So we tried launching a vote for the TWIPYs today but it turned into a slow and painful train wreck. Much debate over which games should be included, etc., and I realized that the free Survey Monkey will only let me see 100 votes and the $35 monthly charge only allows 1,000 votes for the month. So we are using a different polling service and restarting and NEED YOUR INPUT!

So FRESH start, which of these games should be included:

    Aerosmith
    Alien
    Attack From Mars Remake
    Batman '66
    Dialed In
    Houdini
    Guardians of the Galaxy
Lexi Lightspeed - Escape from Earth
    Pirates of the Caribbean
    Star Wars
    The Jetsons
    Thunderbirds
    Total Nuclear Annihilation

Thoughts on questions or breakouts of these:
Best Theme of the Year (based on theme ONLY)
    Best Theme Integration
    Best Sound/Callouts
    Best Artwork
    Best Rules/Code
    Best Lightshow
    Best Toys/Gimmicks
    Best Playfield Layout and Gameplay
    Best Display/Animations
    Best Game of the Year

    Thoughts on additional questions?
    Favorite pinball podcast? (write in)
    Favorite Twitch streamer? (write in)
Favorite pinball YouTube channel? (write in)
    Favorite new mod (write in)
    Favorite code update (write in)
    ...

Open to any and all ideas, let's get this thing ready for a do-over.

    From frolic in different thread:

    Quoted from frolic:

    Aerosmith
    Alien
    Dialed In
    Guardians of the Galaxy
Lexi Lightspeed - Escape from Earth
    Star Wars
    The Jetsons
    Total Nuclear Annihilation
Batman66 (started shipping late December 2016, January 2017)
When I used to do a music radio show, we cut off the annual tracks at Nov 30. So, annual awards were based on music released from Dec 1 of previous year to Nov 30 of this year. So something like Batman66 would be part of the current year's consideration.

Let's try to make this better than The Dundies:

Thanks for all the input, keep it coming.

Nothing is better than the dundies. Good luck buddy!

    #6 6 years ago

Remakes should be excluded from consideration, IMHO. Only machines that the public got hands-on for the first time ever in 2017 should be eligible.

    #7 6 years ago

    Not a very auspicious start.

    #8 6 years ago

    meh

this was all started due to the crowning of TNA in the other online article as the best game of 2017 so it honestly failed out of the gate with a reactionary desire to crown something else (I noticed quickly that TNA was last in your poll list which was strange), then the inadvertent? leaving off of a few key games (Lexy) showed further personal biases, then the poll system had issues of locking some people out.

Probably best to just chalk it up as a failed attempt and come back next year with a less biased/ better thoughtout poll in place.

    #9 6 years ago
    Quoted from DngrWillRobinson:

    Not a very auspicious start.

Rest assured it won't happen again. After this debacle, several people in our organization were fired including our Director of Polls, Director of TWIPY Awards, and VP of New Ideas.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

then the inadvertent? leaving off of a few key games (Lexy) showed further personal biases

I left off Lexy by mistake and is part of the reason we're redoing the poll. That and Survey Monkey was limited to only 1,000 voters. Also we've lined up an interview with Gerry at Multimorphic to explain more about the P3 platform.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

I noticed quickly that TNA was last in your poll list which was strange

It was in alphabetical order dude.

    #10 6 years ago

Here is what I'm thinking after receiving input from several others - the games that are eligible will be those that were/are shipping in 2017, and exclude remakes. That leaves:

    Aerosmith
    Alien
    Batman '66
    Dialed In
    Guardians of the Galaxy
Lexi Lightspeed - Escape from Earth
    Star Wars
    The Jetsons
    Total Nuclear Annihilation

    The questions will be:

Best Theme of the Year (based on theme ONLY)
    Best Theme Integration
    Best Sound/Callouts
    Best Artwork
    Best Rules/Code
    Best Lightshow
    Best Toys/Gimmicks
    Best Playfield Layout and Gameplay
    Best Display/Animations
    Best Game of the Year

    Favorite pinball podcast? (write in)
    Favorite Twitch streamer? (write in)
Favorite pinball YouTube channel? (write in)
    Favorite new mod (write in)
    Favorite code update (write in)

Any suggestions or changes? Let me know!

    I thought BM66 delivered in 2016?

    #13 6 years ago
    Quoted from Whysnow:

    I thought BM66 delivered in 2016?

It was in December. There was comment in the other thread about awards 'of the year' cutting off on Nov 30th, so that something that tails in at the very end doesn't get screwed due to lack of exposure. So BM66 being in the 2017 list makes decent sense.

    #14 6 years ago

Code update could probably be done as a list of options rather than a write-in, as I'm assuming the list is relatively finite and I'd be a bit concerned that a lot of voters may not have the version numbers memorized (but I am biased as I hate compiling write-in responses so I avoid it whenever practical).

Could do best pinball show and/or best tournament, using conditions (size threshold/PAPA circuit) if you want to provide a list, write-in if not.

    #15 6 years ago

If you make the list TOO big some people won't bother to vote just because of the size of the survey.

    #16 6 years ago
    Quoted from pin2d:

How dare you use alphabetical order when you know TNA would be last! lol

I could see favorite code update question getting a little convoluted...

Lol. Yep, in these cases Reverse Alphabetical Order is preferred.

taken in the context of the TWIRPYs being created due to the other article, the omission of some other key games, and the most logical formant for an annual poll would be chronological from most recent release to least... the biases were pointed out.

As I said before, all polls are biased... some are just more clearly biased.

    #20 6 years ago
    Quoted from epthegeek:

If you make the list TOO big some people won't bother to vote just because of the size of the survey.

The form can be designed as drop-down boxes. That would cut down on visible size but still allow selecting choices. Would look cleaner and like less of a time-sink.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

Just randomize the answer choices, as it avoids any perception of gamesmanship. Google Forms supports this for many of the question types (just click on the three vertically stacked dots at the bottom of the question and check "shuffle option order"). And that's it, (perceived) problem solved.

    Is voting closed?

    #22 6 years ago
    Quoted from Nevus:

    Is voting closed?

We're doing a new poll, should be ready to go in the coming days.

I'm planning to use Google Forms unless anyone else has a better suggestion?

    What is TWIPY short for?

    #24 6 years ago

Not sure of the y (Yearly?) but it’s TWIP= This Week In Pinball

    #25 6 years ago
    Quoted from Pinball-is-great:

    What is TWIPY short for?

    *T*his *W*eek *I*n *P*inball *Y*early awards.

Steve Bowden of Fun With Bonus came up with the name.

    #26 6 years ago

The TWIPYies are a great gig - remember me for your consideration in best Twitch Streamer

    All looks good pin2d!

    #27 6 years ago

A negative part of Google Forms - in order to limit it to 1 vote per person, the voters have to have a Google account. Another option that wouldn't require a sign in is to require an email address which would help me weed out obvious fakes or repeat voters.

I think both would be preferable to allowing people to vote as many times as they want. Which option would be least annoying?

    #28 6 years ago

Leaning towards making voters have a Google account. It is free and would eliminate any duplicate votes to ensure the integrity of the voting system.

    Quoted from pin2d:

I have 4 different google accounts. (They are free and I use them all for different things)

Just pointing out that having the google account does not really ensure integrity.

I honestly would just make a different poll thread for each question on here. That at least helps avoid double voting and also makes it very simple since people here seem to liek to vote in polls.

Yeah I have a couple as well. I'm more concerned with someone voting like 100+ times. Though really, it isn't like we're giving away a free pinball machine to the winners or anything.

Which pinball machine - game of the year or any category winner?

I meant we're NOT giving away big prizes, so I'm less worried about ballot stuffing. But still want to avoid it as much as possible.

    Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    #34 6 years ago

Google authentication is the most painless (on your end) and will avoid asking people to submit email addresses (which, in my experience, makes some people suspicious). It isn't perfect protection but it is low barrier for all involved to comply with and should eliminate concerns about scripted stuffing efforts. Just declare it is required in the voting announcement so no one is blindsided and you're covered (probably will still get some complaints, so just expect that).

    #35 6 years ago
    Quoted from DennisK:

probably will still get some complaints, so just expect that

I'd hate to get complaints, so far everything has run so smoothly with this

    #36 6 years ago

We've had more complaints about our various just-for-fun tournament approaches than we've ever received regarding our podcast commentary. People take their polls super-serious!

    #37 6 years ago

Whichever survey tool you finalize on, can you pick one that displays live results?

    Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Leaning towards no... We may try to do a live TWIPY Awards show and wouldn't want to ruin any surprises

    #40 6 years ago

The game of the year! Should be Dialed In!

    #41 6 years ago

Ok everyone we are locked and loaded and ready to launch the TWIPY Awards voting tomorrow! Again! Thanks for the help and input.

Man what did the Twip crew due to Hilton?

It has been rumored that we here at TWIP headquarters have a personal bias against TNA.

We here at TWIP headquarters have also talked to Spooky (Charlie) about making TNA our first NIB pin purchase (waiting to decide until we play it at a nearby location that has one on order).

So we believe the rumors of bias to be unfounded.

TWIP World Headquarters, making or breaking pinball sales with a swipe of their pen.

    #46 6 years ago

Why wouldn't we want this to be like the Dundies? I would like to win bushiest beaver award, please. Or most time spent in prison.

    #47 6 years ago
    Quoted from Matesamo:

    TWIP World Headquarters

You should see it, it looks really similar to Apple's HQ.

The voting is live now, I started a thread this morning that I'm trying to get "stickied": https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-2017-twipy-pinball-awards-live-awards-show-vote-now

Here is the direct link to vote: https://goo.gl/forms/5tUPMcGcVPiZe0Eo2

Thanks again for all the input.

    #48 6 years ago

Something's wrong with your poll, I can only vote once.
