The Yakuza games are all great. However all of the games before Like a Dragon use a modified version of the Virtua Fighter engine for the in game battles. It starts off easy enough but you do need to become proficient with the fighting styles and counters to succeed in the game. For Like a Dragon, the main character loves Dragon Warrior so the game uses that style of turn based battles and a really fun take on Job classes found in other RPG's.
I don't get the comparison to GTA at all, other than you are in a city. The games are completely different. There is also a spin off series called Judgment where you play a detective in the same universe. A new one is coming out soon.
