This problem may be unique. Whenever it's time for multi ball to start, upon kickout into the shooter lane, the trunk registers false hits and spins back and forth. It only does this sometimes and occasionally shaking the machine will make it stop, but not always. It has the "ultimate trunk error opto fix" board and pinbits eddie boards. I bought the machine with these upgrades already installed and am extremely green in pinball repair.

Here's a couple of videos of what it's doing:

What do I need to look for to diagnose this?

Thanks

Hi,

Trying to think simple, let's assume the game is actually doing the right thing. It's scoring and reacting to what it perceives as ball hits to the trunk. Can you put the game into switch test and see if you can get the eddy sensor to fire on it's own?

It would be good to narrow down where the false hits are coming from as a next step. Even going so far as if you can narrow it down to the eddy board, unplug the board and make sure it goes away, etc.

Ok, I'll see if I can do these things. I'm new at this.

Above is a link to the switch matrix. You can also download the manual on Internet Pinball Database.
On the far right in the middle is switch 61 (85 for Column 8, Row 5) ; Tom Trunk hit.
It sounds like the Eddy Board is registering this switch without a ball in the area.

Could be a lose connection to the Eddy board.
Or a bad Eddy Board (sounds like you have the autoadjust board- not sure that can be manually adjusted). Or a bad Eddy Sensor Coil Board , part A-19237 on Marcos Specialties.
I would first assume a bad connection.

During gameplay I would think you would also see Trunk hits registering.

Put the game in Single Switch Test check to see if the switch is active with no ball by the trunk. Then put a ball up by the trunk and see if it registers.

This is one of a few issues I had on mine. It was the subway opto under the trunk. If it’s off and stuck closed (I think closed, could be open but opposite what it is supposed to be) it will act funky on multiball. The trunk will act up too. Test the opto, it’s like switch 36 or so.

Quoted from DrDQ:

During gameplay I would think you would also see Trunk hits registering.

It only registers hits during play when it turns around for the magnet to start multiball. All other times seem flawless.
I've noticed that the Eddy boards are only connected by a single screw, leaving them free to move around. Could this be the culprit? There are no two holes in the board that line up with the previously drilled holes in the playfield.

Thanks for giving me a start. I'm going to the Houston Arcade Expo this weekend, I'll check these switches and optos as soon as I get back.

Adii’s advice about the Opto is probably the more likely cultprit. But if those boards are not secure that could be an issue now or down the road

Ok, when I press test on the 36 switch, nothing happens. What do I need to do now?
Pictures incoming of the screen, the board under the trunk, and the loose eddy board.

Ok, I was just pushing the button thinking it would test.

I toss a ball in the trunk with the test screen up and it flashes "open" as the ball goes through as I assume it should. It's not stuck closed.

Is there a certain position the eddy board should be in or does it just need to be secure?

I got a tech over and he showed me there is a hairline fracture in the interrupter that I couldn't see. He says it's most likely the culprit. Ordering one from Marco's now.

Maybe the pinbits board is too sensitive and it’s picking up the frame of the trunk? These boards auto calibrate upon power up. The original board has a manual calibration you adjust turning a potentiometer. The optos don’t register trunk hits. The eddy sensor and board do that.

#16 5 years ago

I think the original board is in the coin tray. I'll check and see.

#17 5 years ago

If the auto eddy board is too sensitive, then what can I do about it? Will it have to be replaced? I can't find anywhere that has it in stock.

Just a guess but the ‘auto eddy’ could be defective. That board is not adjustable. I don’t know what to tell you on how to test I don’t have the trunk board. I would start with any aftermarket boards personally. Ingo board, auto eddy. I don’t have spare boards to loan unfortunately.
