I'm having issues with my upper flipper and was wondering if it could be a hardware or software issue. I'm running 0.90 on my LE and notice that the upper flipper only works about half of the time. Would there be software code that prevents the upper flipper from functioning at times? Or would this be a hardware issue? I checked the wire connections and they look good, and it does work periodically. Does anyone else have this issue? Any ideas of what to look at?

Quoted from beelzeboob:

Your right flipper switch likely isn't gapped correctly. You probably need to narrow the gap on the inside switch on the right side.

Does the right flipper switch have two sets of contacts, one for the lower flipper and one for the upper flipper? Or is there just one set for both flippers?

The lower flipper works fine, it's just the upper.

I'll look at the contacts and see what I can adjust.

Thanks!

Quoted from usafstars:

True statement, my bad...rushed the reading. I always jump to the flipper and not the flipper button contacts. Thanks for the correction...Cheers

Thanks to all for the inputs. It was indeed the flipper button contacts which were the issue. The inside-most leaf of the right button contact stack was not making good contact when the button was pressed. I bent the leaf slightly inward so that you can now see it bend slightly when the flipper button is pushed. Everything is back in working order!

After updating to 0.97, I've seen some interesting behavior and wanted to ask if this is expected.

The new code now has the SIDE SCOOP LOCKS BALLS set to always, which is a change from previous versions. However, I've noticed that when I have a ball locked in the side scoop and drain the current ball, the machine won't end the turn. Instead, it will enter ball search, eject the ball from the side scoop and allow me to continue playing. This greatly extends the turn, but perhaps this is expected?

Also, there have been several cases when it seems that the ball locked in the side scoop will be ejected while playing another ball, starting a pseudo multi-ball, but not the Far Cry multiball. I can then lock the ball back into the side scoop, or just finish playing the two balls.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Quoted from Schwaggs:

That’s what happened on mine before the upper scoop switch fix. Make sure you have the scoop switch fix installed and adjusted properly

Ok. I had previously insalled the replacement switch, but it never detected the ball in the scoop, so I put the original back in.

How did you adjust the new switch to make sure it functions correctly? Is there an alignment point? Just make sure that the switch is far enough into the subway?

I'm having an issue with my right lower flipper occasionally mechanically sticking in the up position. I've verified that it is mechanically stuck by turning off power when it is stuck, and noting that it doesn't lower.

When I lifted the playfield to inspect the flipper mechanism, I noticed a lot of metal flakes under the right flipper, and there wasn't anything similar under the left flipper.

My guess is that the flipper post/bearing is wearing and causing issues. Has anyone else had this issue?

I've seen aftermarket replacement flippers on Pinside. Are there any recommendations? How difficult is it to replace the flippers & bearings?

Thanks.

Quoted from parsonsaj:

The metal flakes are a classic symptom of a degraded or broken coil stop which can cause the flipper plunger to bind within the sleeve and other fun stuff. For any new Stern game it should be common practice to proactively replace the coil stops with the ones from Pinball Life which hold up much better. It's very easy to replace them, too.

Thanks. I'll take a look at the coil stop.

In any case, I've ordered replacements just to be safe.

EDIT: I inspected the coil stop and it is essentially destroyed as you suspected. There appears to be a brass bushing which was totally worn/broken, which is where the metal flakes were coming from. I'm really disappointed with the parts quality, as I have had issues with LED bulbs falling apart, the entire scoop issue, and now a broken coil stop.

I just watched the 14 billion point game by Ray (Theguyoverthere ) and have a question about using the right flippers in combination. I noticed that you were able to hold balls on the lower right flipper while using the full motion of the upper right flipper. Is there a trick to doing this? Do you just half-press the right flipper button, or is there some other technique to accomplish this?

Quoted from P1nhead:

MRS work perfectly - in fact, a couple of pins I replaced all switches with MRS.
MM creations (I think that's the name of the company on here) are great.

I installed an MRS switch in my inner loop, but I am now encountering a new issue. If the ball is going slow enough over the MRS, the switch will 'capture' the ball, requiring mechanical agitation (and an ensuing warning/tilt) to release the ball. I'm going to try installing a shim to increase the clearance between the switch and ball, but I'm worried that it will affect the switch sensitivity.
