Hello Everyone! I recently purchased my second pin (tmnt Data East) and was wondering if anyone has any tips regarding playfield upkeep. After close inspection of my new addition, it appears the playfield has some kind of transparent protector. It doesn't cover the entire playfield but seems to be doing a good job. Does anyone have any information on what care/maintenance would be required for this protective layer? I'm going to try and post some close-up pics to give a better idea. I recently replaced the spinning pizza logo because the previous owner decided to slap his new one directly on the original faded pizza. That was a good 45 minutes of peeling and goo gone. Also looking to replace the original ball shooter coil with a more powerful one, but that will be for a future post.

Thanks in advance to any feedback!

the word you're looking for is mylar.

Hello and welcome! As lordloss has mentioned, that clear protector is mylar. It's found on tons of games, especially ones made in the mid 80s.

Since your game has a mylar protector, you'll want to stay away from any cleansers that contain petroleum distillates--as they soften the glue beneath the mylar around the edges, and may cause it to peel. I've personally moved to using straight Naphtha from the hardware store for most cleaning. It's cheap, accessible, and very gentle. I use straight Mother's non cleaner carnauba wax to keep things protected. Most people use Novus products around here, and they're fine, but Novus 2 is abrasive (but it'll really buff up mylar well), and not recommended anymore for routine cleaning. Avoid Novus 3. It's not something I generally think many people use.

Here are a few resources to get you started. They'll be your bible.

Mylar, yes! I wasn't too sure. This gives me plenty of direction. I'll make sure not to use simple green or any novus products unless they are proven to work well on mylar. I've heard much when it comes to naphtha and carnauba wax. Also, I'll chuck the millwax since it contains petrolium distillates. As for the uncovered areas surrounding the mylar, I'll continue researching. Thanks for the extremely fast responses!

It sounds like you've done some of your homework on what to use and more importantly what not to use. Just keep it somewhat clean and don't forget to play it often! Think about it, that game has been played and used for 25 years and much of that was in a commercial environment. It will be just fine at home. Mylar has saved the playfield of many games.

A dry lint free cloth and maybe novus 1 are your friends.
