The Who's Tommy Pinball Wizard
Data East, 1994Need some help with my Tommy CPU board. I sent it to be repaired because a switch and coil were not working. I get a call from the guy and he tells me it no longer boots. I get it back and was able to eventually boot it up but now fuse 5 on the psb immediately blows on start up. I disconnect the plug that was repaired and it doesn’t blow. Any ideas what is wrong?

Those transistors look odd. What part number is written on them? Where all of those transistors replaced?

I have several boards with the same style transistor. Data East used them, and they are strange with no metal tab on them. Plastic body.
These are lower profile TIP122 parts on the DE MPU in the the latest games such as Sega Batman Forever before Whitestar board set appeared. They are ST brand marked as SGS122. I have seen regular size TIP122/TIP102 installed where some of the original SGS122 had failed so there is no problem with them fitting in the board.

Yep. It's more typical to see TIP-122s there...they fit...and they are tightly packed. Why DE decided to pack those that close for both the regular and special solenoid drives is a mystery.

Looks like Q4 was replaced with one giant solder blob across all three legs... Dunno if that's the main issue, but I would definitely get that fixed while I was cleaning up the other crispy stuff in that area.
Yeah well you would have figured he would have cleaned up the Mess before he sent it back. Sloppy work and a board guy who says he doesn’t have the appropriate equipment to test it. I would mention his company name but I don’t want to kill his business.
If I can help with future board work needs, I’m happy to do so.
