That would be called an unrealized gain. Or unrealized loss.

Reggie Jackson did OK with his muscle car collection he accumulated 30-35 years ago. Before prices went into the stratosphere.
Depends on the car. Depends on the pin. And depends if you can avoid getting yourself buried in the restoration.

If I recall correctly Reggie also had a fire in the Building affecting some of his collection.
I believe it was due to stain rags being left around by contractor. Spontaneous combustion.‍♂️

    Quoted from SLAMT1LT:

The only investment I care about is my valuable time. I want a high return of FUN for my time investment. A high volume of time invested in something with a low FUN return is a very bad investment.
What does all this waffle mean? Doesn't matter how much the game costs (it's just paper), the amount of FUN you get back is your capital gain.

I bought a disaster game that I overpaid on. Not including that I had to buy parts & supplies on top of that. The fun was the journey and the satisfaction of keeping a game from the garbage dump. I dumped almost all of my collection when I moved just as covid hit. One reason was I had a very short window of time to move in, and a whole lot of things to move so I was looking for ways to make that go easier. I also figured people were going to start selling "luxury" items because the economy would tank and people would need money. I was certainly wrong on that one.

You recall correctly. And what he had left over was still a nice investment for him.
