We're back!

After a disaster in our datacenter took down our server, we are now running Pinside on a brand new server. However, things may not work as expected as we are still polishing the playfield and adjusting some switches! We might be switching to maintenance mode a few times. Please see this forum topic for more info.

Quoted from allsportdvd:

You’re going to get both answers every time you ask whether LCD or LED is better. I own 1 LED and 11 LCD inc in the Shadow so I obviously like LCD better, you can have dots or hires. It’s always a personal choice

Same, I own 4 LCD, I LED and one COLOR2DMD. With LCD you have a choice to get the same dot effect anyway as LED.

#7302 9 months ago
Quoted from EStroh:

I took the LED one out of mine and installed the LCD version instead. I like it much better, but that's just my preference.
The LED version was brighter, so if that's important to you then you might like the LED.

I did the same, the LED hurt my eyes and made me dizzy even when turned down but that was my experience only. I think the colors of the LCD match the Aurich Translite better

#7303 9 months ago

I have both LCD and LED also in my collection. I like the options the LCD gives you but hate the form factor. The height of the LCD can be seen from the player's perspective as a shadow in some instances. The LED is the footprint of the OEM display and looks much cleaner installed. The other benifit of the LED is lower power draw. My Shadow has Comet LEDs installed which are pretty bright. I feel the brightness and overall display color of the LED Color DMD is a better fit for my game (and a little cheaper).

I admit, the fit of the LED is great, I wish the LCD came in that size but the LCD works as intended even though it's bulky. I also agree about the power draw but the LCD is low too, nothing like the old DMD.

The other issue I had with the LED was the white light line reflection on the display, I tried electrical tape which helped but maybe I just did something wrong.

In my opinion, whichever one you choose is massive improvement in looks and power consumption over the DMD, the LED vs the LCD comes down to personal preference because both are great!

#7305 9 months ago

To be clear, I really don’t like any of the enhancements to the DMD dots, so prefer original. I’d this was something you wanted, LCD would be the choice. Otherwise LED.

LCD in Shadow, can’t go wrong

I have all original DMD's on my machines as I like the classic look but that said I think the colour DMD looks fantastic, particularly on The Shadow as the colours really enhances the image and ties in well with the cabinet artwork (love the green).

I just got my Aurich package too, and it came with custom rule cards. If anyone wants my old ones, let me know and I week send them to you.

Dang! Ill take them! I still have the original nasty ones on there.

Hi, just joined the club, looking for the main cabinet decals as I have the backbox ones. PM if so, thanks.

Edit: I would take even just a front main cab decal, thx

I had looked into those and after speaking to a few people, decided not to buy them. They are not licensed, if that matters to you.

Looks like the Shadow is being revived, with a book series and possibility of a movie. So will there be a Stern Shadow I’m 2026? The Shadow as a character is coming up for public domain soon, so I wonder if this has anything to do with that?

The Shadow returns! Very happy to be back in the club after selling to a friend last year. One advantage of selling to someone you know!

I forgot. Who did the backboard city scape decal? I love the art but the decal is letting go in the high humidity beach air. I now think like others that it should be a plastic. I was wondering if anybody has the resources to make this happen (with the creator's permission of course).

Was the decal from jonesjb ??

Yes, I had created these and generally the adhesive should stay (I recommend cleaning the surface with isopropyl alcohol to stay - but humidity may possibly affect).

I’ve been considering a reprint. Mad_Dog_Coin_Op I had a quick look at my archive and it doesn’t look like I sold one to you... Is it possible you bought the decal from another person?

I would be in on that. Of course, if you are looking for another decal, I have a spare.

Hello, I bought it from you last year on eBay I believe. Turning this into a plastic would take it to the next level. I’m sure people would embrace the extra charge required to do so.

Thanks for the offer but I also have a spare. I was more curious if we can make the transition to plastic which would be way cool.

Ah, that could be - I'll reach out on PM about sending a replacement.

Regarding a plastic - I'm currently awaiting my Rick and Morty (due next month), my next pinball project is to create some original hand drawn, color matched art for the R&M apron. If I like how it looks, I'll explore having it manufactured, and will explore options for a shadow plastic. Can't guarantee anything, not sure on timings though, as I have my day job and I'm currently creating a number of oil paintings for a gallery show later in the year (or whenever Covid-19 ends). The stuff I create for pinball is more of a personal side passion project.

I’d love a decal for mine whether it be plastic or not. It’s so bare back there.

I have an extra plastic that came with mine before I switched to the cityscape decal. It looks like brick, it’s made of thin plastic. See pics below of it. If someone wants it I’ll send it if you pay the shipping. It’s probably a custom homemade thing so I can’t attest to the quality. But it was installed on my Shadow when I got it last year and looked good. I have a couple pics from then and you can see it.

It's brick pattern used for model train setups and the like. I have something similar on mine.

That’s what I figured. You can prob make one like it if that faux brick plastic stuff is available.

Here is a very minor “mod” that looks quite nice on this machine. These are the clear coin inserts sold by pinball life with some comet purple passion bulbs behind.

I wanted to order the one attached from Retro Refurbs, but they won't ship from the UK to Canada because, you know.. we're baddies and other nations fear us! Lol

Tks, maybe one day we can order from them again. Until then, Canadians are barred! Thou I hear they give US Pinside members a rebate of some sort.. go figure those UK guys! I thought Canada and the UK were part of the Commonwealth, hahaha! No brotherly love there!

Wow, those are different items altogether!! Nice!!

Now that you mention it, I never thought about linenbacking as an option for an original TRON poster I recently looked at. I didn't care for the folds, but if I have this done it would help make those lines disappear a bit.
