Curious what people think. I was recently asked to name five things that were mechanically fun to do or see in pinball and I initially picked these:

- destroying a saucer on AFM
- hitting Rudy in the mouth on Funhouse
- destroying a castle on MM
- hitting the bell on AC/DC
- scoring a goal on World Cup Soccer

I've since changed my mind and picked a few others, but I want to see what people think here. Any mechanical action in the game, you can decide what that means in any way. Pick your TOP FIVE.

Pinbots visor opening. "Now I see you." This game got me hooked on pinball.
TRex lunch in JP. Dont think there is anything cooler to see.
Thing grabbing ball in TAF (though it annoys me now just because it takes so long)
Pop bumper lifting out of the field in CV. When I first played this game I was like "Where the F did that come from?" because I didn't actually see it come up.
Phurba diverters in Shadow. These definitely are fun to do but not so much to watch.

#3 11 years ago

Flippers.
Pop bumpers.
Eject hole.
Slingshot kicker.
Outhole ball return kicker.

#4 11 years ago

Ringmaster popping up on Cirqus Voltaire
Getting balls looping around the supercharger in Getaway
Hitting Rudy in Funhouse (creepy annoying bastard deserved it.)
Destroying the castle in Medieval Madness
Making the fish flop in Fish Tales

#5 11 years ago

Succesful jump on Banzai Run's vertical playfield.
Hole in one in NGG
Automatic (The thing flips) flipper in TAF - much more accurate than me...

#6 11 years ago

#4--The "Drop target"

#16 11 years ago

#5,6,7 etc-- flippers, pop bumpers, slingshots. etc

#17 11 years ago

#24 11 years ago

The Section of Play-feild on (Zaccaria's) "Time Machine" that raises and lowers the bumpers.

#25 11 years ago

It is mechanically fun to have a solid shot to a spinner - 9 ball's spinner comes to mind - it is just asking to be nailed.
It is fun to see balls on the upper and lower playfields at the same time during BH multiball.
It is fun to see the flippers zip and unzip on EMs.
It is fun to hit Rudy and watch his reaction when starting multiball.
It is always fun to hit a hole in one.

HM to Shadow ball lock and STtNG borg ship shooting the ball at the flippers.

#26 11 years ago

Coin acceptors/chutes.
Score motors.
Score reels.
Vari-targets.
Roto-targets.

#27 11 years ago

MM - Destroy the castle
AFM - busting down the saucer
Big guns - dual cannon shot
NGG - launch ramp/gofers
NF - getting the ball going lightning fast on upper ramp

MM Castle
POTC Ship
BSD Myst Multiball

FG Stewie Pinball

#35 11 years ago

Thing bar none is #1, because that blew me away when I was a kid.

Runner up probably the MM castle, specifically the drawbridge/gate

Tron's disc, there have been discos on pinball before, but the way Tron's works is special.

Frank and Drac from MB

The Champion Pub boxer

#36 11 years ago
Quoted from KenLayton:

Flippers.
Pop bumpers.
Eject hole.
Slingshot kicker.
Outhole ball return kicker.

so true, give me the basics

Pinball does not need toys in order to be fun or amazing.

#37 11 years ago

TZ magnetic flippers
BSD Mist Ball
Champion Pub Jump Rope and Speed bag

#39 11 years ago

CV Ringmaster has spot targets, magnet catch, bash toy, raised toy for scoop shot. And it can rise and fall during Ringmaster Special. Very versatile toy. Also it's a large enough scoop that you can fire two shots in it and it will register both separately. I know some modes want you to fire two balls underneath the ringmaster as quickly as possible for a double jackpot.

MM Castle has tons of stuff. Moat shot. Castle gate shot. Castle destroy shot. Then the lock shot as well which is technically part of the castle.

TOTAN's shooting stars are a great outlane save mechanism. They work far more consistently for me than something like TOM's Hocus Pocus save which activates sometimes when the ball is nearly underneath the flippers.

Frankenstein on MB has lots going on. Spot targets. Drop targets. Ramp shot. Bash toy. During Mosh Pit you cycle through ramp, spot, and then drop (Mosh Super Jackpot, so tough). Bash toy comes alive during multiball.

I like the new magnet on X-Men LE where Magneto catches the magnets and spins them. I've only played it a few times though but it was a great feature.

#40 11 years ago

No love for Tommy blinders? I thought that was nifty

#41 11 years ago

IJ4: I thought all the balls falling out of the trunk for multiball was really cool the first few times I saw it.

#42 11 years ago

No mention for Pinball Circus?

#43 11 years ago
Quoted from wonderpuddle:

Pinball Magic - floating ball on the magic wand
MM - the castle
CV - ringmaster

To these I would might add BSD's myst ball and the animatronic heads of Funhouse and Roadshow.

Special mention to GNR's 3 magnets going at once, and POTC's sinking ship.

#44 11 years ago

MM Castle
AFM Saucer
FH Rudy
FGY Stewie pinball
POTC ship

ACDC LE bell, TSPP garage door, BDK crane, TS battlefield and CP jump rope would be my top ten.

#45 11 years ago

How about the free throw on NBA? Seeing the ball launch across the playfield, go to the magnet and hover over the rim, before sinking into the basket blows my mind. Its mesmerizing, man!

The pirate ship was a stroke of genious. Made POTC one of Sterns top three titles sold. Might be displaced by acdc sometime soon???

#46 11 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

#1-- Release Odin

#2-- Release Wotan

Some of you really need a history lesson.

Release Fire Gods!

#47 11 years ago

t-2 cannon.

#48 11 years ago

I dont find the AFM saucer or MM castle that spectacular. mechanically there is not a lot to them.

I like the engine in corvette. those lift up horus targets in stargate.. the ball lock in waterworld..

#49 11 years ago

Sega Twister originated the magnet spinner multiball...XMen is a knockoff.
