I’ve decided that rating a pin has become useless. It should be eliminated. Too many haters and too many fanboys...or too many companies trying to sway the vote. It should be done.

Ok. I get it. But this is something that has become a problem. I love pinside for those helping others, but don’t love it for the polarity. Maybe I need to take a break. After 15 years...maybe it’s done.

A lot of people simply have a lot of opinions, and not everyone agrees with each other's opinions.

If you're able to keep things fun and light, and can avoid some of the heavily opinionated threads, then you'll probably be able to have a good time.

Agreed. But, maybe it’s time to take a step
Back. Those that are very opinionated have seemed to take over those that truly want to
help the hobby. It’s changed. Instead of helping out with problems, they are more interested in promoting their favorite product/company.

Our hobby has grown big time so there are more new members with different opinions and old school pinsiders like you and me should know by now how things are flowing.

For sure. We can't allow these 100 games to spread the Coronavirus and I agree the list should be shut down and these games isolated for the foreseeable future.

    #20 8 days ago

I don't look at it as much as I used to, but I still love the Pinside top 100, and I still wish they could also start a sub category for arcade games.

Yes, I know other sites already does that, but they suck. Pinside is the best site for games period. (and the characters here are very entertaining, and/or very helpful).

    #21 8 days ago

People are actually very helpful and nice on this forum as a whole. Especially when compared to other forums I have frequented over the years. We should try and look at the positive and take what good we can. The top 100 is a little funny but I'm glad it's there.

    #22 8 days ago

You seem to be very pessimistic about it. People tend to get out of things what they are looking for.

If you need to take a break, do it. Maybe you just need a xanax and new high score...I don't know. Whatever it is...you do you.

I can assure you, there are tons of great people on pinside who are nice, helpful, fun, generous, and well-meaning.

    #23 8 days ago

The top 100 is fine it just needs to be weighted differently and have say a min of 500 ratings to be included. This way you have a real sampling volume that makes sense. I am sure I am not the first one to bring this up and it cant be that hard to implement? Come on Pinside make the change!!

    #24 8 days ago

He's right. It should be shit down! My favorite game is rated way too high. Thunderbirds is OVER-represented.

    #25 8 days ago

There's a top 100 list? Never knew or cared about it. Worry about what you like and not what everyone else likes, heck look at my collection.....LOL.

Okay Einstein. You just stated an empty statement. Please elaborate your opinion and give some depth to this thread.

You also said like 2 times it is time for a time-out. Is that a promise?

Don’t ever mind strongly opinionated. I like reading all the comments on ratings rather than just a number, but do so on both IDPB and pinside. Let’s me know what to expect on a game. Don’t really care where it’s ranked, just what people feel about it. Pros and cons. It’s very easy to spot a fanboy, a hater, and a balanced view. I focus on the balanced view.

Also agree that going for technical problem threads avoids a lot of the less than desirable “I have a point of view and you are going to hear it” threads.

For sure in some threads people just like to hear themselves talk and get a rise out of people. Pinside thru it’s ignore button let’s me keep them from doing that.

    #29 8 days ago

Lol, it’s unbelievable how much stress and grief the top 100 manages to bring to some people. Yeah, taking a break is probably a really, really good idea for you. Sounds like it’s long overdue.

I respect your ratings but man you are wayyyyyy off based on how I feel about those games. We are all different so just enjoy your games and don’t worry about why people don’t think the same way you do.

Here's a novel idea OP: The next time your cursor (or finger if using a mobile device) is hovering over the "Top 100", just don't click (or tap) it!

It’s cancel culture run amok. People don’t like something for whatever personal reason and feel because they don’t like it should be canceled for everyone else rather than them just not looking at it. An odd perspective to say the least, but one that has been growing the past few years.

People don’t even understand the real purpose of this list. It’s not to be the Rosetta Stone of pinball rankings; it’s to amuse, and also drive traffic to pinside which it is VERY successful at.

A partner suggested I do this about 17 years ago for my site (make a ranking/price guide page), and I brushed it off. It was obviously a great idea.

The top 100 is just a reference page, it blows my mind how many people take it personally. It does make me chuckle how many times I hear people refer to their top 10 games (and it is 4 months old).. I agree 100%, the weighing of the statistics is completely off for this ever to represent an accurate picture. The biggest offender is time followed by the availability and cost of the game... How can TZ with 1372 votes on a game almost 3 decades old sit behind JP with 466 votes and a life span of 8 months? Easy answer, social dynamics. Everyone who buys one feels compelled to give it the highest ratings I am guilty as well.. Like it or not when you spend 8-10K on a Pin human nature is to justify it, not only to our spouses (who has mastered this and if you have, start a "how-to" thread) but to the Pinside community as well.

Not that any of this matters, I built my life around numbers and find this stuff fascinating.

It would be cool to adjust the weighing by:
    1. Age:
New - this would tell you what was the hot sellers of the year
1-10 - this would tell you which one of those "new games" were actually good and not being justified purchases
10-20 - this would be interesting to see as WPC ages
20-30 - the shift of the old school pinheads who loved EM to ESS and SS (that would show something)
30 plus - really, 30 years old and we still talk about them, this deserves more than a list!!!!

    2. availability
This would have to be an extrapolation of (Production run) (Year's produced) (attrition value)

    3. ***Waiting period before they can be weighed against the list (like the hall of fame, there is always a waiting period since the most recent players will always win, it's about being remembered later not now. even if it was only 1 year, it would make a huge difference (maybe have them but highlight them as rookies)

just some thoughts while I am locked up through another week...

    Cheers

    John

Haha...man I haven’t clicked that in a loooong time. Good to see Stern JP in the Top 5 because that’s definitely where it belongs. Seems like a noob list to me. After many years in the hobby, you know what you like, so why should it bother you?

    #41 8 days ago

When I was living in an apartment I enjoyed playing foosball in bars and pinball on location. Once I purchased my house in 1993 every time I played pinball I looked at it from the standpoint of "is this a game I must own?" I have hunted down and purchased every one of my must-own games. So my personal top ten of all time are ten of the games I have. (Some of my games, like Baywatch, Barb Wire and X-files, were opportunity buys and were not must-own games.) It doesn't matter to me how others rate pins or where my games are on the Pinside Top 100, because I think it's great that different people have different tastes.

Some games that just missed being must-owns to me are MM (I like AFM better and they are too similar), FH and Getaway.

I think it's IMS (Irritable Male Syndrome) or LOW T. Seems pretty common around these parts.

The top 100 is pretty accurate overall. I disagree with the placement of some of the pins on the list, but I can't really argue any of their current relative positions. Sure, newer games are going to get a lot of bias since that's what most people play, but some of those newer ones are certainly the classics of tomorrow. Older pins are in the top 100 ... many classic Bally and Stern machines are on the list ... the System 11 pins are well represented. We can certainly nitpick their positions on the list, but things will straighten out once the novelty of the newer pins wears off and people form more rational judgements.

My biggest disagreement with the list is that AFM should be #1 vs. MM since sci-fi is sooooooo much better than dragons and medieval stuff ... and that's a fact too, not opinion . Also, how in the hell are Quicksilver and Stargazer listed significantly higher than Seawitch and Nine Ball ???

One final note, this list doesn't impact price that much if at all. Were that the case, I'd be able to pick up those mid to late 80s Gottlieb pins for nothing .

Agreed. Despite the smoke and confusion and various biases, I find the Top 100 to be a fair indication/accurate ranking of overall quality as far as layout; rules; enjoyability; cohesion of design; implementation of theme.
