Hey, quick update and a HUGE thanks to everyone in this thread. I picked up my first pin locally after a ton of reading and research. I went ahead and decided to go the Stern Pro route and picked up a really nice AIQ machine locally. It plays great and I’m already loving it. Now just on to building my skills and locking those gems. I’ll still be on the lookout for that TAF I want, but in the meantime I’ve got something I can really enjoy with my family and ease into the hobby with.

Good choice. I've had several newer sterns and they've been essentially trouble free. Basically cleaning and new flipper coil stops around 1000 games.

If you're still considering an older game I'd recommend an 80's solid state bally or williams to learn the repair aspects. Lower risk if you make mistakes and a bit easier to repair given the extensive tech support and parts available.

    Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Buy a Stern Pro at around $7K, or a Premium at close to $10k, and yeah, that's what everybody else is doing.

I haven't bought a NIB Stern since JP, but are people generally paying MSRP now?

    Quoted from cards25:

Whatever you decide on, make sure you see it and play it in person. Make sure everything is working as it should. Do not buy a non working project for your first game.

    agree right here.

certainly does not need to be a "beauty queen" but it need to be in good working condition.

Early Bally/Sterns are good starter pins with parts available. But as stated, a newer low play game is a good first pin.

P.S. most people overpay for their first pin with all the excitement. Good luck and welcome.

    Whoops...congrats!
