This thing is FILTHY!!! It has some nasty wear at the magnet, the trap door decal is destroyed, the file cabinet is rough and the battery holder is toast. But, it works! The cab is in descent shape, plastics are filthy, but seemingly good. In a few weeks it will get stripped, assessed and fixed back up.

I had to throw some sticky foam padding up in there to help calm it down, it only does it 1 out of 100x now instead of 1 out of 10 or less. It should also help protect the welds & shape of the metal guide it launches out of from the VUK.

Same, put in some sticky foam inside the vuk on the inner topside
Quoted from Exgametrader:Check the welds on the top of that Vuk if they break will let the ball launch over the ramp
My welds were broken. It’s crazy how the slight lift can cause the ball to fly off that far! In the meantime the foam tape is a great solution until I can tear it out to get it tacked up on the welder.

Chad, I appreciate this, your TFTC code has been very good to me. I have been playing The X-Files extra heavy as of late, in case I can answer any questions or contribute in any way.

I am excited to start working on this. Unfortunately, I don't have the game in my house yet. Hopefully I will get it soon. Until then, I can't proceed with the update. I'll let you all know when I get it and can get started.
I love this game but I was beginning to consider selling it to get another wishlist game ... but with new Chad code coming, I'm holding onto it!
Hey fellow X-Files owners ... I've been having a ton of fun making these new products, and since I own this game, naturally I had to make this one too...
There are plain old original stock coin reject buttons ... then there are aftermarket coin reject buttons with flat 2-D patterns -- I'm taking it to the next dimension with these new 3-D Coin Reject Buttons!
These eye-catching buttons literally pop out at you! They're 3D-printed with multiple filaments, including a translucent base color of your choice and a creepy gray alien protruding from the button face! The eyes are colored with black ink to give it a more lifelike appearance. Honestly, I'm thrilled with how this one turned out! Spooky Mulder would be proud.
I immediately thought to print these in green, to match up with the green in the game ... but I really think yellow will look great too, since there's a lot of yellow on the front face of the cabinet. I'll post some pictures of the yellow version after I print some.
Available on my website (https://rocketcitypinball.com) or in my shop here on Pinside (https://pinside.com/pinball/market/shops/1282-rocket-city-pinball/04870-3d-coin-reject-buttons-x-files). (My daughter gets a commission too; these 3D buttons were her idea!)
Installation instructions video coming soon, but this button type is ridiculously easy ... two screws and the bezel comes loose so you can swap out the button.
Simple as that! Note: please check your game before ordering -- this button replaces button type 891-1113-01; reimports, modded/swapped coin doors, etc. may have different button types. Compare to my pictures to be sure this is the correct one for yours.

You can come over and vacation with mine
One of the best things IMHO that could be done to this table's rules.. is add the ability to stack modes! If you could run a mode while the Multiball was going, the scoring would be off the wall!
I just added X-files to my collection but looking to replace the start button with a clear button to get it illuminated.
Anyone recommendations?
I have a wanted post in the market for this game. Despite its issues, X Files is just too nostalgic for me to pass up. Hope to acquire one soon.

We just added a comet LED to the existing start button
3A4F9963-BA98-496A-806F-D233B0431AB4 (resized).jpegI really loved playing this at my local pinball. 2 ball, 3 ball and 4 ball modes. The 2 ball is from one of the timed games, the other 2 multiball modes are fairly easy to get. A lot going on with the playfield, great music and overall creepy x-files theme. I am not a diehard xfiles fan, but I did enjoy the show when it was on.
I ended up recently buying, kids love it, lots of fun and a lot of potential if you like modding. I picked up some of the McFarlane toys for the playfield, LEDs were added, translucent and glow in the dark rubber rings...etc.
I also had trouble with the VUK and "fixed" with some clear cut plexiglass creating a tube for the ball to flow through in that portion of the ramp. I had a pinball repair person look at fixing, but he could not figure it out. Next time I will mention the guide rail or see if I can solder myself, but for now it is working fantastic.

Welcome to the club! I love this game and all those mini-modes. The 2-ball mode (Syzygy) isn't timed (that I know of), it runs as long as both the balls are still on the table. Either that or I've never lasted long enough to time out, lol

Any update on this as a more balanced scoring and bonus would be amazing....

Unfortunately, no. I still do not have the game in my possession. Once I get it, I'll be able to hit the ground running as I have already reverse engineered the code.

Hi there. Which translucent button did you use for start button?
Thanks

Amazing!!! Looking forward to what you come up with....

I ordered a new NOS yellow start button and just threaded a comet LED inside. I can take a picture if you want.

Lol yeah, seems like every time I get one of the mini modes going I immediately lose the ball.
Included a pic of how I dealt with the VUK. Once I get more familiar with working on these machines I will give it another shot, but for now this works 100% of the time and nobody that plays over at my home knows any different but me.

There are no ready to go, drop in Speaker Light Kits for Sega Showcase cabinet games as far as I have seen. I do have light kits that will work, but they should be considered DIY. You will need to do some rivet drilling if your game doesn't already have the 2nd backbox speaker added. You will also probably want to add the second speaker or do some creative things on them to make both sides look the same, as having a lit speaker on one side and lit piece of cardboard on the other would look pretty bad in my opinion.
I also think you may have to be a bit selective on the speakers you use with my light kits, though, I think you would be fine with almost anything as long as they didn't have spacer rings attached to the front of them.
So if you are up to Doing It Yourself....I do have light kits that would work along with all of the hardware that would be needed for a X-Files install. Just contact me via the e-mail that is listed on my website.

Quoted from KenEberhardt:Anyone with X-Files pinsound experience, is it worth it?
You can just add a powered subwoofer and be done with it, it will sound awesome with that alone.
I think pinsound would be overkill unless you're willing to install the audio component modifications to the board which are needed to add the second high range speaker and channel Sega omitted so you have a pair instead of just one.
Plus some people seem to have issues with the existing X-Files audio being grainy or distorted at times, mostly the call outs I believe - so that could become worse or more noticeable. I never noticed an issue with the sounds on mine but the subwoofer really made the game come alive with all the great tracks it has for the various modes.
Hope this isn’t inappropriate, but I just wanted to say that despite Sega Showcases reputation, I still love this pin and want one!
I have a wanted market post listed. Hopefully one day.
Friends,
I'm desperate for some reference photos of the inside of the backbox, specifically the door locks and how the DMD is fitted.
Quoted from MG7322:Any way to adjust the auto ball plunge? The ball will fire right over the ramp and drain or fly back into the shooter lane. Random as well meaning it will work 80% of the time then throw a doozie.[quoted image]
Starting a playfield swap with an NOS clear coated replacement. The weld is cracked on my auto ball plunge VUK causing the crazy air balls even with some foam tape at the upper lip. Going to send this to Mantis to study my broken weld VUK to see if he can come up with a solution. Making no promises but maybe a future replacement part can be a possibility.

I would be in.
X-files replacement VUK is here. Will install and give some feedback. So far it looks top shell for welds and precision. Should I paint black or just clear coat it?
Anyone else I interested? I did the foam tape on my old one but was still hit or miss. Also was thinking to get the old one welded too but then we have to grid and paint the repair.
Thinking this is an upgrade to a critical component on X for repeatable game play.

Here is the link for this scoop to all who are interested!
Please would someone take a voltage reading for me? Between fuse F21 and GND. The manual says 50V DC, I'm getting 77V on mine and wonder whether that sounds too high.

Awesome! Ordered!
Quoted from supermoot:Awesome! Ordered!
Great news! I decided to have it powder coated black. Will post when completed.
Noticed today on my playfield swap that the “X” inserts on my replacement are clear and not green. Also the upper left flash inset is red and not clear. Wondering if most are green inserts and I have a early or late run playfield. Also Jackpots and extra ball are clear as well vs. red. Just curious….
A8446ED4-EC9E-4358-98C4-675FED6B9545 (resized).jpegNice observation! I never realized there may be variations with the inserts on these playfields but it will be interesting to see if anyone in the know can shed more light on it.
Hi all,
I have this machine coming my way sometime in the next couple weeks.
My parents (who live in Connecticut) acquired it back in the late 90s, right before I went off to college, so I wasn't able to play it much except on the occasional holiday. For the most part, it's sat untouched in their basement since then. I bought a house last October (in California), and my parents said I could have the machine. It's being picked up this week and shipped out, many thanks already to the knowledgeable folks here on pinside.com. Very excited to have my first pinball machine... hopefully the first of many (or at least a few )!
Being my first pinball machine, I do have some beginner questions. Some are related to this machine in particular, which I'm hoping you folks might have pointers on.
- When it's delivered, what should I pay attention to? Apart from smashed glass or bent legs, I'm not sure there's anything I'd be able to fault the shipping company for given the age of the machine and the fact it hasn't been turned on in decades.
- Since the machine has been mostly dormant for 20+ years, what things should I check after powering on? I downloaded the service manual, but it's Greek to me at this point.
- My garage has a slight downwards slope from back to front, and as a result I'll have to make sure it's leveled properly. Any preferred ways of shimming the legs, or is there enough give in the adjustable feet? I think the difference in height would be less than 1/2" between the two sides.
- I saw in the manual, I think, that the playfield should be a 6.5 degree slope. How does one measure this accurately?
- Some people have noted that having games in the garage is problematic. I live in South SF Bay Area (San Jose, specificially) where the temperature stays pretty constant in my garage, and the humidity is about 50% year-round. Let me know if you think it'd be OK.
The X-Files was one of my favorite shows when it was on, and I still have fond memories of this machine. Hopefully it lives up to the nostalgia. Even if it doesn't, you can't beat the low price of FREE (plus shipping)!
Thanks in advance for any advice!
