Quoted from ruzeo:

Who is buying these shadows with credit dots and worn sanctums for $6500 and why?

Times have really changed, haven’t they? I bought my Shadow in 2019 for $4500 with color DMD, Aurich package and no sanctum wear, and I felt like it was a reach! I sold it to a friend for $4k a few months later, to finance a pricy Indy Jones Adventure. When I listed it for $4,150, the price police paid me a visit, prompting me to turn off forum comments thereafter. It’s a really nice Shadow too! I bought it back 6 months later for $4200, with a few upgrades. Eventually I replaced all the plastics, coin door, gun handle, and bought new Mantis ramps. I added mylar before the sanctum sustained any wear. I would probably ask $7500-8k these days. It seems sanctum wear is more common than not, and credit dots could be a sign of a real problem or just something minor, which is usually my experience. Just a few years ago these were $3500 for a really nice example, but they are in high demand now. Every time I play mine, I remember why!

Dude, I bought my first shadow for $1800. Shadows used to be pretty hard to sell for anything over $2500. Todays prices for all pins is really just stupid.

What can I do to bling my gun handle? Black powder coat? Also on left side bolts heads stick out snd catch your finger. Normal? Looks like I have wrong screws. Where can I get correct security screw and nut?

If so done has a spare gun handle that’s already done Lmk. Thx

I bought mine for that a few months ago. It’s got a sanctum sticker I was told was added to prevent wear. Area is flush, and knowing the owner I believe it. Rest of the pf looks perfect. Also has colorDMD, upgraded speakers, powder coat, new back box, comet leds. Extremely clean all around. No credit dot.

For how fun this game is, it seemed like a good value these days, sadly.

Becuase Shadows without any of that are $8k+

Same people buying 15K toy stories and 10k addams I'd assume.

#10107 10 months ago

Shadows are more fun than a new Toy Story or Led Zepplin too… which are far more expensive. So still great value in my opinion.

Haha, times have seriously changed… $10k for an Addams will get you a blown out one with a bunch of wear

Shadow has always been a crazy undervalued game due to a shit translite, unobtainable parts at the time (Phurba shafts, battlefield kickers and plastic teeth) destroyed sanctums… the game was a route nightmare.. so many features that could break, and would break and render the game nearly unplayable for so long… It was pushed in the back or dumped for $1200. Once people started getting them in the home environment… fixing the issues… dialing it in.. alternate translite.. they realized how amazing the game truly was. Everybody says it.. but with the market trends on pinball… every game will continue to go up and up.. Shadow should be grabbed at 6k all day… if any pops up under 6… You better jump on it quick.. another year or 2… I wouldn’t be surprised if it starts commanding over 7-8k. I wouldn’t sell mine for $12k honestly.

The Shadow has been undervalued for years...really...DECADES. People have just started to wake up recently.

This game is great. It is a top 10 game for me. I have said it before, but if it were the same game with a matrix theme (or something of the like), it would be a 10-15k pin.

Tough choice. GZ is a terrific Stern, but you should be able to find one for the next few years without much trouble. A super nice Shadow is a keeper, imho. But, variety is a big deal in this hobby too, and limited space is a factor. Tough to beat the 90’s era pins! Again, tough call!

Xianex's Backglass just arrived today, it was relatively fast for overseas and he included some stickers for the delay, which was not an issue on my end. The quality and color is amazing, I'm very happy with the purchase.

I had the LED but for me it was too bright so I swapped it out for the LCD. Controversial opinions on which one is preferred.

He's in Poland, ill grab his link or just copy his name and Google search it may come up. He has 2 versions of this style. I love real backglass and he can print on the glass. So happy with it

This is all I'll say on this, one LED one LCD, I chose the LCD but it's up to you to decide which one you prefer. You can find plenty of threads why some like one over the other, my opinion is irrelevant and I don't want to drag The Shadow thread through the ColorDMD mud

Quoted from tiltmonster:

Your opinion matters! Great job posting examples of both versions. Both are great choices to upgrade the stock DMD, with pros and cons for each. LCD (I assume the top photo) is more customizable with a few different fonts, but costs a bit more and uses more energy. LED is more efficient, has more of the “dots” appearance, but is cheaper and the contrast between dots is vivid. I have a few LEDs and a few LCDs. Both are great, just depends which display you like for your particular game.

Thanks Bob! I am really glad you like it. There's actually a bit more to it... There are some bats that are visible when the artwork is illuminated from the back. Normally they are invisible. Also, the gem on the ring glows slightly depending on the viewing angle. Greetings from Poland! Xianek.

Thank you Krystian! You know it's ironic you mentioned that because last night when I was playing I noticed the bats and not the ring. That's crazy! I have no idea how you do that but I assume it's like your Munsters backglass video and pics, and how you can go to color from black and white, awesome stuff. I appreciate you popping in to the thread and I wish you the best from the States!

Going to replace both ramps. Anyone have a guide or tutorial. Does not look terrible but first time looks scary

#10136 10 months ago

Hey All,

Any thoughts of how to polish the gold ramps without replacing or replating?

#10137 10 months ago

Also, I have been working on an issue for over 2 years and maybe need to replace the board but don't want to. See the photo of the error for a Ground issue.

I changed the game to led's as it was playing fine prior to then and now 2 years without playing the game. It's time to put a little effort into the fix.

So... Here is the error photo.. All lights are working and the sound from flippers are working Credits are fine, but the start button will not engage the game play.

Any thoughts to where to start over?

One screw at a time, take pictures and use them to do it again in reverse (careful around the optos)

You have to remove the phurbas and after that it's pretty straightforward.

I assume it's referring to a short in the switch matrix, take a look at the wires associated with row 4 and see if you can find a short.

It's pretty simple. Shadow was the first game restoration/playfield swap I ever did. Take tons of pictures, videos for mechs you don't understand. You'll be okay.

A ground short can be caused by a failed LM339 on the 10 switch opto board - refer to https://pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php/Williams_WPC#WPC_10_Opto_Board_Problems

If you disconnect J3 on the sw10 opto board (A-18159) and the ground short disappears then it'll confirm the LM339 is the issue.

I also see that you have a Indy 500 that also uses a A-18159, so if you wanted to double check (after doing the above test) you could take the sw10 opto board from the Indy 500 and drop it into The Shadow. This will also allow you to verify that there are no other issues on the machine, before you send the board off for repair (unless of course you a skilled in board work)

#10142 10 months ago

Thank guys for the guidance, let me go at it a little to see if I can find the short...I like the idea with swapping boards from the other game.

If you can offer anyother thoughts, please feel free as it's been over 2 years turning on and seeing how nice the new LEDs look but NO play.. Ugh!

Have them replated. I did the ones on my WCS and it looks SO amazing I know Shadow will get its turn someday. I know it’s kinda expensive and annoying but it’s the right thing to do.

Have you tested disconnecting J3 on the sw10 opto board (A-18159) to see the ground short disappears? The additional switch errrors (sw 31-33) are all on the sw10 opto board - the magnet opto is sw33. So this all points to the sw10 opto board and most likely the LM339 having failed.

The Battle Kicker opto and Mini PF bad error messages relate to sw36 which is not on the sw10 opto board, however I'd focus on troubleshooting the sw10 opto board first - remember that you can take the opto board from Indy 500 to confirm your fault finding

Note that the only thing relates to both the sw10 opto board switches and the sw24 opto board that handles the Battle Kicker opto (sw36) is the 12v power from J116-2. However you wouldn't see the ground short error if the opto boards weren't getting power.
