Built an AFM from parts last year. Just getting around to posting some photos. Handmade parts include all harnesses, hex posts, insert panel, backboard, and ball guides. Converted MM Castle Actuator Brackets to Alien Brackets. Used IDC sockets for most feature lamps. SM bracket/cam modified for 3-bank target assy. Wire ramps fab'd by Matt Gaulden. Used the NBAFB apron. (different than original AFM)
Special thanks to Will Edsall (gorgar007) for doing the ball guide CADs and Dino (He-man40) for laser cutting. Also, thanks to PBL, Pinball Inc, PPS, PBR, Marco, PSPA, Mantis Amusements and Homepin for making parts available. More pics on my Skydrive. http://tinyurl.com/hhlsony

How much do you have invested in this girl?

#8 8 years ago

Awesome stuff Wally!

Any idea where a guy can find a spare NBA Fast Break???

#9 8 years ago

Gorgar007 told me somebody hit him up on this.. Nice job man! Lotta work.. But the finished product is awesome. You have a brand new afm so enjoy!

#10 8 years ago

Amazing work. Smart Man .

#11 8 years ago

Well done Wally!!!!

#12 8 years ago

This also confirms 100% that AFMr is the next remake. Rick just follows Wally's lead.

Wally made a MM, they follow suit...

Seems logical...

#13 8 years ago

Excellent work, Wally!

#14 8 years ago

Does the original AFM use circuit boards for the inserts? If so, cool workaround.

#15 8 years ago

Wallybgreat! Nice job

No,it is now the rarest pinball on the planet because everybody has converted them all into MM,CC,AFM etc!

#23 8 years ago

Very cool; I would like to think I could do this myself, but it would probably take me 5+ years just to get the parts together.

Thank you for sharing! (and realizing a dream I am sure many of us have had!).

#24 8 years ago

That's awesome!

#25 8 years ago

Crankin' em out like it ain't no thaang!

#26 8 years ago

I wish I was as talented. Beautiful job!!

#27 8 years ago

Man, you know if Wort (a martian) is praising the work, it must be good......maybe even "out of this world"....

Well done, sir. That is a gorgeous machine with a lot of love put in!

#28 8 years ago

Fantastic work as usual, Wally.

#29 8 years ago

Awesome work as usual Wally! Glad you finally got around to posting it....

Thanks,guys.
In answer to the Q's, yes, NBAFB's are getting a little harder to find at a reasonable price. This one was $1300. I found two on Craig's list, one on Pinside, and two from friends that knew I was looking.
The original AFM used PCB's for most feature lamps.
AFM probably has the lowest total BOM of the WPC-95 pins. I have somewhere around $5500 into this one. That includes the NBAFB. I try to use every part that I can from the NBAFB including things like legs, door, DMD, side rails, wire, hardware and even ground braid. I generally start looking for parts way before starting anything. Some parts were purchased in 2012. I was able to get a few of parts from Ebay at very reasonable prices. Also, I bought quite a few "show specials" at Expo and TPF. Some parts were purchased from Gene C. when he used to vend at PATZ and close to Expo. It appears that as the original NOS Williams parts inventory dwindles, the prices of remaining stock increases. So, bottom line, would be tough to hit $5500 again.

You need to do the Capcom Kingpin as would be a cool project.

I saw your MM and I can only just imagine what the AFM looks like

#37 8 years ago

You sir, are the man.

#38 8 years ago

A possible starting point if you can't grab an NBAFB cheap:

http://virtuapin.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=19&products_id=140

Plus the unpopulated playfield, that's probably about $3k right there.

Then probably $850 for the boards, DMD, transformer, etc.

Then the translite, and all the playfield parts. Yeah, trying to build from scratch now would probably be in the neighborhood of $6k or maybe $7k.

Sounds like a fun project, though

Was talking with Yancy today and just remembered that I forgot to thank him for leaving his AFM after the 2014 PBL Open House for a couple of weeks so that I could take some pics and measure a few things. So better late than never. Thanks, Yancy.

No problem! And thank you for the custom built cable to replace my old flaky one.

Wally is one of the nicest guys I've been lucky enough to meet in this hobby.
