Just installed LED's in the inserts of my Shadow. Tony Middendorf kindly came over last week to get me started. Watching his process helped me develop my own. I placed an order with PinballBulbs and love the results.

Anybody interested in a breakdown of everything I used? I have it broken down to bay or wedge, color and etc. I could put the breakdown here or create another thread. Might be best to put it here?

Breakdown for inserts used below. May make some changes when I receive orders from PinballBulbs and Cointaker. Changes I'm thinking about will be listed at the bottom of this page.

------------------------------------------------------------

THE SHADOW LEDS

NOTE: All LED's are from PinballBulbs.COM (PB) unless specified otherwise. Their LED's appear to be the same as Cointaker Super Brights with the addition of Clear or Frosted globes.

----------

INSERTS:

KHAN: (4) 44/47 - Green Frosted
LOCK: (3) 555 - Green Clear

PLAIN: (1) 555 - Warm White Frosted
SUPER JACKPOT: (1) 555 - Warm White Clear
SCENES: (6) 555 - Cool White Single (Pinball Life)

RED:

SCARF ROUND: (4) 555 - Red Clear

WHO KNOWS: (1) 555 - Warm White Clear
FINAL BATTLE: (1) 555 - Warm White Clear
START KHAN MULTIBALL: (1) 555 - Warm White Clear
BATTLEFIELD READY: (1) 555 - Warm White Clear
MINI-PLAYFIELD PLAIN: (10) 555 - Warm White Clear

YELLOW:
MONGOL: (4) 555 & (2) 44/47 - Cool White Single (Pinball Life)
SHADOW LOOP: (1) 44/47 – Cool White Clear

----------

GENERAL ILLUMINATION

(38) 44/47 - YET TO BE INSTALLED

------------------------------------------------------------

04/10/2013: Possible changes with next batch of LED's from PinballBulbs (PB) and Cointaker (CT).

WHITE:
MONGOL & PLAIN: (2) 555 - Warm White Clear + (1) 44/47 - Warm White Flex Super Bright (CT)
SCENES: (6) 555 - Cool White Frosted

DARK ORANGE:
SHOOT AGAIN: (1) 44/47 - Warm White Flex Super Bright (CT)

YELLOW:
SHADOW LOOP: (1) 555 - Cool White Flex Super Bright (CT)

------------------------------------------------------------

PHOTOS:

My goal for LED's in the inserts is to stay as close as possible to the look of incandescents, but brighter. The six white scene inserts will get an upgrade to brighter LED's from PinballBulbs. The ten plain inserts in the Battlefield are still incandescent's waiting for LED's to be installed when received. There are also a couple inserts running Cool White Clear that will be replaced with Warm White Clear when received with next order.

NOTE - 04/14/2013: I have not yet addressed General Illumination (GI) with LED's. I'm placing an order for more bulbs from PinballBulbs & Cointaker now. The only LED's installed at the point are (2) 2-LED Cool White CT bulbs in the left drop lane.

Pics posted. GI and Translite have not been LED'd yet.

Quoted from Nepi23:

MnHotRod, can you post pics of your Shadow, so we'll know how it will look like?

GI will be Cool White or Warm White.

Quoted from marsgnu:

Great, Thanks! Do you use led in your GI? Plastics colormatch or just warm white?

Not so sure about this for GI. I started to LED the GI on my Shadow and found the same thing you say here with all LED options from Cointaker. I then put in some frosted LED's from PinballBulbs and could see that their LED's are putting out much more light via 360 degree illumination onto the playfield. I need to place another order with them before I can be sure.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

LED's for GI's on Shadow are terrible. Way to dark. Really need the 360 illumination a bulb gives off, because there isn't enough GI's to make up the difference. LED's look good in the inserts tho. This is one of the cases, were LED's do not belong everywhere.

Can you post a pic from the front including the coin door and legs. Is the coin door also black nickel?

Quoted from Pinmeister:

Here is the picture of the black nickel gun with the chrome trigger.

I'm no expert on how well brass plating will wear. After seeing the ramp photos with brass plating, I'm tempted to try it out. A local shop advertises "hard gold" on their website. Haven't worked with them in a while. Maybe I'll call and ask about brass or hard gold plating.

Quoted from CaptainNeo:

any input on how well brass plating holds up with ball traffic?

#115 10 years ago

This may not be the greatest photo but here you see how much light the PinballBulbs Cool White Frosted throws onto the playfield versus a CT Premium above it, a CT Retro below it and a CT Double on the bottom.

Note the star rays you see on the premium, that is what you see on the playfield, not len's flare on the camera. Most of the light that appears to be thrown onto the playfield by the CT Double is lens flair.

Looking at your photo, it looks like the screw that holds down your mini-playfield should be changed to just a screw and lose the spacer. I would think that post would affect the rubbers ability to deflect the ball. Anybody else notice that post. Mine does not look like that.

Quoted from TZBen:

Had a stuck ball tonight in a rare spot (for my game)

EDIT: Maybe mine is non-stock as I see the hand screw style post in a couple other photos of the upper playfield.

Nice work. I need add these to mine.

Quoted from Aurich:

Here I took some quick pics for you.
