The artwork was a serious pain in the arse.

NOS 3 pieces of side art, scanned, placed back together, cleaned up and color corrected.

Had to sort of estimate where SIMPSONS letters went because the scanned pieces are just blue with no overlap.

Scanned and reworked the marquee as well.

I didn't actually have a Simpsons game to work with, just a cabinet i built using the same specs as a Turtles i previously built. This is the HARD way to do it, i would much rather have the game on hand.

Notice one of the corners got smacked. Happened while moving it. Fixed it up and it will be covered by the single piece of side art.

Using a Jamma harness with extension for player 3 and 4.

Control panel all wired up. NOS 8 way leaf joysticks and NOS microswitch buttons.

New speaker, fan, light fixture, new switching power supply, coin doors and boxes.

I'm using a 25" CRT i got from a bulk buy. Changing out the caps and the flyback. Hoping it works after that.

    Quoted from shacklersrevenge:

Looks Nice. My friend and I played this when it first came out, cost about $20 bucks to get to the end...I've always been fond of it, have it downloaded on xbox360.
What is your monitor situation? I'm rebuilding a Gretzky 3D Hockey and the last piece I need is a standard res monitor. I tried getting one of those hdmi boards and tried hooking up to an lcd, but the image was jumpy a little, couldn't get it to work right.

    Time for T-molding.

Start at the bottom, a little glue and a couple staples to keep it in place.

Rubber mallet with a cloth taped on it to keep it from damaging the T-molding.

Small cuts on the inside edge to bend it around tight angles.

Some very tight angles on this sucker.

    #17 6 years ago

Yeah, they all looked terrible form the factory, the colors never matched.

    Quoted from ReplayRyan:

Looks like it's going to be better than new already. One continuous sheet of side art vs the multi-piece (often multi-colored) from the factory.

    #18 6 years ago

Almost there. Used the excess blue vinyl for the sides of the control panel, what do you think? Blue or original black there?

    IMG_9778 (resized).JPGIMG_9778 (resized).JPG
    IMG_9779 (resized).JPGIMG_9779 (resized).JPG

    black (resized).jpgblack (resized).jpg

    #24 6 years ago

Yeah, i know but even the gradients didn't match. All blue was an artistic choice

    Quoted from hailrazer:

They were a fade of color from a greenish tint on bottom to bluer on top. That was on purpose, it's not supposed to be one color of blue
That being said, good looking machine the OP has here

    #26 6 years ago

So what do you guys think? Black or blue? I think i'm leaning black to emphasize the cool shape of the cabinet.

Well, for my Turtles in Time the art on the control panel seemed to make more sense with the continuation of the spirals.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

That picture had artwork on the side of the control panel. It's driving me crazy because I don't remember what it was but I know it was there.

Cool. Hope you can find it.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

    Nice!!!!
It was like their dog or the cooling towers it was something simple like that. Wish I still had that picture.

    #32 6 years ago

Any more votes for blue or black?

    #37 6 years ago

DOH! Yep, i see it now, oh well

Another reason to get the original game first.

    Quoted from Dr-Willy:

not that it really matters but the cabs changed around the time of simpsons and had two speakers up top, thats always been the way i tell converted turtles cabs apart from converted simpsons and sunset riders cabs.
Also i like the blue on the panel.

    #38 6 years ago

    Tied so far...

25" Hantarex Monitor. New flyback and Cap Kit. Works beautifully now.

Installed this heavy sucker. Had to remove the frame and mount the chassis elsewhere because it was too big.

    Left to do:

Cut new monitor glass and install.

Cut new glass for marquee. Fabricate marquee brackets. Install.

Wire up 2nd speaker for fantastic stern sound.

    Clamp down control panel.

    Vacuum out the inside.

    #56 6 years ago

    Sorry. not this one.

    Quoted from ASOA:

You left out one step.. Ship to my home game room.
    Outstanding Job!!!!!

    #57 6 years ago
    Quoted from dudah:

Always love seeing your quality work. Would love to see photos of your game room!

--Thanks man! Game room is a mess right now but i'll have it sorted out very soon, within the next 2 weeks--

    Quoted from sk8ersublime:

That's an awesome scratch build! Good work sir!

--Thanks, I don't recommend doing it this way LOL, the brackets are a real pain to fabricate.--

    Quoted from Linkage:

I miss your restores. This is much more common then your usual stuff, you moving on to Jamma games?

--I'm still restoring uber rare stuff but yeah, some of the common ones are finally getting some attention.

    #58 6 years ago

Nope, this beast is staying right here. Not even sure what it would go for if i did decide to sell it.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

Is this one being sold or going in your collection?

    #60 6 years ago

Thanks, its really not as hard as it looks

    Quoted from Richthofen:

Love your builds, PAC. Wish I had the talent to take something like this on, I’m all thumbs.

    Quoted from patrickvc:

Great job. I always liked this game

    Quoted from cosmokramer:

    Fantastic as always

    #67 6 years ago

    Well, it ain't cheap

I would definitely start with a complete game though. These are going for close to $1,000 nowadays in pretty much any condition.

To do this level of restoration or scratch build in this case.

$6-700 for a new or restored cabinet.
$3-400 for a decent, burn-free 25" monitor (unless the one it came with is is good shape) It could also be rebuilt. $150 or so for flyback and cap kit
New HAPP coin doors are about $125 each x 4. Stripped and powered coated old coin doors would run a bit less.
Side art is huge! Looking at about $120 for each side. There's a few different sets out there but they aren't very accurate.
NOS CPO: $300, but probably never find one. Repro CPOs are about $60.
    NOS leaf joysticks $70-$80 each x 4
New monitor glass and marquee glass $140
    Repro marquee translite $45
Jamma Harness, power cord, fan, isolation transformer. $100
Working PCB $350-$500. Unless you buy the game with it in it.
    New speakers $50
    New t-molding $25
    New leg levelers $20
    Switching power supply $40
    New buttons $20
    New colored coin inserts $20
    New monitor bezel $70
    Metal brackets: $50

I think that's about it. So around $3,000 plus a lot of TIME.

    Quoted from PAPPYBALL:

    Amazing!
So question can you give us dreamers a quick guestimate rundown on cost to do this build? Also instructions plz.
