When I got my STTNG it loaded two balls a couple of times. I just replace the opto in the trough and it fixed the problem. You might want the clean the opto bulbs first with alcohol.
The only other thing I would check out when purchasing a machine is check the circuit board below and around the batteries and check for acid damage.
