I had this same question a year ago. What I ended up doing after a bunch of searching was:
1. Filled the diviot with Bondo
a. taped around the area with blue tape and put in one coat
2. Sanded with 220 grit
a. very important to get a good smooth coat so you don't have to do much sanding.
Bondo doesn't sand easy.
b. Leave the tape on while you sand so you don't scratch anything you don't want
3. cover with the decal
a. got mine on ebay....ebay.com link: itm /300745639400?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4605d645e8
Since you just got it save the decal untill you shop it. Would be almost impossible to do with everything in the way. The bondo will hold without the decal unlike wood filler which crumbles after time(believe me I know
