I have a Nip It machine a guy wants fixed and has a $1k budget. The machine is in good condition externally, but internally it’s has moisture and mice chewing wires. The wires I can deal with, but is the rust fixable? Or where can I find these parts to replace or an entire internal board, etc.

Any advice would he appreciated.

Kinda both, so I wanted to give it the college try. Ultimately he just wants a playable game, doesn’t mind the rust, etc.

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll see if I can find some.

#11 5 years ago

Exactly what I wanted to do was test the machine to see if I could get anything going before spending the hours on the rust. Does anyone have a “readable” schematic link? The one I found is too small to read after printing. I really appreciate the help on this and will be sure to update my progress as I go.

#12 5 years ago

Found it at Walmart online and had my local auto parts store, O’Reilly, price match.

For those of you that use the Evapo Rust, do you typically remove the parts and soak them or place paper towels over them while in the machine? I’m likely planning on pulling and soaking them, but time is money. Perhaps only the parts that are not functioning like the score motor?

#23 5 years ago

Anyone have a good schematic for printing?

#28 5 years ago

After the paper towels failed. It’s been sitting it a bath now for 13 hours, still tons of rust, been brushing it off every so often. I’ll check again tomorrow afternoon and report back.

I did the the scoring reel to finally start spinning, but the motor seems difficult to turn, better after oiling; hoping that’s normal?

Anyone know how to remove the plastic dial the numbers mount to? I’m assuming I’ll need to hammer it out with a punch, after removing the circuit board? I’ve tried to pull it straight off, but it’s rusted and barely turns. Thanks.

The bushing on the motor was bad, so I was actually able to use a larger spring combined with the original spring to hold it in place in lieu of replacement.

#53 5 years ago

I honestly don’t know? I know it’s installed correctly. Maybe it is and that caused the break? Can anyone verify?

Crap. Good call. Haha. Thanks! Hence why the roller likely broke. Rookie mistake. You’re the man!

Anyone have a pdf of the owners manual for Nip It? Seems to be hard to find.

Having trouble with the player unit sticking. It works fine when I move it manually, but it buzzes away when the machine is on. Does anyone have one they can share a picture of?

So after all the Restoration, this is where I’m at. If you could help direct me from here, I would appreciate it. The player disc buzzes when I try and start a game and the score motor just turns. Not sure where to go from here, I’m pretty new to EM machines, but you gotta start somewhere.

#62 5 years ago
Quoted from dasvis:

Nothing to do with the buzzing problem, but it looks like you need to adjust the unit so the finger on the wiper align better with the rivets.

Yes, I agree the wipers are a bit off, but when I turn it manually to align the buzzing persists.

#63 5 years ago
Quoted from HowardR:

Why do you call that the Player unit? Is it labelled? I think you're holding the 00-90 Unit.

I could be mistaken. I can’t find a decent manual for this game and most parts aren’t labeled. Thanks.

What actually runs the score motor and tells it to stop? Is it on the score motor leafs? I know there’s a reset sequence it does before stopping, but mine seems to go thru the sequence fine, but just doesn’t stop so I’m wondering if there’s something small I’m missing???? This machine is making me feel dumb.

The tilt switch used to stop the score reel, but now it doesn’t???

Yes, I can watch it open and close.

Quoted from chas10e:

Is the score motor "index switch" opening? on the score motor, top set of switch blades closest to the front of the machine. (I couldn't find "1A" on the schematic )

That’s interesting. I’ll try that and get back.

#109 5 years ago

I tried several different springs. Nothing... on my machine originally the bushing held the motor in place, but the teeth broke off so that’s why I added the spring. Honestly, I don’t see it being able to be pushed in with the original bushing entact. I’m really thinking the issue is my player unit since it doesn’t seem to respond to anything.

#110 5 years ago

I also have these wires that aren’t connected to anything. Does anyone have this machine that can verify?

I just noticed your motor is different or I’m understanding it incorrectly. My motor shaft doesn’t spin freely in the brass; it’s stuck in it. I’m assuming the brass piece is supposed to float in the bushing and the motor spins inside it?

#115 5 years ago

As you can see mine is stuck on the spindle. I guess I need to figure out how to get it off without ruining the motor.

Thanks for your help. What you’re saying makes perfect sense now that I understand the motor spins in the brass, the brass doesn’t spin the motor in the bushing. Derp!

the image in this post looks correct.
when I reassembled the parts from the pics I just posted I tested the machine and things seemed sluggish so I un-loosened the two screws a bit & ran until things meshed better. after that I snugged them down again and things worked smoothly again.
My finger on the shaft shows me pushing in the shaft in to engage the gear. you should see it pull in on its own when power is applied. The original spring disengages the gear when power is removed.
When I was asking about "the extra spring" you mentioned, I was referencing from the video you posted in post #48

#118 5 years ago

I got it spinning freely in the spindle. Now I’m curious if anyone has a solution for the broken bushing teeth that hold in the brass bearing?

I think my washer fix actually works, it moves freely now, but it’s still not stopping. Hmmm???

#130 5 years ago

The motor works great now, but still won’t stop. Going to try to add two washers as a spacer to compensate for the width of the washer in case it’s not allowing it to move left enough, etc.

#135 4 years ago

I’m assuming the issue must be in the score motor stack?

#138 4 years ago

You’re the man. That schematic really helped me understand how it works; got it stopped. It turned out to be the 500 point relay. I had no idea all of those switches controlled the motor, but I do now. Thanks again!!!

Quoted from HowardR:

These are the switches that keep the score motor running. If it's not a mechanical problem put slips of paper in them to find out which one is the cause.

#140 4 years ago

Now I’m just down to a few easy problems.
It’s popping out two balls, so I’m assuming that’s an adjustment issue.

#141 4 years ago

The EM pinball guide recommends using high tap and lots of waxing if you do. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

#143 4 years ago

Not so much. I learned a ton though and got to restore an old vintage pin. I like Solid State, but I had so many people with EM’s, I had to try it.

Quoted from Daditude:

With your customers budget, and all your work, are going to make anything on this?

#144 4 years ago

Anyone have any ideas on how I could safely replicate this before I put it back out into the world? I keep thinking plaster of Paris, but I’m a little unsure since there’s probably better products these days??? Mostly worried about the paint. I’m just trying to make a mold I can cast into brass or some metal later.

#152 4 years ago

I adjusted the ball release relay but it is still randomly popping out multiple balls...??? Any other ideas???

#154 4 years ago

Great information. I agree 100%, especially with swapping out the flipper coils.

I’ve actually decided not to high tap this game since it’s actually working very well, but I’m still curious about it so I may try it for a few games to see the difference it makes. I’ll do a video of the before and after.

Quoted from NicoVolta:

Hey! My ears are burning!
I've mellowed a bit on the never-high-tap thing. In general, if a machine is properly rebuilt, it "shouldn't" need to be high-tapped... but it might!
In a home-use environment, high-tapping won't make a lick of difference in terms of safety or reliability. Consider it a minor hot rodding tweak. Home games don't get anywhere near the amount of use commercial games do, so if you've done the full rebuild and it still isn't peppy enough... go for it.
Now, personally, I never start with high-tap because I want to evaluate what the machine is supposed to feel like on standard voltage. But here's where it gets subjective... some manufacturers/games feel a bit too slow on the default winding whereas others (particularly if blessed with DC rectifiers and such) almost feel too fast!
If the flippers are a little weak but everything else is great, I'll swap hotter flipper coils instead of doing a high-tap.
If all of the pops and slings are weak, I might high-tap (assuming there is no voltage leak/connection issue somewhere).
Everything is relative. Basically, if you've done everything else and it still needs a little more pep, go for it.

#157 4 years ago

Great idea. I’ll try it.

Quoted from dasvis:

I always thought it would be kind of cool to put in a switch to go between regular & high tap....

#158 4 years ago

Last thing I’m having trouble with is getting the 2nd Ball relay to engage. Does anyone know what triggers it? I thought the ball index would trigger it, but it is now working but the 2nd Ball isn’t.

#160 4 years ago

I’m basically done with fixing the machine. My last issue is I am having trouble getting the Game Over relay to work all of the sudden. It had been working, but now sometimes it engages and others it won’t. Ugh!

#162 4 years ago

I still have trouble with it kicking out two balls as well, but I tightened the spring (way tight) on the Ball Release relay and it works now, but it doesn’t seem like I should have to rig the spring to get one Ball instead of multiple balls. Any ideas on this? Wondering if it could be related to the Game Over relay issue. I get major sparking and clicking on the Game Over relay at times.

#165 4 years ago

I replaced all the leafs on the Game Over relay and it still does the same thing basically. I also removed the tight spring on the Ball Eject solenoid to ensure that was a cause and it’s kicking out more than one ball again; seems the super tight spring works, but I am curious as to why? Perhaps the leafs on the Ball Eject relay are shot? Or maybe so other small issue?

Turns out my Game Over switch relay was due to score motor 4E not making contact. Fixed. Now why do I get multiple balls unless I put the spring on tight?

Done!!! Dang this is getting too easy. Turned our to be the lock relay. Still not sure why it launches multiple balls without the taught spring??? But it works nonetheless. Thanks for all your help on this old machine. I’ll be around should anyone have issue on their Nip It let me know, I’m probably basically an expert at this point after this. Just kidding... I still have a lot to learn. In total it took me around 40+ hours. You can do the math.

#169 4 years ago

I’m having trouble getting it to play multiple players all of the sudden... any ideas?

#171 4 years ago

I’m almost certain my issue is in the reset relay on the make/break switch... I have a white/brown wire on the middle and a white/blue on the inner and a red/blue on the outer. I have adjusted the crap out of it and tests everything in the circuit and still cannot get multiple players to work. Sometimes if I push on the make/break switch it adds extra players, but it is very random. I’m also wondering still if it could be my coin door wiring. Help would really be appreciated... this is the last this I need to finish.

The total play meter adds one, but when credit button is pressed, it won’t add another player. It looks like the total play meter should trigger the coin unit step up, but it doesn’t.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding how the switch works?

#173 4 years ago

When I touch the white/brown wire to either side of the make/break switch it it does nothing, but I can ground either switch and it with reset the ball count and/or add a player??? A broken wire? I did notice sons kind of 1/2 WATT resistor on the schematic near the coin door; I don’t see it anywhere in my game??? Can anyone verify!!????

Help???

#179 4 years ago

It’s only draining the ball about 60% of the time, which tells me it’s the make/break on the reset relay, but still not sure why it’s not adding players???

#180 4 years ago

The unit in the back box, yes it has been cleaned and gone over. It was working fine???

Quoted from kermit24:

Have you looked at the player advance unit?

#181 4 years ago

I think that resistor is actually on the Jone Plug... I’ll test it. I did test the make/break switch on the reset relay that goes to the coin unit advance for continuity and it wasn’t a solid beep, so I’m thinking there’s some kind of short or interference???

Not sure what you’re asking?

What's the format of other resistors on the schematic?

#184 4 years ago

That resistor is reading 9.14 on both sides when I disconnect a lead and the game unplugged.

#185 4 years ago

Looks like it is the resistor in the schematic on the Jones Plug. Hmmm???

Does this make sense???

#186 4 years ago

It’s actually in the next circuit over, but I’m assuming it could cause interference if it’s bad???

#187 4 years ago

Resistor in schematic looks like it reads:
8200 Ohm 1/2 Watt???

It’s gray - red - red - silver in my game.

So at 9.14, I’m just outside the tolerance level according to the chart???

#191 4 years ago

Probably not enough to affect the game??? Curious???

#194 4 years ago

Still no luck. I’m gonna try a new resistor tomorrow, but I really don’t think that’s the issue... I had it working at one time and now nothing. Ugh!!!

#196 4 years ago

I believe I finally figured it out. Each time I pressed the credit button, from the first player onward, the game was triggering the reset relay; according to what I just read (3C) the Game is only supposed to trigger the reset relay for the first player, which resets the scores, players, and balls. However, the reset relay is only supposed to engage on player one, but not the subsequent players, which mine was so it was basically resetting the player count after I just added a new player. I haven’t physically checked yet, but it makes sense... especially after Rolf’s response.

One question Rolf, is the unit you’re referring to and end of stoke switch on the player unit in the back box? If so, I assuming I want it only touching for the first player and not touching for the remaining players to be added????

Now why would the Ball Release kick more than one ball???

#224 4 years ago

I’ll make one just for you Rolf. I totally understand... I was kinda winging some stuff in the beginning. Like I said, this is my first EM.

#227 4 years ago

That’s initially how I started testing, but I quickly found that it’s not reliable on an EM game as a contact that’s not in contact will beep anyways if it’s connected down the line.

Quoted from mbwalker:

Guru,
Maybe you can try to look at it from a different angle. Hopefully this wasn't covered before and I missed it.
Instead of mechanically checking the switches, how about using your multimeter and measuring across relay contacts (looking for voltages or the absence of voltages) to try to narrow down the culprit? Would that help? i.e. "I shouldn't have a voltage on this contact because these other switches should be open." type of troubleshooting.

#230 4 years ago

I did a bunch of adjustments to the game last night. Going to try it again today.

Ball release relay... it works now!!!

#240 4 years ago

Now of course it’s randomly taking a ball for going in the Gator Ball. Hmmm??? lol

#241 4 years ago

I’m think I inserted the balls incorrectly on that one... assuming there’s a sequence since it’s a multi-ball game???

#242 4 years ago

Does anyone know if the Gator Ball Collect is supposed to hold the ball at the end of a game?

#246 4 years ago

Finally. Thanks for all your help on this machine. I think I’ll have an easier time in the future.

#248 4 years ago

Persistence for sure... the next one will be twice as easy.

It was a fun thread to watch and learn from. Great persistence. Congrats!

I ended up replacing the Bonus Score Relay since it was jacked up and now the credit button won’t start a game. It pulls the credit relay, but not the In relay now and the Ball Release no longer will kick out a ball onto the playfield. Any ideas? Pulling my hair out. Solenoids work otherwise.

Thinking it’s score motor 1B???

When I manually activate the coin relay it starts a new game as it should. When I hit the credit button the Credit relay engages, but doesn’t pull the Coin Relay in to start a game like it had prior.

Quoted from rolf_martin_062:

Hi PinballGurus
I do not understand Your (post-249) "... but not the In relay now ..." --- please write it again in other words.
When a pin does not start I then do the following (test): I toggle-off the main power switch / unplug the main power cord - I plug-in and toggle-on - then I wear rubber gloves or use an wooden stick (attention, exercise care, electricity can kill poeple) - I manually (rubber gloves or wooden stick) activate the Coin-Relay - what happens ? Greetings Rolf

The credit relay holds in when I push the credit button doesn’t activate the Coin Relay. I’ll take a look at what you’ve highlighted.
