Never ceases to amaze me how critical people get when someone tries to create something for others to enjoy.

    Quoted from Hollywoodbone:

I’d like some clarification and you to elaborate on what makes the other awards not have to worry about being worthy simply because they are voted on by the public, people’s family’s, work college's, friends, as Kaneda says your mail man? Or are you saying they don’t have to worry about it because they are not worthy because they are voted on by the public?

    Greg, a people's vote is what you make it, i.e. "self worthiness";

The first twipy awards, I was driving home from work late listening to you guys, and you gave me a mention as part of the streamers award and I was over the moon just to get a mention and that some of the folks who watched my stream took the time to nominate me; but if I'd won it I'd simply have refused to accept it because there were many more people worthy and Jack rightly won it and I was very happy for him knowing how much effort he puts in, I could easily have got thousands of people I know to vote for me and win it, but could I look myself in the mirror? hell no.

Let your pinball base vote and look yourself in the mirror that the people who know what you did voted for you, if you won then you won on what you do in pinball.

Get your family, work buddies, movie club or mail man to vote for you, look in the mirror knowing that it was nothing to do with your pinball work but your ability to be friendly. Everyone will be shocked and you've won notoriety rather than recognition. No thanks. Worse than that you are getting feedback for what you do? no. Feedback is a gift and in my view a gift to treasure.

In my industry I've turned down many awards because I believed the process/org/people involved in handing them out didn't do enough of a good job to make them worthy (they no longer ask thankfully). I've asked a bunch of people vote for me in "peoples awards" more to avoid being last lol and in a previous life I was forced to take an award and I wrote a speech on acceptance that dismantled how piss poor the process was that allowed me to win the award. (the PR people didn't speak to me for a week). However, the organisation listened to what I said and completely re-did how they do awards and I was pleased to accept the award later on and discuss how it made me feel given the effort they put in to nomination, qualification and selection; now it's one of the most honoured awards to win in my industry.

Last week and earlier in the year people in my team were given Queen's honours for their work during covid, two years ago my team won an Emmy award, for the past eight years we've won the best in the country award; all of those have a process and methodology that make one proud. Thats what awards need to do - make you feel proud that the people you work or the community you serve judged you and found you to be what they themselves aim to be.

If I had been in an industry for my whole career/life any recognition has to come from those qualified to give it. No disrespect but the panel that was advertised on the website simply doesn't make the mark in my view, as someone who participates in this hobby, frankly, to me it was insulting.

The people making games, mods, accessories, the people who run tournaments, events and create content, i.e. the people who make our fantastic hobby what it is, and why we love it so much, deserve the best recognition we can give them; because this is something we choose to do because we all love it and ALL of the people in the pinball industry are talented enough that they could most likely all work in other industries and probably earn a hell of a lot more.

I've since spoken to Dennis who has said alot more folks are involved, my hope is that in any awards process, all stops are pulled to ensure that those who make this hobby/industry what it is are recognised for that and that they themselves are elevated to new levels creativity because of the recognition shared with them.

I've spoken to Jeff about the TWIP awards and I know thats what he aims for also.

The best part about awards is not receiving them; it's being the one that gives them.

    Regards,
    Neil.

As someone involved in this I can say I very much appreciate this detailed response. This is year one of the PIAs and I know everyone involved has nothing but good intentions. This already is and will continue to be a learning/growing process. We’ve got to start somewhere and I hope this grows into something the hobby loves.

Well said. When I saw this, my usual urge to be sarcastic about the new awards (or pretty much anything) took a pause. It's hard to go wrong just not being a dick.

Perhaps this is a test and if you make this selection your ballot is shredded, but I noticed that Thunderbirds is listed as American Pinball instead of Homepin.

I want to like the Super Awesome Pinball Show, as their energy and production are through the roof. But when literally the first thing I hear is GD, F bomb this or that, it's a real turn off. As in after enough of it, I just turn it off.

Agreed. It's just not entertaining. So long too

    #121 3 years ago

Uncle Pinball rarely drops and f-Bomb...

    #122 3 years ago

    Puppet palz?

    Never heard of ‘em.

    A show with just 4 episodes ?

Can’t wait to see the meeting minutes on this one

    #123 3 years ago

How can you not have heard of Puppet Palz?

I would guess their 4 episodes took as much time to construct, compose, perform and edit as 20 or more episodes of most other podcasts.

    #124 3 years ago

More pinball entertainment in our crazy little hobby??
Yes please, thanks to all, wasting thier time on this.
    Were all nuts!
As Nate Shivers said, we all brought the roller coaster home.
I've got 18 pins! Idiot! And I'm baby sitting a High speed, and a Haunted House.
    So 20?
    Were all crazy.
Thanks for all the podcasts and other nonsense.

My criticism of the PIA awards and a consideration for next year, is to increase the pool of those voting. Criticism of the major awards shows in the past have revolved over the pool of electors not being representative. In response, the better shows expanded their voters and public ire was tamped down.

For instance in 2014, the Academy awards was composed of 99% white males at the average age of 65. This year it is expected to be 50% women and 30% minorities. So they have worked hard each year to increase representation and today they have overcome perceived biases. I don’t think PIA has the same kind of biases, but it does have a perception problem to conquer.

With a base of 40 judges, the pool of judges is too damn small. Figure out a way to expand it to 100 and you will have made excellent progress. This is commonly achieved by creating subgroups of judges within the pool and extending invitations to vote. The funny thing is nobody questions the qualifications of the judges for the major awards shows, but what qualification do these people really need? If they have a pulse and belong to a subgroup, they are invited to vote. Same should apply to PIA awards by inviting pinball media to fill 50% of voters and use other subgroups to comprise the balance that are non TPN members. There is plenty of room for improvement after reaching this milestone too, but diversity prevents any possibility of collusion.

Otherwise, I am following this years show with enthusiasm. I applaud the organizers of this year’s event and think they have created something that is entertaining, significant and worthwhile.

Yeah the more the merrier agreed. I assume word will get out after this year and more people will express interest in being a part of the panel. I’m not saying the stipulations to be on the panel are perfect, but at least minimal vetting needs to be done.

It’s tough to include more voters when some eligible media didn’t sign up to vote. We agree and that’s why we had the criteria well defined and opened to tons of media to participate. We can only control what we can control. It’s up to media to share value in it as well and sign up. So I think we did our job expanding the voting.

Quality comments there! We'd love more judges and hopefully after this year more hobbyist media will express interest. The pandemic I'm sure didn't help.

Also, you must be listening in to our discussions...

Guys, I always thought, if you were in a more mainstream hobby you would be YouTube millionaires. Everything you make is so high quality.

I subscribe to a few car YouTube channels and in four years they have gone from simple car to buying super and even hyper cars.

Outsiders were never going to win this award show . It was a sham . The Twipys will be more representative of The Pinball Industry . Jack Danger should have won Streamer and Kaneda as best podcast . Then the “producers” include a bad clip of Kaneda which made this show seem even more slanted towards a select group and not towards the most talented and worthy .
A waste of time fellas. Don’t quit your day jobs .
