Quoted from CrashJT:

Fwiw, I just installed the two Stern kits per Stern directions. It wasn't hard at all.

Hi CrashJT,

Are you concerned or have run into ball damage from the exposed area on that replacement scoop guard (P/N 511-3057-00)? Especially on side hits coming off the top flipper. I expressed to Stern possibly an edge protector or something. Tech said they would review and get back but that was a couple weeks ago.

I was concerned as soon as I saw the "fix" that Stern came up with.

Any of you hosers make it to Allentown this weekend?

I installed the latest Stern scoop kit on my LE. It appears that they upgraded the rubber from blue to black, maybe after seeing photos of rubber damage on other machines. Also, the main scoop protector is noticeably sturdier but the side scoop protector is exactly the same as the one that I removed. While the main scoop now seems protected, I'm not convinced about the side scoop. I was super careful so it took me about 2 hours to install everything, including the upgraded trough switch, and I really do not want to do this again anytime soon!
Note: I also lowered the upper flipper strength down to 155, which still easily hits all of the shots but will hopefully do less damage to the protector.

I'll put my update kit on the shelf when it arrives, ninja working perfect and cliffy has theirs ready now too. My scoop has worked perfect, so I'm not gonna mess with it

This is a perfect example as to why I don't like Stern pinball machines.....They go the cheapest route on everything.

Look at these cheap @ss $3.00 speakers that they have mounted in the backbox.

My plan is to replace them, (along with the lower cabinet subwoofer) with MUCH better speakers. (I'm adding an external amp as well).

Yes, I bought the Pinwoofer kit.

You'll be blown away with how good pinwoofers sound in Rush, might be the best sounding game I've owned, and I've put them in at least 8 games now.

I bought these from Tilt for my premium and decided to go a different route. They are brand new in the unopened package. I paid $75 plus tax and shipping. I'll sell them for $65 shipped in the US. PM me if interested.

Brought my pitch down from 7.2 to a very nice 6.9. I can hit the right ramp and left orbit much more cleanly now, and I'm getting fewer rejects from the spinner gate. More importantly, I'm getting far fewer crappy slingshot-to-outlane drain screamers, so I had a hell of a lot more fun playing tonight. I'm still struggling on getting much more than 150-200k consistently, but it felt less like work and more like progress. If I can manage to start finishing some modes and maybe keep the ball in play during multiballs maybe I'll get somewhere.

#5918 1 year ago

Received my premium today. Big thanks to Rob @ madpinball. Fantastic distributor! Everything worked well out of the box except the menu/volume buttons kept freezing up. I had to remove the SD and Micro SD card a few times to reset it and then the buttons would work again.

Question? Did you guys save a bunch on the purchase to justify the costs in fuel and time?

#5921 1 year ago
Quoted from Av8:

Wax is fine. Its a good idea.
I bought and sold over 40 pins and many NIB sterns. I joined pinside when it first started. Stern playfields are the softest. Especially when new. I saw an Stern Elvira first run that looked beat to death after a few months. Like a golf ball. Why? Its the wood they use and the short cure/dry times. Some games are better than others.

Wanted to check in with you.. My premium arrived today and i have the playfield protector ready to install. Do you still recommend placing it over the top of the scoop protector? Any other recommendations?

Purchase price is list price. No sales tax in Oregon. But service is great. They open the box and set it up (while you are there if you want or before you get there). They go through the machine and make sure things are working as expected so there no surprises when you get it home. They installed the mirror blades on my GnR that I bought from them for no extra charge which was awesome because those suckers were a tight fit. Then they wrap it up and load it in your vehicle. I happen to have a few good friends in the area so I work a visit in with them which is nice. Plus, you get to go to the best pinball location in the world! The place is AMAZING and worth a trip on its own. I will drive down here just to spend a day there.

PSA for those who get a replacement node 10 board: the address is not set from the factory. Make sure your DIP switches look like the pic below, or you’ll get all kinds of strange behavior. Fortunately I figured it out in about 5 minutes. Correct setting is OFF-ON-OFF-OFF (left to right). Nice to have a working clock again!

I just installed a shaker motor in my premium.

It's a game changer....nicely implemented into the gameplay and not "over-done".

The top flipper can't make a shot to the bottom scoop - at the very tip of the flipper, it hits the top scoop. So I don't think this is much of a problem at all.

#5926 1 year ago

So yeah saving 10% on sales tax is substantial. Might do this for my next NIB as an excuse to visit.

Which shaker motor did you install? I have seen a Rev C version (pbl-100-0020-00) and a Factory Authorized kit for Spike / Spike 2 (502-5027-01)... wondering which one is best to buy...

I used the Pinball Life model since the Stern one was out of stock. Mine works awesome and is well integrated as well.

I can agree with you on that right side. The left side is seeing some play from off the bottom bumper, though.

I think the pinball life shaker motor is better. It seems a little less aggressive than the stern. Plus the stern shaker motors always come with the wrong size screws

What was the reason for having to replace the node board ?

Quoted from ian866:

Guessing that it was one of the early builds that didn't have a ferrite bead on the power line to the stepper motor and it burned up the board. There's a service bulletin for installing the part (502-8017-00) on it, but it didn't affect a huge number of machines because stern caught it pretty fast. Documented here: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/the-official-rush-owners-club-1/page/94#post-6869212

Or it could have just been a defective node 10.

My friend’s LE’s node board crapped out completely, and we had a league night so I loaned him mine. That took out the clock side of my board (ramp was okay). So I just had Stern send me 2 boards. I’ll check for the ferrite core on his game, and we’ll compare his voltages to mine.

Thanks for the link @pinmonk.

For those wondering what the playfield protector covers here it is before I removed the protective film. I am pretty happy with it other than the little left-hand piece which goes up behind the knock down targets. I cut that off of mine as it felt like it just wasn’t supported well And would break off eventually

I’m very happy with my playfield protector, I just wish I didn’t need it. I’ve never needed one on any of my other Sterns.

I took off the Stern v3 scoop guard because it seems unnecessary with the protector.

How are you guys cleaning your playfield protectors?

#5949 1 year ago

Ya know, evvvvery once in a while I'd get a ball that would stop on the top side of the lower left pop bumper, that didnt trigger it. I'd just shake it loose, no big deal, figure I'd get in there at some point and adjust the skirt switch.

Today I was in there messing with installing posts and this caught my eye... (this is a weird camera angle up in the bumpers looking down & outside.) But now I see why it wasnt tripping the bumper skirt up in that area....

Guess I'll dive underneath tomorrow and see if the nut fell off coil mounting bracket.
