Anyone able to help with this issue?

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/tom-help-trap-door-not-ejecting-balls

The release coil mech doesn't seem to be working, to allow the balls to the trap door for ejection. It was working fine, than all of a sudden, nothing. When I took the release coil mech out completely, the balls got ejected from the trap door, but the multiple locks didnt' work properly.

Most probably a switch not being activated to say a ball is there trapped or the trap coil is broken ie. Wire is off etc. Try test firing that coil to see if it fires. If yes then look at the switches the ball rests on
Most likely the switch for the first ball lock

Anyone ever come across this issue ........... "Every once in a while if you get multiple events going at the same time it acts a little unpredictably, like maybe lighting Theatre and starting one of the illusions within a few seconds of each other".

Hi everyone,
I'm very proud having purchased a TOM yesterday.
However, the complete assembly of the TRUNK is missing. Has anybody one to sell or could give a hint where I can get one?
Greetings from Austria.

What is missing exactly. I have all the metal pieces and motor/gearbox and maybe wire harness. I have plastic trunk as well. Also I am in australia. Let me know via mail and will see exactly what I have you need and whether I am will sell and risk my parts trunk doesn't break

#2856 4 years ago

Here is what I have found so far
All are new/never used except for trunk eddy pcb. Obviously you can easily get the screws and hardware needed to put it all together.

Just looking at the manual, I think I also have the opto assembly, led sensors, magnet decal. Will need to look harder to see if I have anything else though.

I also have complete trapdoor assembly, hell I still have lots of parts for tom.

Few things to consider for some of the parts you need.

Opto Interrupter - consider this one as opposed to the plastic one - https://www.ministryofpinball.com/en/catalog/product/view/id/6844/s/theatre-of-magic-trunk-opto-interrupter-new/category/156/

Trunk - get the "unbreakable" one - https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/unbreakable-trunk-for-the-theatre-of-magic

Lastly, consider the Pinbits Eddy boards - https://www.pinbits.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=13_33

and apologies Embryon, not trying to take a sale from ya.

My pin is missing the left ramp exit guard and as it is impossible to find (in stores) I decided to make my own.

I hoped that I should be able to re-purpose a ramp guard that was close to what I needed from some other pin and after looking around a bit I saw the "01-15200.1-2 STAR WARS E1 (Williams_ Bracket-large ramp end)". Get it here https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/01-15200.1-2
Note: There are two SW protectors, make sure to get the one with the correct curve!

I took a chance and ordered it.
20191111_195058 (resized).jpg20191111_195058 (resized).jpg

The protectors curve fit nicely, but the arm is obviously too long.
20191111_195111 (resized).jpg20191111_195111 (resized).jpg

Marked where to cut it off.
20191111_195505 (resized).jpg20191111_195505 (resized).jpg

After cutting. It's not super round but it's decent enough.
20191111_212951 (resized).jpg20191111_212951 (resized).jpg

Measured hole position and used a metal drill (that metal was pretty hard to drill).
Screwed to pin and whoaaah, fits like a glove!
20191111_221935 (resized).jpg20191111_221935 (resized).jpg

Looks great imo.
20191111_222007 (resized).jpg20191111_222007 (resized).jpg

All in all, the metal works took about 30-40 minutes in total, not bad for making an unobtainable part.

Edit: an unexpected advantage of having the ramp protector is that the ball doesn't "bounce" back up once before falling down (as it always did for me without it). This makes the game feel a tiny bit faster/smoother for me.

Does anyone have or already done a scan of the Spirit Ring area, Im trying to do a small overlay. I already have the insert sticker.

I've always wondered about the shooter ramp assembly construction; is the ball supposed to stop against that sloping metal piece and fall down through the hole onto the habitrail below?

It feels like there should be a dampening pad (similar to say the one on the TAF bookcase or those blue pads often found at end of habitrails) just to avoid nicking the ball against the steel. The manual doesn't give a good view of the assembly and same when looking at different PF pics online, but it seems there aren't anything except steel there.

My ramp ends with a square-ish "hole" in the metal and It feels like there could be a place for some pad there. All real ToM pins I've seen doesn't have anything there so I guess all is ok, or am I actually missing a piece?

Hey folks, I am having trouble with my ToM registering phantom secret ball locks. Any ideas? Have a new trunk board and and old and they both exhibit the same behavior.

Thanks for any leads!

Edit: I am thinking its switch 36 / subway opto. Will look more tonight.

Hello, my spirit ring doesn’t seem to grab any ball anymore. ( it never switch on during game play ). When tested it seems to work’ so I guess it’s a switch that doesn’t register the ball going down the ramp. Any idea where is that switch and it’s name on Twitter the manual?

More generally how should the spirit ring kicks in during game play? I really never bothered to understand it as it was happening from time to time before when I was playing and now I would like to test it and not really sure what triggers it?

Cheers, Étienne

HI Gents, looking to pickup a TOM this week and join the club and had a question on the saw blade mod. I saw the video made by Pinball brotherhood which used a real saw blade and the existing bracket. Is this still available to purchase(can't seem to find a web site)? if not does someone have a link to a DIY link as 300 for this mod is steep for what it is. Going through this tread is time consuming, only up to page 12. Looking forward to this machine, but I see a lot of people who have said they sold it as it wasn't very deep. I have a TZ and love that machine and these era machines I seem to gravitate to.

Pinball Pro has the blade mod for $200 (still a little steep but better) https://pinballpro.net/shop/theatre-magic-motorized-gold-tiger-saw-blade/. I think the combo pack they have with the saw and lighted marquee mirror is really cool for $300 https://pinballpro.net/shop/theatre-of-magic-motorized-gold-tiger-saw-blade-w-lighted-marquee-mirror/.

I don’t have a TOM (yet!) but I’m already shopping for mods....

Yeah, way back in the day you could get a kit for the saw blade motorization for like $75. By the time I decided to add one, I was stuck with either some DIY option using a computer fan as the motor, or the expensive kit with the marquee. I got my combo kit somewhere else and the marquee looks a little different, and it wasn't $300. I was feeling the pain at $200 for the combo a few years back.

#2871 4 years ago

I love the tiger resin mod a lot check it out!
Think it is a supplier on here.

With the fan I did my own mod, computer fan for the blade.

With the mirror I made my own modified one from gold mirror and put two inserts behind the tiger heads to match the in lanes which came out well and eady to see.

Thanks gents, picked up the game and still going through it...lubed the chest gearbox, flippers need rebuilding...and all that new machine stuff. But looking at this tiger mod, I can find the rom no problem ver 1.4H that works with the tiger mod, but the u22 seems to be a problem. Anyone know where to obtain that?

Yeah, they have been scarce for a little while now.

eBay has a listing for 2 U22 chips, but one is for Medieval Madness, for $55. Maybe you could make an offer just for the TOM one?

ebay.com link: Lot of 2 Williams WPC S CPU U22 security chips Medieval Madness Theatre of magic

Just an option. The usual places seem to be out.

In case you didn't have it already, the part number is A-5400-50039-1

I've found in the past that searching by part number and searching by description can yield different results.

Good luck.

I joined the club in the middle of 2019 when I found a Theatre of Magic hidden under a pile of empty cardboard boxes in a basement. The owner had been telling me for some time he had a “magic” pinball, but wasn’t sure of the exact name. I made him and offer and picked it up the next day.

It’s been a crazy year that forced me to focus more on getting a home ready to sell and buying another, so the game sat in a partially functioning state. It played with some trunk errors and really mostly needed a shop job. I also decided to give it the full brass upgrade from Hot Rod Arcade. Over the last couple weeks I’ve been able to put a little time into the restore, so I thought I would post some progress pics.

Here’s what I’ve done so far: full topside tear down and cleaning, installed a new leg bracket (one hole was stripped on a rear bracket when I found it), new rubbers, Comet LEDs (all the GI and backbox swapped, still have to do the inserts), Ingo trunk board upgrade, Pinbits self adjusting eddy boards, all the brass installed except the side rails.

I still plan on adding a color DMD and maybe the illuminated apron that Pinball Dreams made. I’ll post more pics when everything is finished up.

I’m working on the same thing I’m planing to use Sorens modified rom https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/new-theatre-of-magic-software-mod-version-2#post-5070060
It supports the tiger saw mod on solenoid driver nr 19 and some other fixes like ball save if hocus pocus magnets misses the ball. There’s also a patched version so you wouldnt need the u22 chip. All you need is to connect the motor thru an EMI filter, very important. I just created a pcb based on williams common motor EMI filter. I made 10 of them if someone needs one. They were all out of stock everywhere I live in sweden
I’m gonna do some measures and tests first, but for what I understand it is just to connect on J116-2 and J126-3.
Please keep us posted and I’ll do the same
Good luck!

I can post more images if someone's interested!

Added over 4 years ago:

Build cost:
DC Motor $0 (found it in the trash at work. Could be any 12v dc motor)
Gold mirror saw blade $20 on ebay (optional, for the fancy look)
EMI motor filter about $2 self made ($15 for a new) (actually I made 10 of then and gave some away in exchange for money)
PWM to control motor speed $3 from Wish (optional, if you want the blade to move slower)
Some scrap nuts, bolts and wires.
Total $25 (due the the EMI filters I actually made some money on the build )

If you use the original saw blade and only buy the EMI filer you could get it done for $15. DC motors you could easily find if you look in electronics recycle bins somewhere.
I chose between 3 different motors that I found. Ended up with the smallest. It was from an old printer.

What is the best way to stop the trunk from moving too much from a off-center hit?

The plastic opto interrupter isn't broken, seems newer actually. How tight should I adjust the set screw? Thanks!

Hey everyone. New owner! Love the game, but discovered it is missing the gate at the top of the playfield. I believe it goes in front of the vanish kickout. I think this is the one:

https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/A-19002

First, is this the right one? Second, are they available anywhere?

Also, I don't see anywhere in the menu to turn off the continue function after the game ends.

Any helo would be appreciated!

Thanks!

The part number matches, but it's odd Marcos doesn't list it as used on TOM. I looked up all the TOM gates Marcos carries, and I think this one is correct. That said, I'll look at my machine tonight to confirm.

Thanks for confirming. After browsing through the Marcos TOM gates, I thought that was right. I just finished the topside reassembly of my game after an extensive shop job, and it seemed correct. But I couldn't find a clear picture of the wire shape on the gate. It's odd that that part number doesn't show up in the manual anywhere.

I appreciate all the help. I need to tear down the playfield (really don't want to) to measure between posts (that the gate is screwed on to). Ray from Action Pinball said he may be able to cobble one together if I can get him that measurement. He says the gate that he has is 3-3/16 inches apart. Oh well, looks like I'm taking ramps out. Too bad it is so integral. Problem is the ball will sit in the saucer and another ball will fall in. Now two balls in the saucer, and it won't kick out.

Anyways, anyone know how to turn off the continue feature? I looked but did not see one.

Thanks again!

Not sure what you mean by the continue feature? like to continue the game by "purchasing" another ball? I know you can reduce it from like 4 to 1, I assume you can go to zero too, but I keep it at one on my machine-never tried to go to zero.

The "buy in" feature can be disabled in the service/adjustments menu

Hi all, newbie here with a question:

When a game on my Theatre of Magic ends, I don't hear the game end music. "Game Over" appears on the DMD to silence. I can't seem to find a setting for this in the manual. I do have the match turned off - would that have anything to do with it?

Also, I tried to use the "sound and speech" check in utilities, but I kept hearing just three things over and over. Isn't it supposed to run me through all the music and all the speech?

Any help you can give would be... helpful! Thanks.

I've noticed the same thing on my sound and speach check too, so I'm guessing that is normal...not sure about the end of game sound...try turning off the match option?

Turns out that was the answer. I turned match back on, and the music I was looking for was there. So I guess it's the "match music," only heard if the match is enabled.

Thanks for your input.

Hi.
I'm searching a complete plastic set.
It seems to be "out of stock" in the entire galaxy.
Does someone knows where I can find it ?
Thx
