    Quoted from gdonovan:

    CNN is lying?

Seriously, I find it completely ridiculous and mind blowing that anyone, "anyone" would, or could even entertain they may be getting truth from these sources, it's absolutely laughable.

Those two sources were chosen for a particular reason.

Glorified mouse sends information to Google Analytics.
"Some of the events that Wacom were recording were arguably within their purview, such as “driver started” and “driver shutdown”. I still don’t want them to take this information because there’s nothing in it for me, but their attempt to do so feels broadly justifiable. What requires more explanation is why Wacom think it’s acceptable to record every time I open a new application, including the time, a string that presumably uniquely identifies me, and the application’s name."

    It's called metrics.

Use is so you can understand how your customers use the product. Know which features get used, know how they use it, etc.

The guy behind that post is a tool. Nearly everything he raises concerns about are
    1) pretty standard in opt in analystics
    2) Addressed by the actual privacy doc he lists
    3) is anonymized

And on top of that the entire thing is opt-in.

He tried to build some case that it's obscure and excessive. Yet his own data refutes it. He writes some multi page thing about his grand effort to snoop the traffics that most competent people would have explained in about four sentences because it's all run of the mill stuff.

Just another example of "hyperbolic, distorted crap you find on the internet"

People would have shit their pants if they knew what aol had back in the day... before opt in and privacy policies were really a thing too...

Its a glorified mouse; Google (who isn't even the vendor of the product!) has no need to know what I'm running, when I'm running it, etc.

Just "industry standard" and ok because you clicked on the terms of service is a poor excuse for needless snooping.

Luckily for the Times only half of the country lives in bizzaro world, so they're still able to sell a few papers. But since we're not going to convince each other of any of that, why don't we all just maintain focus on porch pirates, the surveillance state, and contrails?

I honestly can't name a news station/paper I'd have much trust in today. Sensationalism is the rule of the day, not real news.

This just illustrates your ignorance of the topic.

Google isn't the the getting and using the data! Google is the provider of the ***service*** Wacom is using to collect their analytics. Google provides a infrastructure and toolset to enable developers to do this without re-inventing the wheel everytime.

Just like Amazon created a cloud platform so people could host websites and services without having to build their own... just because your traffic goes to an Amazon IP it doesn't mean Amazon is the one using (or can even see) the traffic.

    Quoted from gdonovan:

Just "industry standard" and ok because you clicked on the terms of service is a poor excuse for needless snooping.

NO - that's not what happened here... if you bothered to read the story and comprehend it, you'd see the guy agreed to the OPTIONAL 'send data back to wacom' as a customer feature... Not simple 'terms of service'

That's why this whole piece is a snow job. It's "hey, look they're getting your data!!!" while pointing out in a much lower voice "so I agreed to send my data to wacom..."

And you honestly believe Google is not taking advantage of this datastream?

Again based on Google's track record they are entirely mercenary with your personal data, why do you trust them so?

I have a bridge to sell you if you think they are innocent. Why on earth does a mouse pad have need for Google Analytics?

Because it's advanced software - not a 'mouse pad'. How do you know how many users of linux you have vs windows vs mac? How do you know if people are upgrading or not? How do you know when people using the tool or not? This and many more questions is why people use metrics.

The same reasons websites track where people are from when visiting their site... what clicks they do.. what browser they use... how long they stay on pages, what processes they abort, etc etc. It's about understanding your user's response to things you do and their traits to improve what you do.

Watch out... by reading this post you are being tracked. Tracked by pinside... and tracked by the evil google-analytics.

Why on earth would a PINBALL website need Google Analytics?

Google analytics is used to track website activity such as session duration, pages per session, bounce rate etc. of individuals using the site, along with the information on the source of the traffic. It can be integrated with Google Ads, with which users can create and review online campaigns by tracking landing page quality and conversions (goals). Goals might include sales, lead generation, viewing a specific page, or downloading a particular file. Google Analytics' approach is to show high-level, dashboard-type data for the casual user, and more in-depth data further into the report set. Google Analytics analysis can identify poorly performing pages with techniques such as funnel visualization, where visitors came from (referrers), how long they stayed on the website and their geographical position. It also provides more advanced features, including custom visitor segmentation.[Google Analytics e-commerce reporting can track sales activity and performance. The e-commerce reports shows a site's transactions, revenue, and many other commerce-related metrics.

    Quoted from c508:

I can't wait until ADT goes bankrupt
They will probably be fine as far as the commercial market goes, but there are multiple superior and more user-friendly options for residential customers now.
Although I have always had good experiences with ADT technicians inside my home, the cost of the monitoring service, endless price increases, near impossibility of cancelling one's account, and infuriating offers to restore service at a far more reasonable "teaser" price after doing so only to have them start jacking the rate up and need to go through the process all over again (as opposed to rewarding long-term customers with competitive rates from the get go) really has me looking forward to their eventual demise.
On a related note, after a lifetime of crappy experiences with cabs, every article about some long established cab company going under due to UBER and/or people losing their asses trying to recoup the obscene cost of their NY cab medallion has me cackling with glee.
Evil I know, but I really can't read enough "bad news" about the implosion of the taxi industry and ADT's business model.

Pretty much the business model for any service like Dish, DirecTV, Cox cable, etc. Punish your long term users with double the rates you offer new subscribers.

    #116 4 years ago

My buddy has the ring system and it works well for what he wants but I like my system much better. I have a hard wire Swann system with 8 channels/cameras with infrared vision, a 2tb dvr that records 24/7 for 30 days before it starts to rewrite. I can review and if I want I can easily isolate, snip any section I want onto a disk or flash drive. I am registered with the police and give them snippets if they request them which has only happened twice in 8yrs.. Oh and you can set this to view on your phone or smart TV and to alert you when motion is detected if you want

Agree... but with ADT it went beyond doubling (which I probably would have been ok with indefinitely as that would have been around $55 a month). Once it broke $70 (after several years of minor increases) I was done.

Then all of a sudden after attempting to cancel (which took over an hour and several escalations to different “customer specialists”) I was eligible for a year at $19.99 a month. By that point I wasn’t interested even if the monitoring service was free.

what are the costs for your Swann system? I am presuming there was an installation cost, a cost for the hardware, and then a monitoring cost. What has all of that run you?

    #119 4 years ago
    Quoted from gdonovan:

pfft. Informed or uninformed? Fear has nothing to do with it.
If it is hooked to the 'net its spying on you, I can rattle of dozens of examples. Name one company that has had a CEO sent to jail for doing so? It will continue till someone does.
Fines? cost of doing business, far as I can tell one that does not slow them down a bit.
Download a network monitor for your computer and examine the stream of information that goes in and out, you would be shocked. Stuff that is not installed or "shut off" really isn't.

I installed it myself, it was pretty easy. I have no use for a monitoring service as it records everything and has built in Blu ray and WiFi that you can set up with their app on your phone, tablet, pc, or tv. I set my cameras for motion detection when I'm not home and if someone comes within the camera field it will alert me on my phone and I can view it. I bought a kit from Sams Club years ago which had all the hardware etc. included for installation. The kit included enough cable for each camera to be located 100' from the DVR placement. Additional cable is easy to get too. All toll it cost me $450.00 for all of it but, I bought it when they were on special there and received $200.00 off so not on sale you'd pay $650.00. Spelled it's name wrong in my other post it's made by Schwann.

Need a cheap but awesome wifi security camera with pan/tilt/zoom & 2 way intercom? I got one of these from wish.com and installed it yesterday. I expected it to be just "ok" but it's so good that I ordered 2 more for other areas of the property.

    https://www.wish.com/product/5ce51898a19f237af4553ca4

If you're away, it texts you when it detects motion. Through the app on your phone, you can instantly talk to whoever is at your home while you see them on camera. This is a lot more useful, reliable & a lot cheaper than a Ring doorbell. Keep your old doorbell and get one of these cameras instead! It's just $42 (+ shipping) with a 64gb memory card. $28 without memory card and you can sign up for $3/month cloud storage instead (this would be stupid IMHO).

It is wifi and controlled with a phone app but can also send a signal to something larger than a phone via cat/5 cable. Gone is the need for a central DVR and monitor attached to wired cameras that squirrels inevitably chew the wires on.

I know I sound like an advertisement! I get nothing if you buy one. I'm posting this because these things are THAT good20200215065500_20200215070000_0_thumb (resized).jpg20200215065500_20200215070000_0_thumb (resized).jpg.

So A few days ago..I went to the local deli to get an egg sandwich.. as I was getting back into my car..

I was in such a good mood too...now I have to confront this asshole...
So I pull up the video on my phone...I walk into the deli and I ask him if the person in the video looked familair...

At that point a lot of nervous chatter came out of his mouth and he proceeded to turn white.
Believe it or not I really felt bad for him at that point. He was really scared. Legs shaking and stuff.
So many other things ran through my head.
But, Instead I walked out and I snapped the picture of his plate.
I let him see me take the picture. I looked him again he understood from that point on.
He won't be coming 'round no more.

I gave the picture to the cops..

If you're interested in wireless security cameras, I highly recommend the Arlo Pro: https://www.arlo.com/en-us/products/arlo-pro/default.aspx

In addition to the Ring doorbell, I installed Arlos to point at every entrance to the house and to the driveway, so I get an alert anytime someone pulls in. You can also trigger a loud siren remotely.

May seem like overkill but at my last house we lived in a subdivision and we had a guy kick in our front door in the middle of the day on a Monday around noon, wife and I were both at work. Ran in and stole my laptop, never caught the guy. The laptop was about 8 years old so no big loss, but someone forcing entry into your home sticks with you.

Still can't bring myself to put any cameras (or Alexa) inside though for privacy reasons. As the joke goes:

Especially, completely avoidable, petty crime like some dumba$$ homeowner leaving a battery in plain view, in his driveway that of course, eventually gets stolen by some brokea$$ punk for the $5 or $10 recycle fee at walmart so he can buy a pack of smokes.

Similar to people not locking their car doors when parked at home in their driveway and then calling police because someone "broke into their car" and stole something. LOL

I don't understand why people are so paranoid about the government spying on them? If the government is spying on you you will not know it. Also you are not important. I am not important. People won't have a Amazon Alexa or a camera because ''The Government'' yet you will put your entire life, where you live, phone number, job everything on Facebook. No one cares about me, I'm a no one. I doubt the government cares about anything I do besides if I pay my taxes.

I would recommend everyone own at least one firearm, have a alarm for your home and a big dog is always a good deterrent. I own firearms have a alarm, cameras, ring door bell and have two Great Danes and Doberman. People walk across the street to avoid walking past my house.

    Quoted from d0n:

Especially, completely avoidable, petty crime like some dumba$$ homeowner leaving a battery in plain view, in his driveway that of course, eventually gets stolen by some brokea$$ punk for the $5 or $10 recycle fee at walmart so he can buy a pack of smokes.
Similar to people not locking their car doors when parked at home in their driveway and then calling police because someone "broke into their car" and stole something. LOL
    Cops can't fix stupid.

People have no accountability. I like the someone broke into my car complaint. No noone ''broke into your car'' they opened your unlocked door. I had stuff taken out of my car one time when I was 16 years old, because I didn't lock my door. Since then I have locked my door EVERYTIME, I'm now 43. The excuse of I forgot is not an excuse. You have to literly look at the lock button when you open the door, its less then a inch from your finger. I have been in Law enforcement for 15 years and have only seen one car window smashed on a locked vehicle because the person had cash laying on the seat in plain view. People need to help themselves instead of expecting the police to solve every problem that can be prevented with a little effort by them. Rant over.

So you are calling the OP stupid because he left an ancient, dead battery in his driveway to use as a chock for his trailer?

    Seems a little overboard.

Theft does not require 'breaking and entering'

    Theft is theft.

No Levi. Stupid and dumba$$ are very different. Stupid is not being smart enough to realize something you did could have negative repercussions. Like, if the OPs trailer was on a steeper incline and when the thief removed the $10 junk battery and the heavy trailer rolled down the driveway and smashed into the thieves vehicle. THAT would be stupid.

Dumba$$ is doing something knowing it could and probably would have negative repercussions... but you do it anyway. Like using a battery as a wheel chock.

I don't think the op is stupid.

GTFO of here with that nonsense. If the cops don't want to investigate crime, then they should get a different fucking job. I don't care if it's grand theft auto or stealing a pack of gum. They're public servants.

Agreed BUT an unlocked car door is an invitation to a thief. You can't expect the cops to care about a theft if you invite the thief to steal your stuff.

Regardless, I'm sure the stupid OP is glad you aren't exposing anybody to profanity by typing "Dumba$$."

The children of the world appreciate it!

You're not educating anyone with your 'be defensive' lecture... but it doesn't matter if it's a $10 brick, or a $10 piece of wood... he's not expecting some jackoff to come and swipe it.

If that is true then maybe he IS stupid? With all the porch pirate videos and car break ins on the news and FB and youtube, it's impossible to NOT think it could happen to you. To a thief, It's a $10 bill laying unattended in a driveway.

Sorry completely ridiculous view. Why not steal the trailer too! Crazy OP shouldn’t have left an unattended trailer in his driveway if he didn’t want it stolen. Lol. Time to go bolt down the chair on my porch, so foolish of me to assume it’s mine. Lol
