That guy in Texas who is trying to sell the rusty Rocky and Bullwinkle listed this auction, appears to be from a NOS playfield. Don't think it was the rocky he was selling.

I grabbed this lot because the coils themselves would have cost more individually from marco than the purchase price. Plus I get the random brackets and parts needed for my game. Will need to tumble these, but will be fun to work with.

Oh, cool that they used one-piece pop assemblies like Bally used to. Always preferred those to the two part top/bottom ones that are common

If you love the game this restoration makes perfect sense. I've spent £1000's buying NOS parts for SEGA Goldeneye restore, when it's for the love of a game and nothing else the cost isn't a consideration.

Good luck with the restore I'll be following this thread and looking forward to each step of your progress

Got the box of slightly rusty NOS pinball pulls from the guy in texas. Really happy to have found these.

So far here is all the major assemblies I have. Total cost on all these parts was $70. (not including wabac ramp)

I need to tumble the parts more, but already they look a lot better. The rust is gone, but so is the (zinc?) coating.

Maybe give them a shot of clear after tumbling to prevent any rust or corrosion from reappearing.

Pinball Saturday means I made a trip out to the local pinball parts guy. Asked about the ramp set, $20. I originally came for the dmd speaker panel and grabbed that for $20. Will need to find a rocky and bullwinkle speaker grills, but really happy to find something for my backglass to sit in.

I grabbed the ramps also because I needed some of the hardware to mount to my new WABAC ramp.

Why are so many European pins trashed like this? I've seen so many messed up like this. WAY more than the US, anecdotally.

#65 2 years ago

New parts look good.

My machine has been acting up... guessing it's a board issue.

"It's showtime!" keeps repeating... constantly... even through the diagnostic tests.
No switches seem to be causing the issue--at least when I did the switch diagnostics. Guessing some type of board issue. No battery damage--the batteries aren't on the board. Will dive into it more this weekend.

Good luck on this restore--love this game.

Seller neglected to mention the yellow ramp didn't have the piece(s) needed to attach the damn thing to the playfield. Was only $8, but damn.

Got the new arm plastic in, the repro is quite a bit different in color, a lot thinner as well. I can't complain too much because its loads better than what I started with.

Did a trial run with the paint to see how I liked it. I will be removing the paint, might try something thats a little more black. This has the right texture, but the gloss is pretty strong.

The vacuum metallizing on the Data East logo will be the tough part. You can approximate it with silver metal paint, but it won't look like actual vacuum metallizing.

Quoted from lordloss:

I have high hopes for this project, good thing everyone hates data east. It makes the parts more readily available.
I wish CPR would do a run of the rocky playfields, that would make life easier for me.

They have a list of possible upcoming playfields, and this is one.

Lordloss, There is a company, I don't have the info in front of me, that sells what they say is the correct blue paint for this. I will find the info and post it to you.

#77 2 years ago

I read the title of your thread and was thinking to myself "That's like every game I have ever owned." LOL! It's looking good so far.

#79 2 years ago

Didn't like the wall the previous owners put in, so I took it out. Now my storage room will be the pinball area where I can more easily pull projects out.

Started sanding the glued in side rail tape off and figured out if I did some 220 grit sand paper I could take off the blue paint they used to repaint the cabinet.

Added a small addition to the family. All I need is a gun n roses and I have all the DE DMD machines I want.

Fun fact: If I move that wall over 6 inches, I can fit a 5th machine along that wall.

Lordloss: Did you finish the restoration? Curious because I have a R&B that is in pretty good shape but just now replacing the red fire button with a Boris button and new housing. But there are some pretty off color blue cabinet background touch ups so wondering if you might have a paint formula for the correct blue.

#84 2 years ago

You can get the right colored blue paint from here: http://www.pinballuniverse.com/PinballPaints.htm

Working on three projects right now, but they are very similar so i'm doing to the work in stages. Putting in a new bottom into a Tommy, then hopefully rocky and bullwinkle.

Plan is to get the bottoms in, hook up the transformer, wiring, coin door, and a set of boards and test the power circuit/dmd

#87 2 years ago

Thanks for the update. Don't have time to tackle paint on mine now. But did finally find the elusive Boris button and housing and got it installed a couple of days ago. Works, but doesn't light. One more thing to track down. In the process repainting the lock down bar which was pretty beat up.
