Quoted from AUKraut:

Yes, I know, licensed professional engineer in AL, power systems engineer for over 30 years. Nuclear plants do have cooling towers, but no smokestacks. There is no smoke generated from the nuclear fission reaction, hence no need for the tall smokestacks. Any smokestacks shown in a pic near a nuclear plant is from a co-located combustion turbine that provides site station service backup power when the nuclear plant is offline.
Here is a pic of Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro GA, showing units 1 & 2. This pic was taken before units 3 & 4 construction was started. You can see the two cooling towers in the rear, one for each reactor, with steam vapor leaving the top of the towers. No smokestacks....
[quoted image]

The nuclear plant depicted on his machine was built next to an older power plant that had smoke stacks. The state wouldn’t allow them to tear the stacks down because they were deemed historically significant. See, we got there!

Hillarious. Its just artwork on a pinball machine. And tonight I can tell you that this machine in fact had smoke coming out of it!

Agreed, 99% of people wouldn't notice or know the difference.....for me I'd change it, but that's due to my background and vocation, that's all. Still, she did do a great job overall!

Swapping coin door to electric panel today. I had to cut rails to work on Stern cabinet. Besides blowing things up, its coming along..
I ordered chrome back box supports from marcos. The spooky ones are too short for pivot hole.

Artwork and cabinet are done! I want to add lights to electrical panel, still pondering. Once I get it back to life i will get the horshoe and switch completed. But I am happy where its landed artisticaly!

That breaker panel coin door is cool. I wouldn't light it, it looks authentic as-is. I'd find some kind of nuclear warning sticker to put on there, or high voltage or something.

#209 2 years ago

Looks great, awesome work!

But is it just me, or are the Side Rails just screaming for an EL lighting mod, in say Green, or Purple? If not that, I would consider sitting something behind the letters so that it's all the same color so that they stand out more.

The boards you pictured above are PD-16, PD for power driver. https://www.multimorphic.com/store/circuit-boards/pd-16/ Hopefully this is what you smoked. You can get a replacement from multimorphic, set the dips and (provided nothing else is wrong) you will be back in business in a few minutes. The SW-16 is the switch detection board which is about half the size of the PD-16. I'm still not certain what you mean by smoking the CPU board. There is the little linux PC MOBO which most would consider the CPU. There is also the P3-ROC which is the "CPU" for tying together the switches, LEDs boards and power driver boards. This medium sized board has 4 blue LEDs that rotate in a pattern when it's operating. Whatever smoked, I hope you are back and running soon.

This is what smoked. Not the other boards. I emailed Mogan at spooky hoping I can get a replacement.

OUCH! I wonder how that happened exactly. I wonder if somehow the 48V power got onto the 12V rail. That would do it. Probably not an overly expensive board though. < $200 I should think. Would you mind posting the replacement cost? If +48V did run down the +12 it could also take out the SW-16s and the amplifier. Is the monitor OK? That is also on 12V I think.

The other boards are lit up and the go between board has the rotating leds in a circle. I hear the speakers when turned on make that on sound. Monitor not sure. It shows nothing. I have not even looked at it. The score leds scroll left to right like the boot up, it just never stops scrolling and all the lights, inserts and timer displays are locked on. Starting with cpu and one switch board and going from there. My fault, but my wife was standing right next to me talking to me. I should have left it until I was alone. I blew up a black knight when my son was 2 years old and I was putting in a new board and he was being a cranky boy that would not leave me alone. As a result I was one pin off on board. Booom. Bye bye black knight! You think I would learn to wait until I am by myself. If you spun a pinwheel next to me I would forget to do something.. i will post where this goes and costs.

Going forward it sort of raises the issues of repairs for these games.
This is a somewhat recent machine using a fairly obscure CPU running the game code. How much work would be required to get the code running on another platform if these were no longer available. I am sure the support from Scott would be fantastic but a lot of what ifs.

Good luck with the project, looks great.

Good point, maybe someone will come up with a solution to that in the future. To be fair I killed it. Out of respect I will never bother Scott with this project.

Why not? JK JK.
OK, here is what you need to do. You will need to contact Spooky and have them sell you a new UP Board with the TNA image on it. Once you get that, be sure to run a code update. Just make sure you do not accidentally swap the LCD and the PC power cables.

Also test before powering up the new PC that no voltages are crossed anywhere in the machine. PC should be 5vdc, LCD should be 12vdc. You can test these voltages at the rail on the power distribution board in the back of the machine to be sure everything is happy.

Morgan is going to program and send me a new one. Spooky’s customer service is excellent and they really are a good company. I hope they continue to grow and hammer out games.
And thank you Sir. I will check everything prior to powering it up. Those wires are labelled!

Might have killed monitor, but game does not boot up? Spooky said cpu was programmed, but going to try updating code... i have proper voltages at monitor and cpu..

Nope. I guess I have more problems to figure out.

#221 2 years ago

What is it doing on startup? Is the monitor saying anything like "No Signal"? Is the little green/Red LED on the back of the monitor doing anything on startup?
--Scott

#222 2 years ago

Nothing on monitor. I do not see any status lights on it either. Display is blank and nothing comes on screen. All the lights in backbox look correct. I do have voltage at the monitor and cpu. Turn on machine the score displays go left to right like boot up, but they never stop and it does not boot up. I downloaded updated code from your site, put flash drive in and left it on for a while and its still dead? I had smoke come out of cpu when it popped. In short, I done fffed it up!

#223 2 years ago

Sounds to me like the monitor is not getting power. Can you test that the DC barrel plug is giving 12v to the monitor?

It is showing 12 volts at the monitor plug snd 5 volts at cpu. I have been making wireforms all day and now into midnight, so I have not gone crazy looking it over. The voltages are there. So......

Yeah, seems the LCD controller and/or LCD screen is messed up. If the controller is bad, no big deal, you can send me a message at [email protected] and I can throw one on the site for you that is flashed with the proper firmware.

I will. Dumb question would the game boot up blind? Meaning, I leave the machine on and everything just stays on. No attract lights, just all lights (inserts) just stay on they never cycle and the timer always stays at 99 with the lights. It never reaches a booted game. I am still learning this system so sorry if these are dumb questions. But, if you turned on a stern with no dmd plugged in it still would get to attract mode.

#227 2 years ago

Heres it turned on. It never gets further than this.

#228 2 years ago

Yeah, it will not boot blind. Also, you have a couple dead LEDs. Everything shoudl be white on startup, not pink or teal. Yeah, that board on the back of the LCD seems to be dead.

I sent you an email at pinball life. Thanks for jumping in with the help. I would never have bothered you with this. I let the smoke out of it! The leds are you saying the ones in backbox should be white ? Not sure how to read that last post.

#230 2 years ago

Not a problem. Some of your playfield LEDs are not working right as they should be white upon boot up. You can see your pop, a GI, and an insert light are not white. You should replace these.

Here are the parts:

GI LED: https://www.pinballlife.com/p3-roc-single-rgb-gi-pcb-assembly.html

I replaced the board that blew fuse, cpu and monitor board. Less than $300 for everything. The cpu might have survived. I had backglass out, but monitor upright. Smoke was in back right corner. Assumed cpu due to that location, but might have just blown the monitor board. I will keep the old ones, but they are going in a box! Not back in to see if they work.

Tna cabinet shooter rod mount hole bottom is 3.5 inches. Stern is 3 inches. I reshaped the brackets to adjust playfield height. I have the shooter aligned now, but I have to cut the apron. Below the painter tape is going bye bye!

I am super busy making wireforms for mando and this and my poor star trek are on backburners.. way back..

Got it chopped down and it fits perfect!

Starting new horse shoe. I moved opto to be in the center of clear transition ramp. The sensor works through the plastic, the sensor is now fully protected from the ball. These are mock up transitions. Really need starting point for new wireform shaping. Also removed rubber posts for space. I have an idea on those that I will post when I get there.

cool project, well done

one thing to consider , which you probably already have is to protect the starting vertical sides of your ramp - typical post and stainless guard bracket. Would it pay to move the ramps entrances back and use the existing holes to create a more protected entry

I started a business making wireforms and I have been very busy making sets. Currently doing Mando, jjp gnr, bk2000 and picking up a gaurdians of the galaxy tomorrow to make wireforms for that as well. As a result the tna has been sitting unplayed. Today I put the stand up targets back in, took off the horsehoe ramp and cut new plastics to replace the ones I cut up. All just so that I could play it! Its been a while since I had it together enough to play a game. I am going to try and order new plastics on Monday. The game is just amazing as is. The sound is by far the best in pinball. I will finish up the cosmetics when I can. I would love to move the display under upper playfield and put it in the back panel cut out. Not sure if I can, but I think that would look great up there... we will see.

Bump

#244 2 years ago

I will take the bump as a sign to put out a feelers post if anyone would be interested in buying or trading for this game. I dont need to move it, but I am leaning heavily towards doing that at the moment.

I am waiting on a new set of plastics to replace the ones I cut up. I am seriously considering selling the game. I have a complete set of decals, extra boards and original cabinet to go with it. I will put coin door back on and finish up back panel on playfield prior to letting it go. I would really be into a trade with a machine that can benefit from metal wireforms over plastic ramps. Tron would be top choice. I had it twice, but I was not making wireforms at that time.

can I ask the change of mind in not completing this

Sure, I enjoyed creating the artwork and cabinet swap alot. The horseshoe wireform made the game unique for me. I had a working wireform with plastic transition ramps. I tried to make better transition ramps and failed a few times. I gave up and just put the game back together as it was out of frustration. Its been sitting ever since. No other reason. The only thing left to make is the rear panel. I removed the wireform and have new plastics coming from spooky.

thanks for sharing and I totally understand the frustration and wanting to park it.

I am sure someone would buy it from you as in a modern cabinet someone could add a world under glass with reactors etc, could be very cool.

all the best with it.

Put stock coin door back on and moved the game out to the main pinball room. Picking up strobe light this week. I am on the fence on keeping it. But either way I need to complete it. Backpanel I am redoing. I saw a graphic equalizer display that would look very good. It just will take a bit to get the one I saw as they ran out. Its a visual graphic eq. I think the pulsing audio being displayed would go with it. This is still the best audio game I have seen.

I think you would need two of the equalizer displays. It’s only 7” long. Left and right channel?

Depends on how this reactor mod comes out.
