can some scan the missing dr dude text?

    #602 5 years ago
    Quoted from toddtuckey:

Andrew sent me a box today...have not opened it yet, but I am sure he sent a few of the revised editions. I will compare it with the original version and see if he caught all the errors I had noted (I only got through perhaps 65% of the book and stopped). Todd

If I were in your shoes Todd, I wouldn’t even open the box. I would outline my middle finger on the top in a thick Sharpie marker and shove it back in the mail.

    #603 5 years ago

Marty further adds, re: my unwillingness to return the first printing at my expense as per paypal policy:

"Please post your reply on Pinside, we feel that Trolls should follow the rules."

    #604 5 years ago
    Quoted from canea:

After a couple emails back and forth and providing proof of purchase, they've agreed to send me the updated copy as well, so we'll see. Would suggest that anyone unhappy with the quality of the first printing send them a polite email requesting the new one. Might as well get the best copy, for what it's worth.
Edit: They want me to mail the old one back, at my expense, before receiving the new one. So, that's not going to happen. No Dr. Dude chapter for me! lol

Customer to pay, to mail demanded junk back? What a flat out moronic business decision.....

Even bookstores are only asked to mail back ripped off covers for returns, not the whole book.

its true, i worked at a crown books in college

I returned my book as part of a PayPal dispute to recover my money for the full ten volume set. So for me it was worth it. But the international shipping plus tracking was more than the value of an individual book. It'd be cheaper to keep the old book and buy a new one. Who's going do that?

    #608 5 years ago

Probably want the old one back so they can resell it.

I can dig it. I'm sure it's in the paypal terms. Thought they might make it right regardless, but it ended in just another dick move. I guess that's all us trolls on pinside deserve. :/

    Quoted from tacshose:

A simple google search of Andrew Macbain (The Pigeon Guy) and Ryan Ponto will show you that our pinball community has attracted another get rich quick scam artist, someone who has begged for money on Dragon’s Den and “created” 90+ products most of which have failed. Ryan’s “automated websites” are laughable and look more like cheap templates.
These guys have a proven track record of exploiting with a product then running off to the next thing, so this “publishing” fad for Andrew was never going to be long term...
When you read that Ryan and Andrew keep changing their titles, responsibilities, and now when it’s all going to hell wanna blame Todd the “freelance writer” it’s laughable. Reading that Andrew & Ryan were hoping to sell $300,000 in volume one books, printing them as cheap as possible, and with as little overhead as possible, this is showing their real plan all along...
This was a get rich and run scheme by Andrew and Ryan, and poor Todd got pulled in as simply the scapegoat it seems. Sad
Sadly no PM yet from Andrew about investing in the Hydrofoil company

Just a quick reminder to avoid these guys as looks like they have proceeded forward with more BS “books”

    #611 5 years ago
    Quoted from tacshose:

Im still trying to figure out how this clown even had the rights to a lot of images it looks like he is using...

He must be super busy running around taking thousands of photos himself since I see there is complete BS all over his very basic website claiming all kinds of other books, etc...

    What a tool...

I sincerely hope nobody else falls prey.

And can't wait to support others' future endeavours that are not assosciated with Andrew Macbain.

    #612 5 years ago

As per my PayPal dispute (see above) I got a refund on my ten volume preorder.

They sent me Vol 2 anyway. I believe the size and format is similar to the second print of Vol 1. No publishing improvement. Photo and paper quality are the same. Editing isn't great. The Penn and Teller interview was one half page long. The Desert Bus story was interesting (since I never heard of it before). But it's not pinball. There were a few short articles from their other "pinball specialists". Most of the book continues the previous format of reviewing random games. Except it's all apparently written by MacBain/Ponto. Half of each two page game review is about the generic origin of the game's name. For example, Hokus Pokus is about the origin of the phrase "Hokus Pokus". The other half is information that can mostly be obtained from IPBD. It feels like content generated for the sake of content. There were a few two-page photo spreads except they were off by one page. See half a picture then turn the page to see the other half. Not recommend.

The Schiffer books have already done all this in an exponentially better fashion.

Got my volume #2 yesterday. Didn't know about this thread until just this morning. Super disappointed and opened a dispute with Paypal since I was a sucker for all 10 up front. I'm late on the dispute and doubt it will go my way. Guess I can always have a bonfire with these books

Been lurking forever, adding to the travesty that is this book seems like as good a time as any to start posting. I was going down an internet rabbit hole last night, which I do a lot. And I eventually ended up on an Japanese guys pinball/indie games/general blog site. So I was looking around and found a link to a steam page of an digital pinball table based off a homebrew table that the guy also seems to have made irl. I was looking at it and was surprisingly struck by thoughts "hmm why dose this look so familiar". Then it hit me "wait a second this looks the game on the cover of Todd's book". And sure enough if you look through the pictures in the gallery on steam you can find the exact image they used on the cover after cropping. So not only did this guy take advantage of todd's good will. He's also blatantly stealing the work of people who can't even speak English very well and are attempting to keep pinball alive outside of the west. To have a few unaccredited images inside a book is one thing. To have one blatantly slapped on the cover is another.

I think I vaguely remember thinking this when the cover was first shown too, after maybe stumbling on to that steam page years ago (released 2016). Just took till now for it to all come full circle back around.

    The games steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/514570/Pinball_Parlor/
    The original company website: http://pinball.co.jp/
From the looks of it this guy is actually an operator in Japan too which is an extremely rare thing nowadays.
If this has already been discovered and discussed forgive me, I last read this thread like three or four months ago.

the book deal went so well that now they've decided to dip their toes into making pinball machines? this should go well.

Will they be undersized, finger paint art, not fit properly, be shipped unprotected in an envelope with a ton of stamps, etc?

    Maybe square balls?

Will there be a cheaper pro model with MSRP of around 30,000 (plus postage)?

My wife got me this piece of crap book for Xmas, at least her heart was in the right place

I read the first 10 pages or so then got to the dr dude section that was just a copy and paste place filler with the text from a previous game a few pages before hand. I was unable to go any further.

How could something this terrible even be possible. I would expect better from a 11 year olds half arsed effort on a school assignment done at 10pm on a Sunday night the day before it was due.

It even smells bad and feels damp somehow haha, look like it was printed on a $17 inkjet printer with knockoff eBay ink refills.

The guy who made this needs to be shot.

I hope you place this as a review on Amazon. The more people who post a review to warn people, the better.

    #624 5 years ago

Looks like I am getting $204 back, my full 10 book payment minus the 2 I already received. Now, what to do with these books?

    #625 5 years ago

This description of Volume 2 on Amazon reminds me of when a site pays some overseas workers to write content to rank in Google. No substance, just name dropping keywords for the search engine.

“The Pinball Adventure’s Team, will mystify you with a unique magical edition focusing on a number of the most important pinball machines that take magic in many different directions. Meet with Magic superstars Penn & Teller, and finds out what their ties are in the pinball world and learn about the video game they created.

Each magical pinball story will amaze you on how simple it is to prolong the life of your own pinball machine.

The series takes a close up look at many pinball playfields, testing the reader’s knowledge of what the machine the playfield belongs too. Black and white never before seen pictures of the black and white top billing movie stars.

This book, of course, will include the must have suggested resources for both buyers and sellers and unique Pinball collectors.

If you like magic and pinball, this book is a must-have for anyone who’s ever wanted to pull a rabbit out of their hat.”

    "bumps and grinds?"

Do these people even speak English?

Why are people who can barely write in the publishing business?

    #634 5 years ago
    Quoted from PinballBuzz:

Yup. You. YOU keep coming back. You take pride in the fact that you continue to sell books with major quality issues while placing the blame on others. What do you want for that? A cookie?! I am fairly certain you won't be seeing a dime from anyone who has read this post. The only reason for your continued return, at this point, is to troll. I suggest you spend that time and effort creating a better product to brag about.

THIS, I have let every advertiser I have a relationship with know that I am no longer a customer due to their support of Andrew Macbain (The Pigeon Guy) and Ryan Ponto. My most recent PM has been to Mirco.

Sponsors should receive a full refund immediately as all pinballbuzz has done is hurt their reputation immensely in the eyes of the Pinball Community.

Hey @pinballbuzz, you should set up Google Analytics on your site before you start mentioning webstats to potential advertisers. I guarantee your claim of 200,000 includes spam traffic (all websites have it), repeat visitors, and your own traffic. An investor deserves to know unique traffic as well as time spent on site, bounce rate, pages per session, etc. Saying 200,000 visits is pretty misleading. Plus you'll just be happier with the data you get from Google Analytics compared to the garbage WordPress Stats will give you.

I would venture to guess that a LOT of visits are from people clicking over from here to go WTF....not exactly new customer hits.
