HI guys,
Is it a silly idea to mylar a PF or is it best without?
Thinking about protecting my AFM.
It has a very thin clear coat, but I don't think its enough.
I don't want to risk clear coating it myself.
Thanks.
I would say no. Keeping it cleaned, waxed and making sure your balls arent chipped will protect it just fine. Adding mylar will only decrease the value of the game.
You could opt to only do high traffic areas. I wouldn't mylar the whole thing myself. When you would need to replace it you risk messing up the inserts, more trouble in the long run IMO. Like tat said keep it clean wax it now and then and maybe maylar high traffic (usual wear spots) and that is probably good enough.
I can't stand mylar. I don't really see the point. Like hawkeye said, preventative maintenance goes a long way. I have a screen protector on my old Nintendo DS so I get an idea of what it feels like, not to mention slowing down the ball, attracting dirt, and bubbling/peeling.
Quoted from tatman9999:I would not for home use. New balls and wax you will be fine.
Agree with tatman here. For home use the wear will be so minimal that mylar is overkill. Now areas around pop bumpers and slings, I would probably leave mylar if its there. Center of play field areas (if that's what you are speaking about) won't really "wear out" with normal play and good maintenance. Mylar was created for operators to put on there machines that received heavy abuse on location. If that's your goal, than by all means do it, but for most of us "hobbyist" on the site, it is not needed.

+1
I can't be anti mylar as many games with painted playfields would never have survived without it.
I have a lot of pins on location (one came from an airport with more than 50,000 plays) and it is still very good. I only mylar the real high wear parts. This Stern has no mylar at all.
