Pete, I like Pinside for the down vote! Our Aussie ones really need this some time, wouldn't you agree?
Not every kid can win a trophy Dude. You got a down vote for this thread mate. Oh and also for the country v country thing, utter bullshit.

But, there is now a push to make Pinside a more friendly place
Be nice to the (unpaid) moderators
    No boobie pictures
    Try to keep on topic
    This is all great
To keep in line with this new push for niceness, surely we can do away with down voting?
Keep the up voting , as it sends a positive message
But people do use down votes to poke the user, not the post
I cannot see a need for this

    And we shouldn't keep score
And everyone should get a trophy
    And

I hope this was a troll thread just to collect to down votes

Okay...a couple people didn't understand this. I'll say it slowly: Downvote. The. OP.

I only down vote when some one says something douchey.

    TERMINATOR DOWN

    #69 4 years ago
    Quoted from swinks:

I can understand both sides of the issue, maybe if the up / down vote feature remained - an idea is the person giving the up or down votes has a counter on their profile so if they end being a serial downvoter they are highlighted. So when you open the counter to see who is downvoting their little picture has a red ring around it ???. It might make them more accountable for being a serial downvoter.
as for what makes a serial downvoter: maybe a person that down votes more than up votes, or downvotes more than makes posts (contribution to the forum) or a combination of the 2. Might help mods quickly identify trouble makers.
    ready for the downvotes

So down voting rather than replying is a troublemaker? It's easy to just disagree and click, that makes you less of a trouble maker than actually staying a disagreement here which is basically not allowed.

    #70 4 years ago

It IS weird when the downvote battles happen though, right?

You know...when you're in a thread and two people who aren't even talking about the same thing start randomly downvoting each other, then you're confused about whether or not you missed something, then later on you find out that they had a disagreement in another thread about a completely different subject.

no I support the up and down vote, but sometimes it is better to state your approval or disapproval otherwise the forum would be a boring place if all we did is up or down voted the opening post on every thread. For me when I do a design I use the up votes as a indicator of what people think of a design or idea. Like the down vote as well but in the situation of say a proposed design I would prefer the person to state what they didn't like about a design so I can improve on it. But some people down vote because they don't like a game - and therefore not the mod etc.

Seems to me that a lot of the conversation about this is in the irreconcilable perceptions of what the upvoting and downvoting means.

    1) some people says it's a comment about the message
    2) some people says it's a comment about the messenger

I think that is assisted largely because the caret symbols: ^ and V are not words.

Look what else the symbols do. They connote up and down, and so we call them upvoting and downvoting, which further connotes the thumbs-up and thumbs-down judgments which in ancient Rome meant one is good, one is bad.

Disagreement does not have to denote anything bad. Disagreement is not automatically bad. Disagreement is not bad. So why employ symbolism that encourages these tired associations and the useless product of them?

Ditch the ambiguous carets and their front-loaded judgments and replace them with the words Agree and Disagree. Less ambiguity and no further promotion of the association with thumbs-down negativity. Then, with that done, stop fretting about exactly what it is that the person Agrees or Disagrees with.

Or, don't try this idea and continue with what you have.

I gotta say this is a entertaining thread.

I can unequivocally tell you that when RobT and Rarehero downvote me they're saying rather clearly: "We think you're a douchebag."

And you know what? They may be on to something.

I agree with getting rid of the thumbs down. Perpetuates negativity, promotes nothing, gets abused by a few ( you know who you are!).

But no boobie pics? Let's not get hasty.

How about a new rule. We ban members based upon the number of thumbs downs they receive.

Well, then the OP got me started by downvoting my fecal sentiment above. I don't know how you downvote poop. At my age, every time I successfully drop some friends off at the lake, it's strictly two thumbs up from me.

    #97 4 years ago

The real world consists of thumbs ups and thumbs downs, wins and losses, and winners and losers. Deal with it.

good discussion but let's not flog it. keep the downvote and no slagging our homelands.

    Down vot away...lol!,,

I have been reading this thread with much amusement. It is hard to look away.

The original plea for no downvotes has created an avalanche of them.

So I wonder, at what point the voting changed from disagreement with the post, to poking Pete!!

    Just funny.
