Are these boards salvageable? Who does Williams System 3 board repair? Any recommendations for replacement boards (part number and links please)?

I got a 1978 Williams World Cup as part of a trade. When I checked the boards, and the game in general, found multiple bonfire board burns - and even the line cord area was scorched. Diagnosis and advise on issues appreciated.

Can you give me an estimate of cost if for repair or replacement?

I don't want to sink a lot of money in this World Cup as they are only worth a few hundred as a project, and fully working $600. World Cup is not a holy grail for me, just a tag along game from a package deal ... but if I can save it from the dump would like to do so.

Boards look alright, no battery leakage?

The game had a remote battery hookup, so it kept the boards clean from acid from the point it was installed.

So you think the boards are worth repairing? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think they can be repaired, and going strictly by memory, you may be able to upgrade them to Sys 6. Of course, my memory is not what it used to be, so you will have to do some research. I'm pretty sure about the driver board, not so sure about the MPU.

Hi Ron,

Completely repairable.
They can be made as good as any aftermarket board.

MPU and Driver Board rehab is about $250 with parts. Sound board recap and ROM socket swap another $50. PS rehab about $40. That’s all sockets, headers, and other parts replaced as necessary (lamp matrix resistors, PS rectifying diodes).

Not cheap. But the board set will be bulletproof.

Hi Chris, thanks for the detailed quote on my boards. Five questions:

1. I have to send in all three boards? Anything else?

2. Can I turn on the game without further damage to assess the overall condition of the game? After looking at the boards I was afraid to even plug it in.

3. What caused such extensive damage? Did something blow and set up a chain reaction? What needs to be done to prevent similar blow outs?

4. What is the condition of the line cord inside the cab? There is a red disk that looks like it got so hot it melted the power cable, and burnt the cab. What do I need to do to repair that?

5. $340 will be the all inclusive price, plus shipping?

Thanks Chris

I'm only seeing two burnt places in your pics. One on the driver board, which is normal. Those resistors get hot from extended use and scorch the board. The two diodes on the psu were under-specced from the factory and also get hot from extended use. Nothing really concerning there though. The power cord is another issue.

If you follow the usual steps (plug in one thing at a time starting at the power cord, transformer, psu, mpu, sound, displays, checking voltages as you go, you should be safe. Check one of the Williams repair guides

It probably won't even try to turn on until you replace that varistor on the plug/line filter. It's cooked. Probably this one.

Thanks Travish, I had no idea what that the red thing (my technical term) was, so appreciate the link and advise!

As mentioned above, the "red thingy" needs to be replaced. It's there to protect the game from power surges. Looks like it did it's job.

Yes, $340 should do it for rehab of all 4 boards.
MPU, Driver, PS, and sound board.
Shipping info and the procedure are contained in my contact line, below.

Thanks Ron!
