...At least not for me. I look at my collection and say " Damn! These are all keepers!". And then reality sets in. I only have room for 5....so what do I do when MMr comes in? I know Ill need to run a WOZ and Hobbit thru at some point. Oh, and I really want a Road Show and a Dirty Harry some day too, when does that happen exactly, if I can't add without subtracting? I'd love to be opportunistic and pick up good deals on minty machines when I see them....but no room. So frustrating!

I have been lucky in that all my machines have been in truly excellent condition. I have a documented HUO Fish tales....how in the hell do I part with that? I have a flawless HUO IM... I love my Johnny Mnemonic, which looks like it came out of the box, a little fade on the front, but otherwise pristine....and the two games I got NIB: AVLE and ACDC Premium. But someday I need to say "goodbye" to one in the next 6 months...and since I have to do that I might as well consider them all transient..because I want to own them all!

I wonder how much a climate controlled storage until would be?

First world problems! Long Live Pinball!

    Find more space.

I got rid of a couple arcade games to make space for one. Then, when that wasn't enough, I rearranged my workshop in the basement to make room for a couple more. I went from being able to hold 9 to 10 to 13. I made some further changes to allow for 14, and will ultimately make room for a 15th.

Anything beyond that, they'll be in the living room, and my girlfriend will move out....

...then I'll be able to fit 10 more in what was her bedroom.

    #3 10 years ago

I'm just the opposite .I have tons of room but my wife would kill me if I mentioned getting another pin.I guess I'm lucky to have two.

    #4 10 years ago

It's kind of a sin to store games; I had a game in storage for 6 months while I was moving and it was kind of a waste. These games are meant to be played and appreciated, not hoarded I've met a person with 75+ games and only 8 set up with legs on.

With a 5 game lineup; I'd pick 3 or 4 games that are your keepers. Then use the other 1-2 spots as your rotation games.

    #6 10 years ago

Never enough spaces I know the feeling used to be able to have party's in my little basemnt bar now maybe 3 people at a time can shuffle though. When the collection is all good and you just don't have that temporary pin it sucks to part with a trophy pin and it will be regretted had to let huo champ pub go now I want it back although don't think I've sold many pins without thinkin later damn I want that back beware what you get rid of your gonna want it back what you need is a ware house with unlimited man cave space .i have six pins maybe squeeze 7 in like a Tetris puzzle I hate eyeballing the next to go trying to think why that ones the worst

Don't mention it. Just do it! Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

    #8 10 years ago

Nelson...some will be keepers. But you just need to either find more space or be comfy with knowing you're going to rotate stuff out.

For me, my keeper is Tron. I've toyed with letting it go a few times, but it always passes, and I know the only way its going to leave is if I replace it with an LE.

I'm ready for each of these when you are ready to move on.

If you have the cash, and no problem with a spouse, you can always find room somewhere for that next keeper. I kept 4 in my garage and rotated from A-list spot inside to B-list outside. Never say you have no more room!-Joe

Sell to someone you know and trust with first buy back option.
    Temp trade is another option.

    #13 10 years ago

    make more room or sell

    easy decision for me.

    #14 10 years ago

I'm just a player, collecting to me is for the insecure and obsessively compulsive. When I get a game I will play it with bulldog tenacity and once it's been won or I come to my senses and concede then out she goes and in comes another.

I know of someone whose father passed away when he was in utero. The departed gentelmans name was Fred. That flintstones isn't going anywhere.

Build a keeper base @ home & then play on route & @ leagues

    #16 10 years ago

Bring that FT 13 miles south - I'm sure we can figure out a trade

    #17 10 years ago

I am more or less in the same situation. There are no keepers for me too. The equation is the following:
    - I have room for 7 and currently no solution to have more at home.
    - I might keep one more at a friend's place nearby.
    - I don't like storing them without playing them... these beasts are here to played and loved...
    - My wish list is very, very long, from EMs to Predator...
    - Assuming they would all be 100% functional, I would be happy with a lineup of 7-8 pins. But I ressent any non functional pin as dead space.

So I accepted the notion they would all rotate. Some faster than the others - some I could not get rid off fast enough! Among my current lineup, LOTR, WPT and Spectrum (which has sentimental value as my first pin) I might keep longer but... never say never!

That I'm is beautiful. I can store it at my place

    #19 10 years ago

I used to think that. But I'd be miserable if I couldn't play GnR

    #20 10 years ago

We have room for about 30 machines and still run into the same problem. We don't get into "A" list titles because we can own 4 or 5 nice System 11 or Data East machines for the cost of most "A" list machines but for over a year now we have been totally out of space. Right now I am in the process of selling a super nice Doctor Who because that is our least favorite machine. Then I think the next one to go will be my Nitro Groundshaker that it took me 3 years to finally get a super nice one. Cabinet has some fade but playfield and backglass are super and it is rare to find a Nitro with a nice playfield and backglass. Since I am a car guy I hate to even think about selling it but it just doesn't get played enough to hang on to if something "better" comes along.

It really sucks because most of us would love to keep them all but with limited space it seems like something has to keep leaving to make room for something new & exciting. Thankfully I have only sold a couple machines I regret selling but I know it is going to happen more often now that we pretty much have the line up we were looking for.

We feel very luck we have had the honor of owning so many machines we have enjoyed but each time we pick up something new a choice now has to be made.

TheFamilyArcade said he only has room for five machines....Did the Smurf's build your house? Keebler Elves?? Must be a way to squeeze in a couple more??

That was exactly the plan. And then I wind up with 5 "keepers". I suppose few people would consider JM a keeper - maybe I'm in the honeymoon phase - but I love it. Same with FT. I can't believe how much I like it. I think "IM would fetch some good dough", and then I play it and realize its the ultimate keeper. A fun fast game that will kick your ass over and over again, and yet it's a blast to play. The objectives are clear and linear, but so fun.

So now I'm down to ACDC and AVLE...and everyone knows how I feel about AVLE....so that leaves ACDC. Really? I'm going to sell ACDC? Cripes.

Ha! I know what you mean. I do live in a bit of a hobbit house. No toppers for me! I call my bedroom "the shire" because I can only stretch my arms all the way above my head if I'm sitting down.

Yes, there's room, but not as far as the wife is concerned. And I admit that I like the game room as it is with some projector screen tv action. I could fit 3 machines against that wall if I wanted to. I could squeeze another one in my office, but that would feel cramped. Normal living space is out of the question, I'm with my wife on that one. But I got her from 1 future spa to 5 in just a couple years (actually 6 before I sold TF)...so I guess it's not game over yet.

That's what I'm doing with ST, WOZ and MET. I play them every time I commute to the city. They're in a bar by my bus stop. Helps me with the shakes...but I hate the volume being so low that I can't immerse myself in the games.

    Quoted from MustangPaul:

What, do you think we would be living in sin?

...It's actually just basically her storage room of crap that won't be used again for years if ever, but there's a bed in there, so that's what we call it.

    #29 10 years ago

Bram Stokers Dracula. That is my keeper. Somebody else can sell it when I die. Other than that, I'll play them until I'm bored with it, and then out it goes. Don't get me wrong, there are some that will be around my house for a very long time. But even Harlem Globetrotters will eventually wear out its welcome a few years down the road.

    #30 10 years ago

BSD for me too. I'd sell it for 5000 though, or trade for something twice it's value haha...So it's a keeper, but everything is for sale for the right price

My wife let me go from no pins to five pins in one year. I am at my limit for now. Not because of space, but because of her limits. The last pin was not planned and when I got it home, I discovered that it won't fit in the basement with the factory topper on. It is currently in her scrapbook room against her wishes. I'm letting the dust settle a bit. I might end up taking the topper off and putting it downstairs with his other friends. Will see.....BigB

    Bring headphones for the WOZ

Are there no pinball destinations in your area? No leagues or hobbyist house parties?

I drive 2.5 hours round trip 1-3 times a month to go on a 6 hour bender @ our premier pinball spot. We have several other places in the area too.

There is nothing in a 90 mile radius around you?

    #35 10 years ago

Oh... this thread is about pinball machines... I was gonna +1 ya assuming it was about wives.

    #36 10 years ago

I agree. None of your games are keepers. At least not for me.

    #37 10 years ago

    I feel your pain brother.
Condo with room for only 1 setup, and another in storage.
Still, you sell what you have as soon as something better or different comes along.
There is an obsession to collecting and hoarding in this hobby, that's for sure.
(Not that there's anything wrong with that!)
For me, this limited space keeps my budget in check and my marriage intact.
(I'm picking up my new STLE tomorrow!)

    #38 10 years ago

some of those one's you can never get back after you let 'em go

    Great call on the phones!!

Where I live there is nothing on route. And I mean nothing. Used to be about 10 pins at the mall. Now zero. There's good guys in the area that have parties, which is awesome. About an hour away is RockFantasy. Cool place, but it's just far enough away to say "screw it".

There's a lot of pinball in the city...but not that convenient and not a lot of time to get around. I've debated whether to head over to Modern Pinball a few times now...but the whole deal is going to add a minimum of 2 hours to my "get home" time. East/west in NYC is not nearly as easy as north south. And NYC isn't exactly the easiest place to get in or out of, especially when you want to get home to your kids anywhere near commute hours. You'll see what it's like soon enough...baby wins, pretty much every time.

I was in the NYC pinball league for a couple years. Lots and lots of fun, but a pretty big commitment for someone that doesn't actually live in Manhattan or Brooklyn. I don't drink anymore either..,and I think if I was going to Brooklyn for league play with a bunch of hipsters in checked shirts and skateboard shoes, I'd need more than a few shots.

Yup. It's the fact that I may never get as nice an example back. I know I can sell and buy back...but you should see the shooter lanes on my pins! Pinball porn!

Let friends borrow them and rotate out till you get more space worked in!

I felt the same way when I was locked in a 6 pin max room. Now after I expanded to another room with a wife imposed 12 pin max I am feeling it all over again. I could probably expand to 20 and feel it again. There is never enough room. Need to learn to let go.

So, what do you suggest I do with the 100 games I have in storage while my games room is built, which is gonna take around 2 years...? I only have space to have 4 set up at the moment...

    #50 10 years ago

I could agree, there are games I thought I would never sell, but finally ended up letting it go. But I would say keeper doesn't necessarily mean permanent, just a long term keeper. However, my first Nib game is still my favorite, since I bought it in 2007, and it would be the last game I own if i sold out. So until I am, out of the hobby, my Spider-Man is a keeper.
