Honestly, I’m a little shocked that I’m the first one out there to have done this.
As a absolutely hard-core turtle fan I know that the door on the side of the turtle party wagon should be orange. The artist on the game got it right on the back glass and side art, but unfortunately we got a yellow door on the playfield toy.
And maybe that’s not a big deal to most people. After all it does look fine.
But to me getting that door orange was important, this is how it appeared in the original animated series, and this is how it appeared on the iconic playmates toy that many of us might’ve had as children.
So of course I decided I would paint my door orange.
The turtle van on the premium and limited version of the game is a mechanical feature, and there is a linkage for the door that goes below the playfield. Completely disassembling this is totally possible but may introduce other complications so I opted to not do that.
Using Tamiya modeling masking tape, I carefully masked off all four edges of the turtle van, and then using Tamiya R-6 acrylic model paint, I carefully painted the entire door with a model brush. I had plenty of extra paper towels down to ensure that there would be no leaks or splashes, but using such a tiny brush there wasn’t any issue at all other than it being so tedious.
After the first coat I was already pretty happy but just to be sure I put on an additional two coats. I also let them dry for 18 hours and I’m going to wait another day or so before actually playing the game.
The paint has already hardened and cured. It looks great.
If the van was completely disassembled and the door was removed from the mechanical assembly, someone with more skill could get an even smoother paint job with something like a modeling airbrush kit, but I’m completely satisfied with this end result.
It just didn’t feel quite right for me with the door not being orange.
