Got some LEDs in the mail and I’ll be giving the Exit Chamber some attention. Since it’s so dark on that side I’m going to use 6 natural white post lights and smash them with the Red Finned posts.

All the other posts in the game will be brand new Blue Finned posts from PBR. (Except the Kmiec post )

Still need to dial in the arrangement to tastefully hide the wiring but you get the point.

I also got a frosted blue light strip to adhere under the ramp. I love how perfect the hallow is. Trying to not go clown puke here, I want the light to just be enough to light the under side and not cast out on to the PF too much.

This residue on the apron is driving me nuts. I want to make water slides and repaint it but I’m not skilled enough so I tried making other designs that look like crap.
Just going to need to buy a new apron. It should be illegal for operators to put stickers on aprons.

Vid you’re a god send man. This needs to be the smallest “Vids guide” ever. How remove operator sticker residue from an apron

Worked like magic and didn’t ruin the paint which is mind bending because a single drop of water will make the paint wash off like nothing.

WD40 sucks as a lubricant, but it's great at removing decal adhesive and getting chewing-gum out of pubic hair

Been kind of stagnant waiting for inserts. Decided to finish my repo of my first guitar I got for $50 in 1998. Old Kramer that needed a new neck. Anyway redid it over the summer and never got back to finishing it.
Original with the bad neck

Got some inserts in the mail. I have a secret Santa sending me some blue and yellow transparent inserts and I have a few clear inserts coming from PBR.

I threw the teal in there to see if it would work in case my blue fall through.

Getting closer to being able to lay this hardtop down.

I was wondering if you started another hardtop project. I just stumbled on this thread. Looking good my man!

I commend your effort going the extra mile to replace all those inserts. Looks like a lot of frustration, but it will be worth it every time you look at the game. This one will come out looking even better than the Mata Hari.

Also nice to see Vid back adding helpful tips!

Yeah the inserts have me dead in the water. I decided to finish up that alternative plastic with water slide decals.

I did the traditional process
Printed the image reverse on a clear decal. Sealed it in some clear and laid it on the back of the plastic

BD2DA21D-5E03-4C1D-A99D-922BB6874E92 (resized).jpegBD2DA21D-5E03-4C1D-A99D-922BB6874E92 (resized).jpeg

Then made a reversed silhouette of the image on the white. Now I did not clear coat the white because there wasn’t any ink. What a mess... apparently I needed to because the glue seemed to seep through to the outside. For a moment I thought I put it on wrong after I started trying to squeegee the water out and it was a gummy mess.

Another day going by without inserts in the mail so I decided to tackle another thing on the list.
I wanted to create coin plates so I altered some art I found online and created some designs in Word.
Printed them out on photo paper. I think they look pretty cool.

101A7116-14FA-44BF-AB1A-06730B3BB633 (resized).jpeg101A7116-14FA-44BF-AB1A-06730B3BB633 (resized).jpeg4984B306-F669-4F24-8606-B1A3CBF27383 (resized).jpeg4984B306-F669-4F24-8606-B1A3CBF27383 (resized).jpeg

But...... I don’t like how the light shines through the black.

Since I printed 2 sets I decided to exacto knife out the art and text to make a mask.

This piece will go behind the visible art. F36EBAA5-5A8B-4946-8B79-476C3ADA8873 (resized).jpegF36EBAA5-5A8B-4946-8B79-476C3ADA8873 (resized).jpeg

Then I made some new blank shields out of some extra plastic I had from another project.

Yeah it’s been good to me the last 20 years. Been on a lot of stages. I actually just sold this 4 12s Fender cab yesterday to a little local instruments store. The guy and I talked about how the big rigs are a thing of the past and everyone wants to go small now.
Pendulum swings. In another 15 years big amps might be desired again.

Figured I might as well get the shooter lane and the apron area clear coated.
Got everything masked off

Not happy about the shooter lane. The clear didn’t take.
Looks good from the players point of view

but you can tell where the clear chased away in different positions.

Not sure how or if I’ll address this. They say the enemy of good is better. I HATE clear coating or spray painting and it’s a pain in the ass to set up to paint and heat during the winter anyway.

#80 3 years ago

When it comes to clearing, you cant set your expectations too high without having all of the equipment and space it takes to do a pro finish. It would be silly to dedicate the space and money needed to do one pf..

my point is, or my opinion is function should be the focus in this realm. Will it do its job the way you want it to and for the time you expect of it?

#81 3 years ago

I decided to mask the lane right where the grain changes and sand it down.

D5173DE6-E608-45E8-91B8-093251A1D779 (resized).jpegD5173DE6-E608-45E8-91B8-093251A1D779 (resized).jpeg

Initially my thought was to just sand it off and try again outside.
I really wished I could just spray some clear in a cup and just brush the clear on instead of the whole production of spraying.
Then it hit me, I have 2 part left over from my Firepower playfield I cleared over the summer!

B07A14A8-88FD-490D-A9A2-897D66135AE6 (resized).jpegB07A14A8-88FD-490D-A9A2-897D66135AE6 (resized).jpeg

So I did just that, applied clear by hand to the lane. Brushed it out super thin, set a timer for 10 minutes and kept adding layers until I got it looking like the sprayed clear that surrounds it.

Now in a day or 2 I’ll level it with some high grit sand paper and polish it out.6D67815D-0D09-4AF9-AF60-9FA19934D720 (resized).jpeg6D67815D-0D09-4AF9-AF60-9FA19934D720 (resized).jpeg85326C67-BF86-4FF7-B779-D0CEC9869524 (resized).jpeg85326C67-BF86-4FF7-B779-D0CEC9869524 (resized).jpeg9EC377F6-F838-4C22-863D-710F0701B7FE (resized).jpeg9EC377F6-F838-4C22-863D-710F0701B7FE (resized).jpeg

That came out much better!
Nothing better than having the materials on hand. To me its like they are free because in my mind, I all ready paid for it with that last task.

#83 3 years ago

I can’t stand the rats nest of a wire harness this cabinet has so I’m separating the harness and I’ll be using blue tubing to run new routes.
Little ahead of myself because I’ll be cleaning the harness and completely tearing this cab down and repainting but this gives you an idea of what I’m thinking.
Did the same with my Firepower.

I remembered in the middle of the night last night, that the 2 part clears are not made to soak in to the wood. They grab on and cure on top. Because of this, I use 2 coats of poly on the back rather than just spraying my clear, because I want it to sink in and seal it.

So I didnt know if you knew that, and if not, it is something to keep in mind. I learn every single job. If I didnt it would be the same as working at an assembly plant or subway.

So bored waiting on inserts so I decided to design some apron cards.
Wanted to give the impression of being inside of either left or right tube from the back glass.
Also ended up getting a replacement apron. Felt a new one would look better with the hardtop and everything else I’ll be doing.

Well done on that shooter lane.

Now I can't recall specifically, but didn't we both use the Minwax wipe-on polyurethane for the shoot lane areas on our Mati Hari projects? I can't remember who I got the idea from, but I'm still very satisfied how multiple coats of that stuff has been protecting my shooter lane & saucer so far.

I'm just curious why you didn't use that brush-on Auto Urethane in the first place. Spraying clear seems like a lot of extra work when you're eventually just putting a hardtop on.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

I set up the "paint booth" in the garage as a test to see if I could get the garage warm enough to spray in temps below 30. The shooter lane and apron area were my test subjects because it was such a small area. 3 or 4 quick passes a few minutes apart and done.
My plan was set up the paint tent and heat the area and spend an hour spraying what I needed and be done so I can see how it would work when I try to spray for the head and the cabinet.
If that shooter lane would've taken the paint it would've been an easy task. But only 1 out of 10 things go how I want them to during my projects. As for brushing on the 2-part clear I don't think it would look as good on large flat areas. I think i only got away with it because it was just shooter lane groove.

In about 20 years when my inserts get delivered I'll be able to finish the play field then Im going to restore the coin door.
After that, will be the head if I decide to try and spray during the winter, which is a major pain. If that doesn't work out then this project will be curbed until the late spring.

But thats the plan:
Playfield
Coin door
Backbox
Cabinet

Everyday that I can’t finish this playfield i just stare at the machine thinking about what I want to do.
So here’s another thing to keep productivity going:

Made a decal for the platform that the volume knob and test button sit on.

When I make decals like this I put Mylar over the top and double sided adhesive on the bottom

Got it cut out

God I can’t wait to finish this thing...
I don’t care if it works or not I just want to look at it

Took a stab at making a replacement manufacturer’s certificate
The original would be fine after stapling it back in when I’m finished with the cab but this new one on the right looks pretty good.

You can only replace that part if you store the original in a manilla folder somewhere.

That's history baby.

Original. You could always put a different color LED under them if you wanted to change it up later.

Well the rubber finally hits the road on this playfield!

Got my inserts today from my secret contact. There should be a movie made about obtaining 3/4” Blue and Yellow translucent inserts. The secrets, the lies, the greed, the deception, the sex, it all was almost too much.
But I got them!!!

I also needed to get rid of one of the yellow arrows so I moved two of the originals together and installed the new over by the right out lane

After tons of sanding and some epoxy work this baby is ready for the hardtop.313B866A-98EF-4A38-9EF3-30861EA73D94 (resized).jpeg313B866A-98EF-4A38-9EF3-30861EA73D94 (resized).jpeg

After I get it lined up how I want, double check to make sure all the windows are free of debris, I go throw up, pace around then double check it, pace around then triple check and the finally say F it I’m doing it!

What I do is like a moron hold the exposed adhesive up and fumble around for my phone to capture this process.....peel the top down about half way and cut the excess off and fold it down to tuck it under.

After I lay the top I pull the bottom up and slowly peel the rest of the paper of and roll rest of the hardtop down

Quoted from vid1900:

WD40 sucks as a lubricant, but it's great at removing decal adhesive and getting chewing-gum out of pubic hair

Commendable progress. Stay with it. Still puzzled tho by vid1900's advice to use WD40 to remove chewing gum from pubic hair. That happened to a girlfriend many years ago, and she just shaved that whole area nice and smooth. Much cleaner, safer and easier.

One thing I liked about my Mata Hari hardtop is the “V” cut in the plastic in the shooter lane was lined right up to the groove.
So the ball never actually touches the wood of the lane. It hovers about a millimeter above the wood.

E1DDC1BA-D51F-44FF-BE24-46C3B389702D (resized).jpegE1DDC1BA-D51F-44FF-BE24-46C3B389702D (resized).jpeg

This hardtop is cut differently and the full lane is exposed until the top by the arch.

This lane takes a beating and as the “pinball whisperers” thread would basically say. Pay attention to what your game tells you.

4368D547-14CC-4C04-8FE8-07F10F1556FB (resized).jpeg4368D547-14CC-4C04-8FE8-07F10F1556FB (resized).jpeg

So I decided to make a lane protector out of plastic. The thing that sucks is I needed to cut out some of the hardtop to make room so I took a straight edge and an exactoknife removed what I needed.

Now the new plastics keep the ball from hitting the wood.
