Quoted from rotordave:

What did you find so bad about the Mummy?

That I was not drunk enough to deal with Tom Cruise's acting. Maybe I should try today. HAPPY 4TH!

Quoted from zr11990:

Baby Driver is a pretty good movie. Kindof Thelma and Louise type movie.

Thelma and Louise..? That was a men bashing film. Baby Driver is cool action movie with a lot of different music. With all the music, it reminds me of The Galaxy of the Guardians.

I was referring to people being on the run with nowhere to go and no way out. Yes they did break the law but they weren't really hardened criminals, there were extenuating circumstances. There were no bombs going off, no GCI, no outrageous shit that could never happen. Just a good movie.

Ok, so, War For the Planet of the Apes was pretty damn good. Well written, nicely acted and the CGI was incredible! Tight ape close ups were right on. It didn't seem so long ago I was talking with my friend at ILM about the problem of realistic hair. (Mighty Joe Young 1998) How far we've come!

#705 6 years ago

I was suprised how good the last planet of the apes movie was.

#706 6 years ago

I enjoyed seeing the setup and the references to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes.

#707 6 years ago

Just saw Spider Man Homecoming. Tom Holland blew me away as Peter Parker/Spider Man. He's just as good as Tobey McGuire. Micheal Keaton was AMAZING as the Vulture, best MCU villain to date IMO. I'd give it an 8/10. A solid comic book movie that doesn't suck, and is my third favorite Spider Man movie behind the first two with Tobey McGuire.

Dave, any verdict on Children of Men yet?

Watched it in the weekend. Thanks for the tip.

Bleak tale set in 2027 UK, where women can no longer get pregnant, the government is in control, and the human race is on a path to extinction. Clive Owens is tasked with getting a miraculously pregnant teenager to the border and safety.

Very reminiscent of the Netflix series Black Mirror, if you've seen that. If not, watch it.

I'd go 8 Popcorns.

The House

Cheap movie of the week!

Will Ferrell movie ... so you know what you're gonna get. He plays the same character in almost every movie. Haha!

Here he teams up with Amy Poehler, playing "soccer moms" who can't afford to send their girl to college. So their bearded buddy comes up with a scheme to open a neighbourhood casino in his house, and chaos ensues.

Of course, the plot is D grade, and you know what's coming next ... but it was certainly funny in parts. I'm not a Ferrell fan by any stretch, this was probably one of his better movies that I have seen. Whether that is saying much is over to you.

Hand in your brain at the door, and have a laugh.

I'd go 6 Popcorns. Hmmm nah 5 Popcorns. Let's settle on 5.5.

Wait till it hits Netflix and watch it for free.

Anybody see "Baby Driver" yet?

Awesome movie. Great back story, great characters, incredible soundtrack (that is very well tied into the action). If anyone goes to see it, pay very close attention after the first car chase when he's getting coffee.

The first 6 minutes of the movie is on youtube if you need convincing. It won't ruin the movie either, in fact you'll probably want to watch that once before seeing it in the theater (it's worth watching multiple times). I won't post a link, but it's not hard to find.

#bellbottoms!

#711 6 years ago

I realize I am a few months late to the party, but I finally saw "Get Out" last night.

It is the best movie I have seen all year. It felt like a classic "Twilight Zone" episode, but stretched out to movie length.

I plan to watch it a few more times to catch all the little things I missed in my first viewing.

10 popcorns.

I've seen Children Of Men pop up on a couple of "Greatest Sci-Fi movies of all time" lists, and I just don't see the big deal.

I've watched it a couple of times, and it's not a bad flick (I'd say 6.5/10), but it's not the end all be all of Sci-Fi for me. I'd say personal Top 100 mayyyyybe, but not even Top 50. Can you guys help me understand the love on this one?

Thanks,
EV

#717 6 years ago

I thought children of men was stunning when I saw it several years ago. It just struck me correctly.

Apparently not just me it was nominated for 75 awards and won more than 40. Including oscars.

Then the director made gravity which I like but not as much. Im not sure what's next but I will watch.

I felt like children of men was hard to watch. At times. Not a happy place to be that future...

#718 6 years ago
Quoted from EchoVictor:

That's why I developed the popcorn scale.

Just rate the movie on how YOU enjoyed it. Nice and simple.

Everyone is different ... like our Mummy discussion last week. I thought it was enjoyable enough, yet it's like 15% on RT. Honestly I think that's because everyone just gets on board the hate train, just like the Ghostbusters female reboot (which wasn't great, but wasn't unwatchable ..)

Same thing happens in reverse ... people see a 90% review and think they have to love the movie. People are scared to have a different opinion.

With Children of Men, I think it was a good watch, and it told a tale that maybe was a little close to becoming reality one day. You can see it happening. But 92% good like on RT? Best sci fi ever made? Maybe not.

Only if you thought Avatar was awful (I didn't).

Just watched wonder women. 8 popcorns! I have been off the super hero bandwagon for a while but this movie delivered! Great action, good story, plus wonder woman is HOT!

#721 6 years ago

Also just got back from Disney. Avatar land is SWEET at night. I thought the movie was a remake of pockahountis,
but the 3D was off the hook. Actually looking forward to the new movies after Disney.

Children of Men doesn't even register as sci-fi to me. I think of it as a dystopian drama if anything, as there are very few sci-fi elements. This article explains its greatness better than I can:

Jay,

really interesting article. Didn't really think it through the political angle. That explains a lot.

Ten year old spoiler alert - I like that.

#725 6 years ago

Valerian 3 d is on the radar.

#726 6 years ago

I'll go over some of my recent watches..

- The Great Alone (Netflix) :: 7/10 popcorns

This was a documentary about the Iditarod, and more specifically, one family that runs it. I find the race really interesting in itself and the characters are interesting enough to bring you in. It bounces around a little, but I liked the story and the scenes from the race.

- Arrival :: 9/10 popcorns

I had pretty high expectations for this, and I really wasn't disappointed. The acting was solid, and the story is thought provoking. This is one of my favorites of the year thus far.

- Passengers :: 5/10 popcorns

I felt like I knew what to expect with this one, mostly because they told you in the advertising. It was a fairly entertaining movie without much depth (other than the weight of a single choice).

- Rogue One :: 8/10 popcorns

My 5th favorite Star Wars movie.

#727 6 years ago

Oh, I forgot. Valerian! Yikes! I didn't know anything about the book or comic....didn't know it was written for 12 year olds. Great special effects, terrible script! Dialogue even I would be embarrassed admitting to!

#728 6 years ago

Saw Kong skull island yesterday good movie some scenes where a little stupid by being too far fetched but I will give 3 and a half stars out of 5

We rate in popcorns around here not stars. from 1-10.

#730 6 years ago
Quoted from Tux:

I saw it yesterday. It was a fantastic movie made from a seemingly-boring premise, as with all Edgar Wright movies.

I really enjoyed this movie too for what it was. In addition to the driving, favorite part was when he had the gangsters hold off for a couple of seconds so that he could resync his tune to the action that was about to go down. Who doesn't appreciate a little humor in their gangster/music/love themed movies?

The real question is, would George Lucas be embarrassed to admit writing it? (Looking at SW EP I-II-III, in particular.)

#732 6 years ago

Ok so last night. I had to watch the notebook instead of the new game of thrones. With my girlfriend.

I had never seen the notebook. I wanted to see the game of thrones.

(I'm going to watch that now, this morning.)

Note book was an epic love story eclipsed only by my own love stories.

right now, as we speak. My epic love story is unfolding.

As for the notebook, it was good. I kept thinking about how I will film what I write In my love story. Later.

I just thought I would share. I got to watch notebook instead of game of thrones. I made the best of it.

Saturday night was double feature night as I was playing pinball in the garage. Two great movies I had never seen before.

The Big Empty- I don't know how I missed seeing this classic all these years, but will be worth watching again.

The Lone Ranger- Action packed rendition of the classic TV show I grew up with, and Johnny Depp as Tonto may be my favorite roll he has ever played. Classic!

I din't get much pinball in while either of these was on.

#735 6 years ago

At our house we watched two movies on Saturday - we watched Hidden Figures, and we all loved it. Daughter's planning on being an engineer when she goes into college, so the science side was interesting to her.

Then my wife and I decided to show our daughter a classic film - Highlander. Wow. Our memories of that film were sooooo much better than it actually was. It was so painful to watch, we turned it off 40 minutes in. Even with us all doing our own version of MST3K, it was still unwatchable. Makes me shudder to even think of seeing 2&3 which, in my memory were even worse than the original...

For those of you that didn't get to see Shin Godzilla when it was in the theatres last fall it comes out on Blu Ray / DVD on 8/1 (Funimation)

IMG_1020 (resized).JPGIMG_1020 (resized).JPG
On a related note, Funimation had this banner up at their booth at San Diego Comic con, and neglected to put the release date on it.
There were a lot of people asking if they could buy it there.

Spider-Man Part 53 (aka the new one lol)

The $9 movie of the week!! Boooya!

Thought it was pretty good! The movie had a lot of deadpan humour similar to Ironman 1, which I enjoy.

The bad guy had some dimension, a working guy trying to stick it to the man and make some coin for his family ... rather than the usual megalomaniac douchebag who wants to destroy the planet for no particular reason. Wouldn't it be better to keep the world rather than blowing it up? I can never figure that out ...

The movie starts with a funny moment ... the city is repairing all the damage from the last Avengers showdown. As a property guy, when I was watching that movie I said to the Mrs "who the hell is paying for all this damage??" Haha!

Enjoyable superhero watch.

8 Popcorns.

I agree. Saw this one Sunday and found Michael Keaton to be a very good, atypical villain and the movie overall better than expected. I was worried that the new actor's "teenagerness" from Civil War would be too annoying at feature length, but it ended up being a good balance.

Directed by an Aussie whose previous directing experiences were almostly exclusively constrained to music videos by Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. It shows in the movie's over the top choreography and use of fog machines, that's for sure.

Whether that is a positive or a negative is up for debate.

Gif made me think of gojira the band which is playing somewhere small nearby in early August. Gojira would be cool.

Has any body else seen The Fast and the Furious?

I'm watching it right now for the first time.
