Quoted from cooked71:I know cost is probably not the point of the exercise, but curious if this works out cheaper or more expensive than buying a nice original?
Quoted from woody24:Man that's awesome! That's be so awesome knowing that you're playing a brand new one that no one's ever touched before.
Can I ask, without labor, was it cheaper to build this than buy one? Kinda makes me wonder if there'd be a very small market for DIY reproduction kits. I'd buy a Monster Bash and put it together myself if I knew everything was there. I think it'd be fun.
Is it a 1 to 1 replica? Did you make any modifications? Change anything out with something better?
I don’t keep real good track of costs but probably have somewhere around $5000 into this one. That includes the NBAFB donor pin. I try to use every part possible from the NBAFB , even things like legs, insert tub, door, DMD, side rails, wire, hardware and ground braid. (Bryan Kelly made a excellent you-tube video on coin door restoration which lets you turn the old one into a new one) On MB there are two additional mechs from NBAFB that are used almost entirely, the Drac and Eject assys. Generally start looking for parts way before starting anything. Many were purchased in early 2014. Was able to get a few parts from Ebay at very reasonable prices. Also, bought quite a few "show specials" at Expo and TPF. Got some used parts from my friend Dino (Heman40) when helping him with his MB restore. Built the motor boards from parts laying around and the modified gearmotors were only 10 bucks. Getting harder to find a $1200 NBAFB. Also, it appears that as the original NOS Williams parts inventory dwindles, the prices of remaining stock increases. So, bottom line, would be tough to hit $5000 again. Time commitment is huge.
Pretty much 1 to 1 replica. Two gearmotors and motor boards are my only modifications. I moved the 10 opto board to simplify the build.
