    Quoted from Rascal_H:

Personally wanted to see Todd win. I did like his concession speech though.

    Classic Todd!

Strange that the percentage isn’t shown for some categories. I’m curious to see the landslide that Kaneda won by.

    #303 64 days ago
    Quoted from DanQverymuch:

Why are they shown for any?

Maybe so people can see what they are up against and try and improve for next year, and maybe win an award ?

Like "Favorite Pinball Location" I have a plan for my place that is a sure win for next year.

Todd deserves a lifetime achievement award!

    Quoted from chuckwurt:

Oktoberfest is a 2018 game. Haha.

What the hey "Chuck"?! Per the vote breakdowns, it appears my Oktoberfest picks were placed in the correct TWIPY year afterall.

It's no wonder some pinheads are contending that a Deep State is conspiring to keep this deserving game down.

    Quoted from romulusx:

Do you have a butter Jesus?

    Alas ... no longer sadly.

Weird. My bad. This game was at pincinnati in 2018 maybe they let it be a 2019 game as it came out so late like stranger things this year?

I've been very hesitant to release the percentages for categories that are not specifically manufacturer/game related as I worry they could discourage people that are providing good free content, but didn't get that many votes. But this year I've been contacted by enough people that did not make the top 3 and want to know where they finished up - I think we've reached a point in the TWIPYs where it is ok to release the percentages for all categories.

2.8% PB_Undesirables - You know what? I'm honored. Anybody who voted for me knew I had no chance of winning and it's humbling that even come in 10th. I appreciate the hell out of all the kind words I received over my 3 years streaming. I'm already anticipating I won't make the cut next year, guys like dontpanicflip are doing great things. I'd really like to think that those of us who stream do it for the love of the hobby and while any sort of recognition feels great, it's absolutely not why we do it.

Looking at the numbers, I noticed a lot of winners don't have a majority, just a plurality. I think implementing Instant Runoff Voting (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting) would be the easiest way to increase the number of people happy with the results.

Here's a video explaining how this type of voting works:

    #310 64 days ago
    Quoted from Who-Dey:

Yeah that was pretty funny and another thing he was in the running for best competitive pinball player with Bowen Kerrins and Keith Elwin. He doesn't even play competitive pinball, WTF?
He's a decent player but he couldn't hold Bowen or Keith's jock strap! Not even in the same league as those guys!

Just as information, he does play competitive pinball -- at a minimum, he competed at Pinburgh 2019, and pretty sure he competed in Pinburgh 2018 too.

    #311 64 days ago

I'd like to see the geographically specific categories (location, league) weighted against the population densities of their areas.

For instance, Titletown loses to Logan, when it has more pins than Logan's pins and vids combined? Obviously a population density thing.

It's nothing more than 'who mobilizes the voters...'

Such categories make little sense when they are almost entirely 'locals' things -- leagues fall under this too.

It's much like the pinside ratings... anything done by sheer popular vote that doesn't have great equal sampling is doomed to be nothing more than 'who can stuff the box'

    #313 64 days ago
    Quoted from DanQverymuch:

    Obviously a population density thing.

Obviously, but is that a problem and if so what's the solution? I think if you're trying to look at the TWIPY's as an empirical measurement of goodness you're doing it wrong. It's just a big happy popularity contest. If it's to be an examination of what's "best" then you have to put together some number of "experts" to decide a winner. So the choice is to be called a popularity contest or to be called a bunch of elitists. Neither situation is going to make everybody happy. If someone else wants to start another award show based on the elitist model, great! Both systems have merit, but people will complain either way.

    #314 64 days ago

I can't think of anything to complain about.

Didn't watch it live (because I forgot about it), but it was an entertaining way to spend about an hour and change.

The pre-recorded videos were really fun to watch. Did all contestants pre-record a video or just the top 3 or just the winner?

    #315 64 days ago
    Quoted from pbu:

Obviously, but is that a problem and if so what's the solution?

I just told you the solution, do weighting of the votes against population density, or even plain population. Simple arithmetic.

An unrealistic example might clarify: If 1% of a million people near one arcade vote for that arcade, and somehow 50% of the 10,000 near another vote for that one, the first is still a 2 to 1 winner, when the second is clearly more popular among its target customer base. Fifty times more popular! Yeah, of course no way would 50% vote, but that's just an example. Reality would be much, much closer, but the point remains.

And don't think I'm shilling for Titletown, Pinball Palace would have blown it out of the water using this metric. (Do they have a door greeter who asks if you want to go upstairs, or what?)

    Quoted from pbu:

If someone else wants to start another award show based on the elitist model, great!

    Elitist? What?

    #316 64 days ago
    Quoted from DanQverymuch:

I just told you the solution: do weighting of the votes.

Stern and JJP just disclosed pin production totals to Jeff at TWiP. Jeff weighed the vote percentages versus the production numbers and has a new listing of winners in the various game categories. No need to go through all the individual categories, because after factoring in its low production number (mainly due to the lack of any pro model of the game) Elvira's House of Horrors swept all categories except Best Rules and Best Playfield Gameplay and Layout (which still went to JP, but at a much closer margin). Speculation is that once Lyman Sheats completes the code for EHoH it's rules will easily rival JP's.

Of course, none of this actually happened (we all know Stern will never release production figures). But I had to come up with some rationale as to why most of you don't seem to recognize just how good a game Elvira is. In truth, I voted with my wallet when I purchased an Elvira LE.

Yeah, I understand this is a tall order I'm about to suggest, but I actually think it would be great to have both a people's choice AND an industry award for pinball. We have a people's choice in the TWIPys, but not really an Oscars of pinball. I don't believe that either are foolproof systems, but I certainly think there's room for both. However...that would require that someone have a lot of gumption and time on their hands.

Speaking of which, I honestly don't know how Jeff does everything he does. He maintained a tradition we've come to expect and appreciate when the TWIPys were in danger of lapsing, all while continuing to provide content for one of the most active news websites in our industry. Cary and Imoto did an incredible job filling some big shoes as hosts. They exceeded my expectations with their professionalism and kept a healthy pace during the ceremony so that it didn't drag on. The TWIPy committee of Steve Bowden, Joel Reeves, William Oetting, Lloyd Olsen, Zach Meny, Greg Bone, and Jeff Patterson, also did a great job of honing the awards from the prior years. What an incredibly time-consuming and thankless job for all of these volunteers. Sincerely, thank you. Each of you.

As some have stated, the TWIPys are in good fun, and while there's truth to that I think it goes beyond fun. It's important to have recognition within hobbies and industries in order to showcase the great work that people are doing within a particular area of interest. Without taking anything away from the winners, unanimous agreement with the final outcomes are impossible and somewhat beside the point. However, friendly competition is healthy and keeps status quo at bay. Someone will, one day, dethrone the current king of design, Keith Elwin. One day, the reigning ambassador and coolest cat in pinball, Jack Danger, will meet a cooler cat. And one day...one day...maybe Nick and I will give Jonathan Joosten a run for best publication.

In the meantime, keep up the great work, Jeff and co. Nick and I were so honored to be finalists for the TWIPys Favorite Publication for our work on
Coin-Op Carnival, and completely humbled to hear Jonathan's acceptance speech. That meant a lot to us, Jonathan. We're long time readers of yours, too:

    ryan (resized).jpg

Here's to many more years of recognition and reaching for new heights, for creators, for organizers, and for voters.

    Sincerely,
    Ryan Claytor
    1/2 Coin-Op Carnival

I completely with you on the idea of having both a people's choice award and an Oscar of Pinball - the question is who's the academy? I volunteer!

The most amazing takeaway from these full results being posted... some people actually gave Cosmic Carnival a vote in categories OTHER than best art???

    #320 64 days ago
    Quoted from pin2d:

    Best Animations and Display
23.6% Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory (Jersey Jack Pinball)

Should just change this award to "biggest screen."

Basic fan layout, cradle up & time out a few modes to reach a massively lucrative multiball, zzz. I mean sure, the code will probably eventually be great. Just not in 2019.

Yeah, looks like everyone who bought one voted for it. Or a couple fun-loving trolls. I could imagine bangerjay's ballot being CC all the way down.

    Quoted from Fytr:

In my opinion, most of those categories that you didn't show percentages for should probably not exist at all. They are either pointlessly divisive or will likely always having the same winners year after year due to realities of this smallish community. Maybe use a different format where there is no one "winner" but a longer list of names worthy of special recognition.

I've suggested before that those categories should disqualify the winner for the next one or two years. It's no fun for anyone except Jack & Pinburgh to watch Jack & Pinburgh win in a landslide every year. What's more fun and more reflective of the diversity of the hobby, one guy winning five trophies, or one guy winning a couple, and a few others winning one each? Spread the love. Not everything in life has to be cutthroat winner-take-all. It would introduce a little uncertainty into the non-Jack years. And uncertainty is fun.

This is a horrible idea. Are you from the everybody gets a trophy generation?

And how many people received their BKSoR topper in 2019?

Shouldn't the homebrew machine be finished first before it can win an award?

I knew someone would reply with that. Which is why I said:

In a pure competition with objective performance, yes, the "winner" should always win. This isn't football. It's a celebration of the hobby. Are you really gonna go full "trophy boomer" over a popularity contest?

Yeah I'm really going to do that. If they were to start doing what you suggested I would never watch the Twippy's again because that would be a total waste of time.

This is a fun award show and not some “cutthroat competition”

The winner gets some recognition for a job well done.

To think you can’t vote for the best option each year is ridiculous

You know what makes me not want to watch? Categories with the same winner every year. Different strokes, I guess.

Selfishly, as a viewer, I dislike knowing the winner in advance. I wouldn’t watch any sport like that.

    Quoted from Timfenske11:

Shouldn't the homebrew machine be finished first before it can win an award?

It is crazy how long the committee discussed this category, it is so hard to define! We reached out to all the nominees to see if they thought their creation should be up for the award this year, as they only get one year to be eligible.

As I've mentioned a few times on different mediums, next year we're going to have a document which will define what is necessary to be eligible for each category (though I think the home-brew category may still be a little dicey as it is a tough category).

But Committee already discussed next year defining things more clearly - example: that someone has to play in 5 competitions that year to be up for competitive player, or have 5 podcasts that year to be eligible, or 5 original YouTube content vids that year, and to better define the website category and Rookie of the Year and other categories.

It isn't perfect but we're working to improve every year!! Feedback from the community has helped a ton with that, so thank you all

This is an award show to show recognition to the people who do great work like say Keith Elwin did on Jurassic Park, Chis Franchi with Munsters art etc. Now wouldnt that suck if Jurassic Park and Munsters art got overlooked because those two guys got awards last year?

Wouldn't it suck if Elwin makes another smash hit next year and doesnt win any awards because he won so many the last two years with IMDN and JP? Wouldn't it suck if Zombie Yetti makes a killer TMNT art package but some artist that sucks beats him out?

People like to vote because it makes them a part of all of this so if they cant vote they will just lose interest and not watch, especially if you have people winning awards that dont deserve to win them. I have an idea, how about we vote on who should be the hosts of the show also?

There are some things that is a popularity contest and they dont deserve to win, it even happened last nite a couple of times but you cant really stop all of that. And then you got a catagory like best YouTube channel with Todd Tuckey, SDTM, and Papa Pinball where they literally ALL deserve to win but only one does. That's unfortunate for sure but Todd Tuckey knows that everyone loves and appreciates his work even if he doesnt win.

Leave the Twippy's alone and let's vote on the hosts!

Todd you are awesome dude, read my last paragraph in my post above. You are a legend to all of us pinheads and we love your videos. You just happen to be in the very toughest catagory that the Twippy's has. They should just have 3 winners in your catagory for real. Call it the "top three YouTube channels" or something.

No but they particular catagory is deserving of more than one winner because it's by far the toughest catagory they have and those 3 are all deserving.

I'm not even really saying they should change it but that catagory is a mother effer for sure and even 3rd place is a huge winner.

Red herring. Games are nominated, not people. I’m pretty sure JP won’t win anything next year.

Homebrew is by far the trickiest. When is a game "finished"? Should it have to be playable at a public event? There's a lot of questions to ask here. My only advice here would be to make a game ineligible for future years once it wins. I think this is the only category where such a rule is merited. To be clear, I don't think the designer should be ineligible, just the game.

Mr. Tuckey id much rather watch your informative videos then some new guy(s) giving their opinion about a game they like or dislike after 20 games on it. I learn nothing from that!

You were robbed but looking at the trend, you finished much higher than previous years. Pinball Palace in 2020 perhaps? Looking forward to another visit once it is safe to do so and the lockdown is lifted.

I dunno, I think I’m a pretty good competitive player.

Also I built a pinball machine in the public eye. ‍

Spaceballs, Metroid, and every other homebrew out there deserves a trophy. Perhaps you didn’t listen to my acceptance speech. ‍ ❤️
