Hey all, so I wanted to see if anyone can relate to this crazy scenario I went through.

A few days ago I found out that there is a local service tech that works on old EMs and restores them. So I called the guy up and asked a quick question on his thoughts on a compatible EOS. He got very upset and told me that he wasn’t going to tell me anything and neither would anyone else if they knew whats good for the. because he is a professional and if he shared what he knew then he would be out of a job.

Ummm what the heck?! Thank god for this site.

Jesus that is horse shit.

There are two INCREDIBLE EM techs in my area. We call them in when we can’t figure shit out. They usually can get it licked. Best part about it is they will talk you through what they are doing and teach you if you want to learn.

Great guys and love having them over.

I've never fully understood that viewpoint; trying to keep generalized knowledge on how to do something secret. I think people who do that do themselves a disservice. Even if that person doesn't share, someone else can figure it out and share it anyway.

Granted, I can easily understand keeping a special recipe secret, but that's a specially developed end product. It's not general knowledge that you can just turn around and ask someone else about.

A service person's value isn't necessarily just the knowledge they have, but the experience on how to apply that knowledge, and to do it well.

I'm more inclined to hire someone who clearly demonstrates their expertise and competency, rather than someone who intentionally tries to keep you in the dark and never explains anything.

Dude sounds unstable. Stay far away.

It might been better if he helped and asked you to refer him to potential customers in future.

I'd call him everyday with questions.

Ummmmmmm, the guy is a service tech, were you planning on hiring him?

If the guy does service calls to repair pinball machines and you are a non-customer who calls him up randomly to pick his brain on how you can fix your game without paying him, I could see how that would rub him the wrong way. It would be like calling an auto repair place and asking them how to fix your car. You're basically asking them to work for free.

It is probably less that it is secret information and more you were trying to get his knowledge and experience without paying for it. If you want free help come here. Don't call a guy that feeds his family with his experience and ability.

The first thing I thought of when I read this post LOL :
