A fellow pinhead asked for my help a while ago after his mylar removal gone horribly wrong. It was a custom mylar covering whole playfield, I have seen a few like that before in games imported from Italy. I had done a couple of playfield restorations before this, and I told him I would do what I can to save that playfield. When I got it, it was like this...

After stripping down the playfield I scanned it and removed rest of the mylar. Not many inserts survived. I scraped damaged inserts clean, fixed scoop with bondo. I wasn´t sure how fix this, that book looked really hard to do.

After first layer of clearcoat I painted white bases followed by gray areas. Stencils are made using cameo cutter.

Nice match on the gray! I love my Silhouette Cameo, glad to see it being used here!

Thanks! Silhouette opened new ways to do things. Wouldn't / couldn't have done this one without it.

Yellow, red and blue next.

edit: Those red letterings turn really blurry when I upload images. I tried both hi-res and original size, didn't make any difference.

Took me a while to decide what to do with the mode book. I was hoping that I could use an overlay, but quality of decal from Pinball Center was so bad that I had to find another way.

Looking good!

I love reading through stuff like this, thank you for sharing.

Awesome work.

How was the mylar removed? No freeze spray involved?

#12 5 years ago

Thanks for comments, nice to see someone is reading this. Im not sure what method my friend used with mylar, but I tried freeze, heat and isopropanol. Still couldn't get it off without damaging inserts. It's wasn't mylar usually used on playfields, but thinner and harder to get off.

First try with waterslide decals. I vectorized graphics and printed with color laser printer on transparent waterslide paper. Colors look okay with white background, but inserts are too dark and lack of colour. MAGIC letters turned out fine because of white semi-opaque inserts.

Next try on book. Sanded off previous waterslide, this time I painted insert letterings. Also painted white gradient backing for T and R.
