Mandalay Bay is our go to place to stay. Super close to PHOF.

Yeah, the Diamond Inn is super sketch, especially at night. I cross the street when walking back to Mandalay Bay just to avoid it.

Just got into Vegas. Been over a decade since last visit to PHOF. Can't wait to spend time there after Christmas day. I assume they are closed for xmas? Gonna bus from MGM.

    #703 2 years ago

Monopoly by Stern has been upgraded with a Colour DMD, donated by one of the volunteers.

    Picture coming tomorrow.

    Merry Christmas!

PHoF is OPEN Christmas Day from 3Pm to 10pm.

With the exception of the forced closure a year ago (due to Covid) the PHoF is open 365 days a year.

I've stayed at that Motel 6 on Tropicana before. Surprisingly, for bring across the street from the runways at McCarran, I never heard any noise from the airport.

Sometimes the noise is a bit of the charm…

I will be going there next month, can’t wait….

You will have a blast. I can't wait to get back.

Ha, just picturing how some might be struck by the apparent irony of a bunch of degen pinball players being worried about strange people or "drug trouble" at a nearby motel. In Vegas!

Good story about how the Pinball Circus ended up at the PHOF. Yes, I'm that nerd reading the info cards on the games.

Sounds like a good candidate for a CGC remake

    #712 2 years ago

It would be nice to see this on location around my area. That would certainly happen if they remade it.

Does anyone know if they put up the name plates of the sponsors who contributed??

Good story about how the Pinball Circus ended up at the PHOF.

The game was one test for a couple years, longer than most test games. It was then stored for years. Mike Pacak got it to Pinball Expo in 2005. I had it at my Pinball Circus in the spring of 2006.

We stored it until August and Greg Kemnitz took it to The Pinball Hall of Fame and met Steve Kordek and his wife and later had dinner with them.

No, not yet. The leaders are very well aware of the tardiness in getting it up. All information is still retained. Hopefully Q1 next year. I’ll post when it is up.

    It’s PACKED right now.

    Merry Christmas!

Played this unique game for about 10 minutes, and in that time, I think I saw all it had to show me. Tim's comments on the info card are pretty spot-on accurate. It IS a weird game. Made, no doubt, to capitalize on the video arcade craze at the time. The designer simplified the game by having the layout dictate the shots, so I think it takes away a lot of the fun of pinball - the randomness of where to shoot the ball next. On this table, it's pretty much either shoot the left curve or the right curve, or up the middle to prevent the monsters from coming down to get you. At least that part kind of matches the video game. The flippers at the bottom are an oddity, too. The bottom right flipper is controlled by the left flipper switch, so that takes some getting used to.

Didn't seem to me like the start button was in such an odd place on this one, so don't know why the nubes can't seem to find it. But clearly, they don't, as evidenced by the 10 credits on the game when I found it. Thus the big pink star sign on the backglass reminding players to push the start button.

I also don't get how the "Ball in Play" is at 20, or why you'd even have a double-digit display for that, but whatever.

I owned one for a short time. Bought it, got it running, and couldn’t sell it fast enough.

    #718 2 years ago

Pretty great that the PHOF often has the replay version and the add-a-ball version of em games next to each other, so players can compare. Cool little detail on the Subway info card, that I would not have noticed otherwise. Also, Porange not so impressed with my last game on Subway.

My favorite games in this hobby are the em arcades. PHOF has a pretty incredible collection of some of the best titles. This trip, the Grand Prize big ball bowler, United's 5th Inning, Funland gun game, Sidewalk Engineer Crane, Hi-Score Pool and a few pitch-n-bats were all working. My previous trip, Genco 2-Player basketball, Pop-Up, All-Star Bowler, Texas Ranger Gatling Gun and The Safe were working, but were unfortunately down this time around.

There's some pretty amazing titles on the floor, awaiting repairs. Lots of games at the PHOF, gotta tackle 'em one at a time, but I'll admit I'm looking forward to the chance to play these in the future:

Vegas is so packed. The hall was super busy all day. There were a lot of games in bad shape, hack looking repairs or turned off. Worried with the increased popularity of this location the volunteers won't be able to keep up.
What about curtaining off the pile of parts machines and rough projects that are placed all over? Have a roped off maintenance area you can cart games to.

Had a great time despite and issues.

    #722 2 years ago

There’s still about 180 pins in storage, off site, also.

I would call that 'growing pains" and hopefully it will slowly resolve itself. But in the end Tim has always been all about running an arcade and even back in the 1970's & 1980's when arcades were popular there were always a bunch of machines with out of order signs on them.

When you are open 7 days a week and have as many machines as PHoF it is going to be impossible to always have everything 100%. Could things be better - the answer to that is YES (100% for sure). But I think people need to realize things will never be perfect and when they go to PHoF just learn to enjoy what is working and enjoy the place for what it is. Not worry about how it could be better or what is turned off and not working.

One thing I think we can all agree on is every time Tim makes a move things keep getting better and Tim seems to have the "magic formula" for a very successful arcade which makes a lot of money that will soon be going to charity again.

And that new sign is fantastic!

I was there today, and yup, it was packed again. I played some of my old favorites, and some of the new pins. I did run across a few problems, and I took the time to right them down in the trouble notebook at the front counter. I’m hoping to get a chance to work on a few games there next time the Banning crew pays a visit.

Thank you for utilizing the book!

I personally own 4 now and it there’s something wrong with all of them. When there’s 450 of them, yeah. We definitely need the patrons help in identifying issues.

Today a large plastic completely broke off of Avengers and a similar thing on ninja turtles and those games are like 2 years old tops.

    Good lord.

Only hours adjustment made for NYE is that the PHoF is closing at 9 instead the usual 10pm on Friday (NYE) night.

Every time I go to the PHOF, seems like there's always one machine that stands out to me. Something I haven't seen before, or a game I haven't spent any time playing, that just ends up being fascinating. Last trip it was the United's 5th Inning shuffle. This trip, it was this playmatic Speakeasy. Been in the hobby almost 20 years, thought I was aware of most of the em pinballs out there, but had never heard of this one. What a great game!

It's got kind of a weird plastic ethos to the playfield, but really, in a good way. It had a tactile feeling unlike any other pin table I've tried. The kick-out holes adjust the slot machine reels in the backglass. The holes are not easy to hit, but not impossibly challenging, either.

The key feature to me was that little target tunnel in the middle of the game. The stand-up targets next to it adjust the bonus and other stuff. The left side of that center playfield feature, there's no target. You have to hit the ball through the opening, and that's not easy to do. What a cool change of pace!

I had a lot of fun playing this game. If the cash box level was higher than normal in this game last week, that was me.

Can we donate parts like needed ramps, plastics and playfields? Many more new parts are available these days.
I think a bucket of those clear lexan washers would be good too to help with the broken plastics.

I've never had a chance to play any modern Stern's of jjp machines before as I've not gone to any shows in USA.
I was surprised how much I liked the feel of Stern games. They may seem sparse or cheap compared to WPC but damn are they fast and feel good. Enough that I'm thinking of selling some wpc to get a newer stern.
With jjp I was really impressed with the production but I hated WOZ surprisingly and hobbit I could literally play endlessly on my first credit. What a floaty mess.
Last thing I learned is I need to get a 2" flipper game like target pool. Loved the nudging.

    #734 2 years ago

The high number of broken games has always been a major issue at tphof. I love the place and the charity etc, but I always go in knowing most of the classics are most likely going to be turned off or have major issues. Only a few will play well. The ems are great though!

I've said it before, the name "Hall of Fame" sets unrealistic expectations. Imagine if Cooperstown or Cleveland had Halls of Fame where half the exhibits were run down or out of order yet on display.

Note I'm not complaining! Try getting in those places for free. ($25 and $30!) Or interacting with the displays anything like playing a pin. It's just an unfortunately confusing name for the place is all.

I just wish everyone would be thankful for what Tim has accomplished instead of always having something to say about what is wrong with the place. He could just close it down and have a hell of a nice retirement but instead he has chosen to share his collection with the world. Give credit where credit is due!

I’m going to attempt to once again, clear up some “concerns” people have.

    First, the preface:

I volunteer at the PHoF about 25 hours a week. My daughter is a technician there.

I am BY NO MEANS speaking on behalf of Tim or the PHoF in an official capacity. The following is my personal opinion and I haven’t cleared anything I’m about to post with anyone prior to posting.

    ++++++=+

The Pinball Hall of Fame is not the best name for this facility. It has a built in “stigma” that gives people an incorrect assumption of what they will discover upon entry.

The PHoF official website is pinballmuseum.org. This is also confusing because many people confuse us with the former Banning Museum of Pinball.

The vast majority of people that post and frequent Pinside probably own (or have owned) at least one pinball machine and know with absolute certainty what a royal pain in the ass they are. Even if you only one one. The PHoF has over 400 coin op machines in the building.

The PHoF is open every day of the year and has been for several years (only closure being forced due to pandemic). Even when moving from Trop location to current, the place closed one night and opened in he very next morning in new location.

This concept can be credited 100% to Tim
Arnold and the Pinball Collector's Club of Las Vegas. Is Tim the friendliest, most approachable, and charismatic guy you’ve ever met? No. Absolutely not. He’s abrupt, loud, sometimes rude, and definitely frugal. He’s also someone I have the utmost respect for, superior admiration for his integrity, and astounding knowledge of pinball and electronics in general. I am thankful every day that my daughter is privileged enough to call him her mentor.

The PHoF has a metric ton of non-functioning games on the floor. This is true. From Whoa Nellie to Fathom to Jurassic Park Data East to, at present, Addams Family and Indiana Jones TPA. These and many more games have issues. Problems that need to be fixed by a qualified technician. Like Tim. Like my daughter. Like Louis. The PHoF has about 5 technicians on staff I think (including managers). Do the math.

The goal of any repair on any machine at the PHoF is to keep the games working and operational and able to take Quarters.

You can play a vast majority of the games in the PHoF. The others can be viewed, free of charge, any time that the PHoF is open. There is no entry fee.

ALL AGES ARE WELCOME. This is NOT a 21+ facility. No alcohol is served and there are no gambling machines.

NO SALES TAX is charged on Gift Shop items because the PHoF is a 501(c)3 NonProfit Entity.

There is Free Parking for all PHoF guests. The PHoF does not sell spaces for stadium events and event parking in general is not permitted at any time.

There is no smoking (cigarettes or other) of any kind allowed inside.

No One (children nor adults) is allowed to run in the facility.

Soda/bottled water/Tea/Etc (non-alcoholic) are sold via a vending machine. Drinks are NEVER permitted to be placed on a machine. Stools and chairs are provided.

Finally, regarding masks. The state of NV at the time if this writing, still has a mask mandate.

Everyone above age 3 must wear a mask that covers mouth and nose at all times when inside the facility. Free masks are available at the gift shop/front desk.

The PHoF is, in my opinion, is a place you’re lucky to experience once in your life. I’m extremely fortunate that I get the pleasure of experiencing it 3-4 days a week.

    Thank you, @timarnold.

I have 3, and even if I have them up and running well, anytime some people come over and start playing, one or two usually get a failure of some kind, every time. Then I have to spend time fixing them. I can't imagine 400 of them.

    Quoted from prl867:

Looking forward to going to the new place, haven't been yet.

I've really enjoyed your contributions to this thread. I've never been to the PHoF, but I enjoy reading about it.

I've been on Pinside for about 10 years now and I can remember complaints/suggestions about how Tim runs things for that entire time, so I've learned about how Tim is. And in the end Tim has "won". No matter how I'd have done it different, he's been running a successful business all this time. Not only successful, arguably the most successful "arcade" in the world.

Thanks for your continued shares and I enjoy the photos.

    Thank you, timarnold.

I don't know if this really "clears anything up" as much as restates the criticism people have. Trying not to beat a dead horse, but Tim's (or anyone's) attitude and behavior is entirely within their control. While we certainly all have our moments of frustration in life, when the general perception of you is "abrupt, loud, sometimes rude", that should be cause for concern. I know if someone (let alone people I've only met one or twice at my workplace or my employees) were to describe me that way, it would give me some pause for self-reflection and consideration of how I'm behaving and perceived.

I think everyone understands that keeping this many games running basically 24/7 is almost impossible, but this is the business model you've chosen. Not all of us can spend 25 hours a week here. When you say you have X number of games, but 15% of them are down...yes, you can still have fun and play pinball, but it doesn't make it not disappointing when there is something you wanted to play that isn't working, which has happed to me on every visit. I think "do the math" would be fair criticism to offer as well from the patrons of the PHoF - is 5 techs enough when the constant feedback is disappointment at broken games?

I think we can all agree that it's a hell of an effort to run a place like this, and lord knows I'm not crazy enough to do it, but I think the constant deflection of any criticism is what tends to rub people the wrong way. You have an open forum like this for feedback, but it isn't really seriously considered or acted on, which again, Tim's place, Tim's rules, but don't be shocked when you keep getting the same feedback and wondering why.

To quote I believe Abe Lincoln, "You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time"

I don't know about anyone else but I would love to have a place like this near me that I could visit anytime. There's what, 200 something games there?
You can't find something to play? If one's not working, move on to next game. Pretty simple.

Don't let the naysayers get you down Tim!!

Um, it's "fool," not "please," and Lincoln never said it, it seems. https://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/12/11/cannot-fool/

Which admittedly does not detract from your point. However, as a similarly grumpy old man, I doubt Tim lets much get him down. He's an independently wealthy guy doing what he loves, day in day out, with no boss, answering only to himself. I find it is those with artificially sunny dispositions who take it hard when life kicks them in the nuts. And us crabby guys don't feel as crabby inside as others think they perceive. It's related to RBF.

I believe it was George W. Bush who stated "fool me can't get fooled again"
