Ok.... I just wanted to share my childhood pinball story to be passed down to my Son. This is my first NIB machine and I got it delivered last week. I have been dying to open it, look at it, take it out of the box and play it until my finger prints are worn off. But my son went to Florida for two weeks to help his Grandparents move and I told him before he left, if X-Men arrives I will not open it until you get home.

Back 32 years ago, when I was a kid growing up, I always enjoyed playing pinball at my Aunt and Uncle’s house. My Cousin was a coin operator, and he had a 1972 Swinger in their basement. I used to play the machine for hours and hours. Well in 1980, Williams made the Black Knight, which needs no introduction. He had it delivered to his parents house (my Aunt and Uncle), because he was living in a apartment at the time, and I just happen to be there when it was delivered. I ask him what was in the huge box?.... He told me a new pinball machine, "The Black Knight". My eyes must of got the size of softballs, because he started laughing at me. I was so excited to see what a new pinball looked like. So he started unboxing the machine and set it up in the garage. When he finished he clicked on some credits and told me these words I will never forget...." You get the First game on this machine." I was in SHOCK, this machine was Totally Awesome..... Of course, back then pinballs never talked, or had ramps, magn-saves, and multi-balls, etc... Well compared to the 1972 Swinger that is.

I am so excited that my Son is coming home today. Also I have not said a word to him about the X-Men Wolverine being in the garage waiting for him. I cannot wait to open it, set it up, click on a few credits and then I will tell him, “You get the First game on this machine”.

This is the memory of pinball that I want my son to remember who has grown up with pinballs all his life. Thanks to Stern Pinball for letting a Father pass down a childhood memories to his Son.

I will do my best to take some pictures and post them here,

    Steve

Wow this is great. What a great dad

    great story!

at first glance, I thought it was some d-bag complaining about not getting to open the NIB's he bought, so he can sell them for profit later. hehe

    #4 7 years ago

Now thats what its all about!!!

    #5 7 years ago

I did the same thing with my daughter. We opened Tron in the garage, powered it on, and she took the first game.

Of course, I was putting away my screwdriver and she STOLE the first turn from me, but I guess it all worked out.

    #6 7 years ago

I took the first ten plays, made my son watch, then made him get me a beer, then I let him play

    AWESOME STORY!!!!

A few quick issues I had with mine out of the box that you should check:

    1. The GI connectors had come unplugged in the bottom of the cab (one connector)
    2. "Pedro" at the factory had put a 3A S.B. fuse in for my coils which is supposed to be a 7A S.B.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it the quick once over before he starts the game.... I changed the title of my post because it could of taken on a different meaning. I have been reading all the postings about the X-Men and I know it might need some tweaking, and I am good with that.

This will be something he NEVER forgets So glad you shared and awesome story I hope to do the same thing one day. I have a god son that is 4 and seems to love pinball. I love it when he comes over and is kind of shy to ask me to play, then loves it so fun

    #12 7 years ago

This is also my 1st nib.I let my kids play the 1st few games.
Have a fun time unboxing and playing your new game with your son!

    #13 7 years ago

Great story, nothing that is more satisfying than sharing these moments with family or friends (or both )! That's what's most important in life.

    #14 7 years ago

Great story, Hemi!!! I did the same thing with my kids. We have 2 pins, and have been spoiled as they were both NIB purchases (Spiderman and TRON). My kids got the first games on both. They both enjoy playing a little silverball, and I couldn't be happier about it. I hope that they have fond memories of the whole experience. They came home to find the first pin in the garage, and couldn't wait to get it unboxed and set up. They got to be there to watch TRON come off the truck and were super stoked!!! Someday I'll pass them down to the kiddos and I hope they remember all of the games that we play together and pass the love of pinball on to their kids. That's what it's all about!!! Really great story!!! Enjoy your new game!!!

I usually shop a machine out right away and as soon as I finish up and put the glass on, I go get her to play the first game.

    Great post!

Best post I've read in a very long time. I nominate Hemi for Man of the Year.

    #21 7 years ago

Man, I would have played the role of your son for a night. I'm probably 5 minutes from you. How's the pin?

    #22 7 years ago

You Tripped that the box got ripped open, and the legs ended up on the game =)

    #23 7 years ago

WOW!! Thanks for sharing, almost as good as being there.

    #24 7 years ago

Thank JJ... That's a good one, but if the machine was set up, he would of known I played it..... .

The machine is FAST AND FURIOUS..... It just needed the e-clip added to the spinner. It was not making any noise, but in the test mode after 20 plays the magnet was lifting during the diagnostic test. I installed the e-clip and it spins freely and there is no lifting of slop...... Everything else is working great. The Iceman ramp clears Wolverine claws no problem. And the bottom of Wolverine arms seem to be shaved from Stern to prevent the ball from getting hung up. It is serial # 269 and was built and shipped to me on the same day, July 25, 2012. I will post some pictures tomorrow..... Also CAN NOT WAIT TO PLAY IT AGAIN. ITS ADDICTING.

Great! ya I did the E-clip to our floor game as well.

I actually think you may appreciate the game more since your waiting. I havent played mine in over a week as the current code pretty much sucks. By the time your son comes home hopefully there will be a new code update & you will hopefully have a more polished game to play.

    #29 7 years ago

That is a brilliant story, I have to admit I got a little tear in the eye. Pins are one thing but family are another all together and to do that for your son is top shelf!
Thanks so much for sharing it with everyone.

    #30 7 years ago

    Fatherhood...you are doing it right.

    #31 7 years ago

Wow great story, it will be a great memory for both of you I'm sure. I tried something similar (honoring them with the 1st game) with my significant other, but got more of a sarcastic "thanks" accompanied by Guess it helps if the person actually likes pinball lol.

Here are some pictures of the un-boxing and first game ....

It was a GREAT NIGHT for the Family

He is a great kid and I hope he does the same thing when he has his own kids someday..... but I don't want to rush that by any means.

    That's very cool man.

This doesn't have to be a once in a lifetime event either, you can taste this again.

As he gets older and leaves home for good, you should make a tradition out of it.

Whenever you get a new game, he comes in for a visit (maybe even with his own family some day) and you get to have this cool "thing" that you guys share together. Always unboxing together.

That is awesome, great job dad! My son is 13 and I have introduced him to pins over the past few years. I enjoy it when his buddies come over and experience pinball for the first time.
