he will require just touch ups not a total repaint . Now that the area around him is painted I removed the mask .

#41 7 years ago

This is some crazy good work. How do you cut the frisket to get such perfect masking areas without cutting the playfield?

#42 7 years ago

Some of the masks are cut off the playfield with my vinyl cutter . The ones I cut on the playfield I just make sure I have a very sharp blade on my knife and cut them carefully . If I do happen to cut into the playfield I can bury the cuts with the next coat of clear . Black outlines will be the last thing painted on and they can hide some imperfections . Some areas on this playfield there is no black lines between colors . The most difficult black outlines to do will be the ones around the roll over switches where the wood shows through .

#43 7 years ago

Red .

Ok it has been a crazy 4 months , but I am finaly getting some time to get back on this .
Got some of the more detailed shapes ready to cut stencils , here is test cuts for the arrows and slings . Placed the part that will be removed from the stemcil onto the playfield to make sure my sizing is correct .

#50 7 years ago
