My VUK coil (23-800) started smoking. The game first would reset itself in play and then when left on it began to smoke the coil. This coil has been changed before for the same reason. Any ideas if it's the coil again or something else is happening. Also if I trade the coil out with the knocker coil (same part) can I just put tape on each wire where the knocker wires connect to the coil or does the circuit need to be complete?

Sounds like the transistor is locking on and causing the coil to lock on and overheat. I would look in the manual and find out what transistor is driving that coil on the board and test it.
